  • Smailholm Sunset
    by Colin Cartwright

    US$3.79–US$101.08

The defensive Tower house of Smailholm, just over the Scottish border, near Kelso. The tower was built in the mid 1400’s at a time when lawlessness and violent bands of reivers, ravaged the lands both sides of the English-Scottish border. And a solitary white swan, resides below the Tower Even today, the landscape is lonely, and you can easily imagine the starkness of those dark days.

  • Sizergh castle
    by Jason Connolly

    US$3.56–US$95.00

Had a great day today, the weather was fantastic, yesterday it rained all day and today sunday was my day off and after church, the family… the good lady, myself , my 2 lads and nana went of to Sizergh castle up in the south lakes close to Kendal in Cumbria England, never been before, fabulous place and took loads of decent shots and the sun was shining all day, unheard of in this part of the world LOL.. Anyway here is a little history of the place: The core of Sizergh Castle is a 14th century pele tower. The castle was built within the wide band of land which, before the Union of 1603, frequently changed hands between England and Scotland. The tower has walls 9-foot-thick which still reach to 60 feet at the battlements. During Tudor times the castle was extended to the north and west. These wings have fine panelling and decoration. The Great Hall, built in 1450, was altered and decorated between 1558 and 1575. Some further changes were made during the late 18th century and the castle reflects the period of prosperty during Tudor times. The panelling of the Inlaid Chamber was sold to the Victoria and Albert museum in 1891. However, the museum has loaned back two panels together with the inlaid bed which was made to match the room. The castle contains English and French furniture, silver and china and family portraits. There is also a collection of Stuart portraits and Stuart and Jacobite relics. In 1239 the castle passed by marriage into the hands of the Strickland family. Unfortunately no photography was allowed inside, I could have had a beano in there with my camera…

HDR one shot, edited using Photoshop CS2 and Photomatix HDR software / If you are gonna visit a castle in England, well this has to be in the top 5 best to go and see, well worth visiting. / Warwick Castle was built on the orders of William the Conqueror in 1068 as part of a defensive chain of castles established to maintain power in his new territories. It is possible that some kind of defensive structure existed on the site in the early tenth century or before belonging to Ethelfleda, the daughter of Alfred the Great, The castle has been remodelled and strengthened over the years to the point we see it today. The first castle consisted of a huge mound of earth topped with a wooden fort. To the north of the mound was the bailey surrounded by a ditch and wooden palisade. The castle was positioned by the side of the River Avon which gave protection to the castle on that side. The wooden structure on top of the mound was replaced by a stone shell keep some of which can still be seen. The wooden palisade around the bailey has also been replaced by stone walls and towers. During the Baron’s War Simon de Montfort’s forces attacked and damaged the defenses. The Beauchamp family took possession of the castle shortly after and owned the castle for almost 200 years. In the late fourteenth century the several major changes were made to the castle including the great hall and domestic ranges, a water gate and improvements to the main gatehouse and the barbican infront of it. Over the centuries the castle became an important seat of power and was the home for the Earls of Warwick who played an important role in shaping the history of England. Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick was known as the ‘Kingmaker’ for his involvement in bringing Edward IV to the throne. The castle is now owned by the Tussaud Group and is possibly the best castle to visit in Britain due to the wide range of events and attractions that can be seen. /

This castle is an imaginary castle created as a tribute to a historical American castle by that name. It is imaginary because there are only the remains of ruins where it once existed. It is a part of American history, but remains a mystery even today. In 1710, Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood was sent from England to take charge of the Virginia colony. In 1714, he settled a group of German immigrants on the banks of the Rapidan River in what is now a part of eastern Orange County. He also built a palatial home there, with both the settlement and his home being called “Germanna.” At the time, Germanna represented the western frontier for English settlement in the New World. In 1716, Spotswood led an expedition from Germanna westward over the Blue Ridge Mountains, a venture designed to publicize the fact that the mountains were passable and that rich lands lay beyond. The expedition succeeded in re-igniting the westward expansion of the colony and contributed significantly to the ultimate settling of America. The persons of wealth and power who accompanied Spotswood were dubbed by him “Knights of the Golden Horseshoe,” many of whom figured prominently in later Virginia history. A wide variety of mineral deposits were discovered in the county, including iron ore, which Spotswood successfully mined. In 1732, William Byrd II visited Germanna to inspect Spotswood’s mines and furnaces, penning a glowing report on the economic progress there. Byrd was also impressed by Spotswood’s home, which he called the Enchanted Castle, the name by which its remains are known today. In later years, gold was mined commercially in Orange County, with one mine continuing in operation until 1937. / ________ “27th….Then I came into the main county road, that leads from Fredericksburg to Germanna, which last place I reached in ten miles more. This famous town consists of Col. Spotswood’s enchanted castle on one side of the street, and a baker’s dozen of ruinous tenements on the other, where so many German families had dwelt some years ago…” -William Byrd / _____ Until very recently the location of Spotswood’s Germanna was unknown, despite numerous speculations. The first definitive evidence of the Enchanted Castle site was found by Ned Heite, Howard McCord, and Randolph Grymes in 1969. The site of the Enchated Castle had been radically changed since the 18th century when Spotswood lived there and there was a small town. The Gordon House was built on the site of the actual castle after it burnt, destroying what little remained of the Enchanted Castle. Little excavation and research took place after this initial find until the site was threatened in 1976 and again in 1983 by developers. Both of these threats led to salvage archaeology. In 1984, a large scale salvage project was undertaken which identified the majority of footprint of mansion foundation. • A painting I sometimes wish I hadn’t sold, the ruin of Dunscaith Castle, on Skye, is maybe my favourite place in the world. So far (along with “The Connectivity Of History) it has only been the subject of two paintings- but I think I could probably get a whole exhibition out of this one location. Unfortunately, this particular painting is only available as a card because it is a digital transfer of an old stylee 35mm negative (remember the pre-digital camera days?).

  • Another of the many castles around here. Perhaps one good thing which came from man’s war-like nature is that it left us some picturesque defensive structures. Watercolour about 12” x 16”.
