  • It’s like a little town straight out of a storybook! The Castleton Castle is a bit tired though… it’s probably only a thousand years old or something!!

  • Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, England / (featured as ‘Hogwarts’ in the first 2 Harry Potter movies)

  • Belvoir Castle (pronounced Beaver like the animal) is in Leicestershire, England and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland. / Monotone seems to suit such buildings well, although I like this image as much as for the sky as for the castle itself.

  • View from the top of White Horse Hill, England. /   /

  • Sited atop the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, Lindisfarne Castle is one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England and can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The castle is excellently maintained by the National Trust and the view from the top truly magnificent – it is also unique. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: England. /

  • Bolton Castle, a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, is located in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, England. The nearby settlement Castle Bolton takes its name from the castle. It was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor, and is an example of a quadrangular castle. The castle, now a tourist attraction, is still owned by the descendants of the Scrope family. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War, but much of it remains. Mary, Queen of Scots, was held for six months in the castle. Several movies and television productions have used the site as a location including Ivanhoe, Elizabeth, Heartbeat, and All Creatures Great and Small. • Dunstanburgh castle is now owned by the National Trust and in the care of English Heritage. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. It lies within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Turner painted Dunstanburgh many times, usually rising at dawn to do so.

  • Pevensey Castle was built on the spot where William the Conquer landed in 1066. He then marched his army 10 miles to the battle of Hastings. There’s a bit of history for you. This was another dull day so I cheated and added a sky from another pic, which also gave the illusion of a non existant bay. Along with a non existant looking light house that was actually a church steeple from Tuscany.

  • Durham Cathedral / In 1650, Durham Cathedral was used by Cromwell as a makeshift prison to hold Scottish prisoners-of-war after the Battle of Dunbar of September 3, 1650. It is estimated that as many as 3,000 prisoners died in the cathedral itself, where they were kept in inhumane conditions, largely without food, water or heat. The prisoners destroyed much of the cathedral woodwork for firewood but Prior Castell’s clock, featuring the Scottish thistle, was spared. Their bodies were buried in unmarked graves. The survivors were shipped as slave labour to North America. In 1946 during work to install a new central heating system at the Cathedral, a mass grave of the Scottish soldiers was uncovered. In 1993 the Scottish Covenanter’s Memorials Association discussed with the Cathedral the construction of a memorial to the soldiers,

  • Dunstanburgh Castle Dunstanburgh Castle lies on a spectacular headland on the coast of Northumberland in northern England, between the villages of Craster and Embleton . The castle is the largest in Northumberland and the site shows traces of much earlier occupation before the erection of the castle was started in 1313 by the Earl of Lancaster . The castle is now owned by the National Trust and in the care of English Heritage. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. It lies within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

  • Dunstanburgh castle did not play a significant part in the border warfare against Scotland. In the Wars of the Roses the castle was held for the Lancastrians in 1462 and 1464. The damage done was not made good and the castle fell steadily into decay. A report in 1538 mentioned it as being a “very reuynus howsse and of smalle strength” and another source in 1550 described it as in “wonderful great decay”. It continued to deteriorate and was robbed of stone for the building of other places in the area.Turner painted Dunstanburgh many times, usually rising at dawn to do so.

  • This will be the last of the Scotland shots, however I may dig one or two out at a later date? The striking ruins of Urquhart Castle are situated on the banks of Loch Ness a couple of miles from from Drumnadrochit. Some people say this is where Nessie plays as she has a love of this place and you can see why, it is just so beautiful here.
