Eilean Donan Castle one of the Iconic Scottish Castles was just a magic place to visit and photograph. I spent close to 9 hours taking in the surrounds, the atmosphere and the serenity and of course the odd photo or two. Here is one of my favourites, I really like the balance of light and the reflections. This was the 3rd last photo I took during this 9 hour period, and goes to show that patience can pay off. All money raised with the sale of my works until November goes towards the Steven T. Hill Stroke Foundation. Princes Street Gardens after a late snowfall in March 2006 with the Castle guarding the City
Eilean Donan Castle, winter 2007
Romance depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits etc Eilean Donan castle bathing in the early afternoon light _As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most important attractions in the Scottish highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932_ / http://www.eileandonancastle.com/
Never say never… This is in many ways a companion piece to “Knock Bay” and is in fact the castle right next to the rock formation in that painting- the ruin I said in that description that I would probably never get around to painting!

Moonrise over a frosty Duart castle on the Isle of Mull, Western Scotland.
Inveraray castle on the shores of Loch fynne, Highlands of Scotland, bathed in dewey early morning light of midsummer greeness
My good friend and Celt Ossian kindly let me take some photographs of him wearing a traditional plaid. We lived on the Isle of Mull together for nearly 5 years. The castle in the background is Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, where Ossian worked for a time . I decided to upload this image today in honour of being awarded Image of the Week by the group ‘The Scots are Coming’ .
Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, Scotand
Castle Kilchurn on the banks of Loch Awe, the site of many battles in Scottish history. The McGregors were the dominant clan in the Loch Awe area until being eclipsed by the Campbells who built Castle Kilchurn in 1450. / The Castle was held by the Campbells for 400 years and became a government stronghold in Jacobean times, but with the pacification of the Highland Clans and the dispersal of the McGregors, the Castle outlived its usefulness. / The Castle was abandoned completely at the end of the 18th Century and then had the misfortune to be burnt out after a “lightning strike” Most likely a stray McGregor…

Collaboration with dinghysailor1 / A collaboration with my great RB friend, the talented Photographic Artist dinghysailor1. I had discussed the possibility of working together to make a few images and Maggie was very keen. She went out and took a handful of superb shots of very historic landmarks in Scotland, based on a list of subject matter I was interested in using for a photo-manipulation – things that sparked my imagination. Then I lost my editing program, and as a consequence, a lot of my motivation to create anything. But I got a replacement program recently, and just finished this artwork today. I’m very pleased to have her as an RB friend and it’s great to work together ! :)) Here is Maggie’s Original Photograph / To view Maggie’s excellent Portfolio visit dinghysailor1 Here’s a photograph I took of the moon recently and used in this Artwork / Featured in the AW Welcome Center on Sunday 23/8/2009 / Thank you to all the Moderators for the feature !

Please View Large Eilean Donan is a Scottish Heritage Site. Wikipedia © The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defence against the Vikings. By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth). In 1511, the Macraes, as protectors of the Mackenzies, became the hereditary Constables of the Castle. / In 1539 Iain Dubh Matheson, chief of the Clan Matheson died whilst defending the Castle on Eilean Donan island against the Clan MacDonald of Sleat on behalf of the Clan Macrae and Clan Mackenzie. / In April 1719 the castle was occupied by Spanish troops attempting to start another Jacobite Rising. The castle was recaptured, and then demolished, by three Royal Navy frigates on 10–13 May 1719. The Spanish troops were defeated a month later at the Battle of Glen Shiel. / The castle was restored in the years between 1919 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the castle. In 1983 The Conchra Charitable Trust was formed by the Macrae family to care for the Castle. A curious distinction is that it has one of only two left-handed spiral staircases in a castle in Great Britain, as the reigning king at the time of building held a sword with his left hand. One strange feature of the castle today is the grey field gun from the Great War, positioned outside the building by a war memorial and fountain dedicated to the men of the Macrae clan who died in the war. / Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan Macrae. In 2001, the island had a population of just one person. Acrylic on canvas Original Size: 500mm x 500mm As the title suggests, this composition is designed from various aspects from the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, mainly Crail, Pittenweem, Alstruther and / St. Monance, the wooden fishing boat KY 986 is the last of its kind.
Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !! A three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 50D, polarising filter fitted, iso 100, f23, Auto WB, processed in Photomatix, then sprucing up in Adobe Photoshop CS3. / I used HDR because of the extreme light / shadow. http://www.redbubble.com/groups/the-women-photographer / AND / http://www.redbubble.com/groups/style-class-elegance MORE FROM MY ISLE OF SKYE SET…..
