  • This shot was taken with a Canon AE1 35mm camera about 15 years ago and scanned into the computer. Then I tweaked it a little in Photoshop Elements 5 High on top of Carn Brea (700 feet above sea level) you will find Carn Brea Castle which looks out at some stunning views of the surrounding countryside of Cornwall. Redruth, Brea, Carnkie and Camborne are a few of the towns near by. The Castle itself can be traced back to 1379. It is a stone twin towered fortress, built by the Bassett family and is inside the ramparts of the Iron Age hill fort. It was probably built has a hunting lodge, or as a chapel to St Michael. It has been restored and extended over the years, and today has the look of a modern folly, rather than a medieval fort. The views from this spot are splendid, and you can see for miles on a bright evening. / All the Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted or Uploaded In Anyway Without My Permission. • The castle is located in what was once the very volatile border area between England and Scotland. Not only did the English and Scots fight, but the area was frequently attacked by Vikings. The castle was built in 1550, around the time that Lindisfarne Priory went out of use, and stones from the priory were used as building material. It is very small by the usual standards, and was more of a fort. The castle sits on the highest point of the island, a whin stone hill called Beblowe. It can be located in Northumberland,on Holy Island. England.

  • A panoramic view from West Princes Street Gardens taking in the enormity of Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock. Edinburgh Castle is a collection of buildings many of which are Historic Scotland Category A or B Listed Buildings. • The Ross Fountain in West Princes Street gardens with part of Edinburgh Castle (the Hospital block) in the background. Cast near Paris, France in the Durenne ironworks in the early 1860’s. It was an exhibit in the Great Exhibition in London in 1862 and was purchased for Edinburgh by Daniel Ross a local gun maker and philanthropist. After much deliberation as to what to do with it, it was finally assembled in West Princes Street Gardens in 1872. The gold coloured iron structure shows a standing naked woman at the top surrounded by four more seated naked nymphettes representing the arts, science, poetry and industry. Below the first tier are a collection of mermaids. The celebration of the naked female is typical of classical French design, but it wasn’t appreciated by everyone, Dean Ramsay (1793 – 1872) whose church, St. John’s was nearby called the fountain “grossly indecent and disgusting”. The Ross fountain is now a Category B listed structure of historic importance (HB Number 27911) under the care of Historic Scotland. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock. In recent years there have been concerns about rocks falling from the cliffs onto the gardens below, so the rather ugly netting has been draped on the rock face. Hopefully, over time, it will weather enough to be less noticeable. Princes Street Gardens at the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre were once a lake called Nor’ Loch. The Loch, which had been the trash dump of Edinburgh for centuries was drained in order to improve access from the New Town to the Old Town. Later, the Nor’ Loch was transformed into the beautiful Princes Street Gardens we see today. It is a very old site, once occupied by a small temple dedicated to the worship of the Fates, as recorded in the rare 3rd century epigraph (walled under the northern portico of the castle). Its original religious function was soon replaced by a military function, given its strategic position. In the 13th century the castle passed from the hands of the lords of Toblino into those of the lords of Campo, who owned the castle bearing the same name in the Giudicarie (Castel Campo). Later on, the castle fell into the hands of the church of Trento (1495) and the Cardinal Bernardo Clesio had the place restored and rebuilt (1536-1537) on Renaissance lines, to become a lord´s residence: it was decorated by some of the artists working at the Magno Palazzo of the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento. The prevailing 16th century elements are due to the subsequent transformations (courtyard portico and loggia, round arches) ordered by Gian Gaudenzio Madruzzo. All that remains of the Medieval castle layout are the wall to the west, a turret to the north-west of the present enclosure and the 20 meter high cylindrical tower, which may be considered a keep, strengthening the fortifications closing the summit of the fortified rock. Lake of Toblino This valley bottom lake has marsh vegetation (in particular ) and lacustrine (a few samples of “lamineto” of the ninfea gialla type); At certain points of the shore there are willow groves. The site includes the surrounding hills, where holm oaks woods grow(Celtidi australis-Quercetum ilicis). Nikon Coolpix 990
