The castle pictured here was the former home of the Earl of Limerick. Designed by Edward William Godwin in the style of a fairytale castle and built in 1867 and its about 45 minutes drive from my house. / It was in need of repair but someone’s fixing it up now. / One of the owners over the years took down all the rooves to avoid paying extortionate taxes and the place has been roofless as long as I’ve known about it. There’s a modern house next to it but down the hill and out of sight of it and it was used for the 1988 film High Spirits. Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. The Trosky castle was built in the 14th century on two basalt rocks named Panna (Virgin) and Baba (Hag). The Czech word ‘Trosky’ means ‘ruins’ and describes well the castle’s conditions after all those centuries… The castle ruin became a landmark of the National Preserve ‘Cesky raj’ (Czech Paradise, or Bohemian Paradise), which was declared a UNESCO Geopark in 2005. So many times have I admired the beautiful silhouette of Trosky at dusk, travelling along it very often when we lived in Berlin, Germany, and went to visit our parents in the Czech Republic for a weekend! Took a photo of some turrets taken in London a few years ago and merged it with a watercolour painting of mine with wings and an ethereal light source to give the turrets a kind of fairie feel since England is the source of so many wonderful magical mischievous imps.
