Sorry to all those who don’t like “pets and babies” photos… ;) This is my kitty trying to catch a fly on the window last night… The sun was coming down into our living room which gave that nice glow on one side of his face. I was originally going to make it all black & white but I just couldn’t bring myself to leave his gorgeous blue eye out! Update 17/09/2008: / Thanks to all your comments this photo is now on page #2 of the “most popular pictures of all times”. Please leave a comment if you drop by to help me make it to page#1 !! / Thank you all again for your support! :))

When he’s cute, he’s very cute. When he’s scampish, he’s very scampish. The joys of owning Bengals.

Scratch, our Siamese, photographed with what would on a normal day be his dinner. Birds were shot at a local pet store and added in Photoshop. As the birds were photoraphed in cages, the bars they were behind had to be cloned out, and this took a lot of time and patience. Addition of shadows and direction of lighting effects were important factors to getting the image to look realistic.

A stray cat wandered into my house and gave birth in a flower pot (not very smart). I then moved the kitten into a shoe-box and padded it with clothes to make a nice soft bed! This was taken when it was still in the pot.

This is probably the last of my kitty pix as I just got bored taking pictures of them once their voices dropped. And that’s probably why they treat me with total indifference these days. In fact, just the other day Scratch finished his water (we don’t give him milk because he never deserves it), looked up at me and said: “SillyBoy… or whatever they call you on that bubble thing… you could have been great if you’d just kept on shooting us…” So I told him I’d shoot him if he didn’t shut up. This is Scratch, from the same shoot as CAT in BW. He’s a pedigree Blue Point and he knows it and has since grown to be a total pain in the butt. Our other Siamese is Pepsi who is a dime a dozen Apple Head and doesn’t know it and is totally OK. But he’s not as photogenic. Such is life. Grin & bear it!

This is OJ. Alas, no longer with us as he passed away very young. Here his eyes were just changeing color and I thought I’d try to get a pose out of him. Trouble was keeping him awake long enough to get a shot. Seconds after taking this, he slumped down into the jar, deep in little kitty dreamland. It wasn’t even easy getting him out !

He said, “Kanyen’keha Tewatati” (Let’s speak Mohawk).

This was one of the feral kittens born to feral parents (an orange tabby and and a grey striped tabby) – Oscar (the orange) was very friendly with me. He lost his mamma as a kitten (spent his kitten-hood in our back yard with the little striped tabby). I don’t know where they ‘stayed’, but they came to my backdoor every morning for water and food (they knew I was such a sucker). The following spring there were four new little faces – this photo was just one of the kittens. I fed all 6 of them all summer, but worried about them over the coming winter that was to come. In October we live-trapped them and took them to the shelter where, happily, they all found homes – the kittens were parceled out one at a time (that made me sad) and Oscar and Mama (that’s what we called her) went together to a farm. 75% of my profit from all sales of this card will be donated to the local animal shelter. This is Pussy Willow – the runt of the litter. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona. She set this shot up for me as I was busy trying on her owners shoe collection!

About three weeks ago I found a beautiful stray cat that had been in a terrible fight with another animal. Giving her a little first aid, food and water she was soon on her way. This pretty kitty appeared again last week and we’ve become friends. Well the poor thing has been hiding in my storage building and has given birth to at least two babies. This one I discovered yesterday.

One of my favorites. Our kitten, OJ, was shot on the earth filled flower pot. The rat was killed by another cat who dragged it into our house, and I decided to take it’s picture before giving it a proper burial. Used the same Elinchrom studio flash as with the kitten shot, hanging the rat by it’s tail from a tripod. The flowers were crushed and shot separately, and all 3 elements were put together in Photoshop. The idea for the picture came to me when, as I was looking at the original photo of the kitten on the pot, the rat was dragged in… I waited till everyone else went to bed before doing the rat shoot session. Direction of lighting and shadow effects were important to make the collage look realistic.

Lolly is the sweetest munchkin, I love her to death! Although I am really, really going to miss my cousin and her gorgie daughter when they move to Macau my compensation is the addition to my family of this little girl. It’s a bit tricky now having a Tolly and a Lolly! When I growl at Lolly for jumping all over the elderly Tolly, Tolly often gives me this kind of “what did I do?” look! But Lolly was named by the afore-mentioned gorgie daughter of my cousin who is 3 years old so there it is.

So we went to a party last night, got a little merry and filled the taxi home with balloons. Matron allowed us to keep them, on the condition that we didn’t let them anywhere near the kitties. Sadly, George has a helium addiction and is under vet’s orders not to inhale any, lest he starts reciting Shakespeare again. I’m not so sure there’s anything to worry about given that’s just the effect you get with the pink furry pills – and they’re perfectly safe. So anyway, I wanted to see what would happen if George ate a helium balloon. It has this effect, evidently…

2008. Age 21. Pencil drawing. I tried to make this little fella look sweet and endearing, like he is desperate to be loved and adored, despite his scruffy self. The depth in his eyes, his tiny little mouth, the small paw slightly reaching out: It is all his way of alluring you in. He just needs some warmth.. someone to love him, take him home and care for him. I personally think the most beautiful cats are those that appear slightly odd or those that would otherwise remain unloved… So yes, of course I love him. I hope you do too.

Inspired by a story from the Australian TV show, ‘Animal Rescue’. A stray kitten fell six metres down a drain pipe running down the side of a building and ended up in the drain somewhere below ground level. The rescuer cut open the drain, reached down and pulled the kitten out, holding it as you see in this picture – very cute and worthy of a painting! Acrylic on Canvas Stretcher, 50×60cm, August 2007
