Ive tried merging two photos here to give a taste of this wonderful castle both in and out. Castell Coch is locally known as the fairytale castle, set in a wooded glade at tongwynlais, just outside cardiff, south wales. / Built in the 1870’s for the third marques of Bute to a design by William Burgess this castle possesses the most remarkable interior decoration, it was built on the remains of a genuine 12th century castle and was built in two stages. The castle was probably founded by a welsh lord in c1240-65. / It features a round tower and a D shaped courtyard and is built of rough rubble sandstone from which the castle gets its name castell coch (red castle. / The interior is definitely the best I have ever seen in a castle, its furnished with stunning ceilings, scenes from Aesop’s fables on the walls with bird and animal mouldings around the fantastic furnishings and fireplaces. / Not surprisingly there are tales of the castle being haunted by a cavalier. / On top of of the many splendours of the castle itself, the wooded glade gives a perfect setting for a picnic but the castle also has a lovely family run cafe that serves home-made meals and cakes including the very traditional welsh cakes. / A trip to this beautiful castle is a trip memories are made of.

Lochindorb Castle is located on the bleak Dava Moor south of Nairn and Forres on the way to Grantown-on-Spey and Aviemore, in the south-eastern heart of the Scottish Highlands. It sits on a partly man-made island in this remote loch, 6.5 miles north-west of Grantown-on-Spey. Lochindorb comes from the Gaelic meaning ‘Loch of Trouble’. Dating back to the 13th century, it was originally held by the Comyns, but later occupied by the English and was visited by Edward I in 1303 when he stayed here for 9 days, hunting out on the moor. Later it was used as a prison and also a garrison for English troops. At the end of the 14th century, it was gifted by Robert II to his third son, the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, Alexander Stewart, who rampaged around quite a bit of the local area. Lochindorb was said to be his favourite haunt. Although now in ruins, the castle was still in fairly good condition up until the end of the 18th century when its four 7-metre high round towers were intact. The main quadrangular courtyard is 48×38 metres in dimensions and is enclosed by a 2-metre thick wall which stands 6 metres high. A later extension to the south was made probably to give the island extra protection from assault.

Hever Castle The Birth place of Henry vlll second wife Anne Boleyn. I was not aware of this building until we did research into Henry vlll for our Daughters homework. hope you like it to. The building and interior is in such wonderful condition, it is well worth a visit. There have been three main periods in the construction of this historic castle. The oldest part of the castle dates to 1270 and consisted of the gatehouse and a walled bailey. In the early 1500s the Bullen family bought the castle and added a Tudor dwelling within the walls and so it became the childhood home of its most famous inhabitant, Anne Boleyn. It later passed into the ownership of Henry’s fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. From 1557 onwards the Castle was owned by a number of families including the Waldegraves, the Humfreys and the Meade Waldos. Finally, in 1903, William Waldorf Astor invested time, money and imagination in restoring the Castle, building the ’Tudor Village’ and creating the gardens and lake.

Peel Castle, on the Isle of Man, is one of my favourite places in the world. On this side of the world, most people don’t even know where the Isle of Man is, and those who do usually think of motorcycle racing or tail-less cats, not castles. The castle is on its own little island (accessed via a causeway) and has an atmosphere fitting for its fascinating history. The spectacular archaeological find of Norse grave-goods (including an impressive necklace) has confirmed its early habitation, and the ruins of St. German’s Cathedral within the castle walls are stunning. It was last used to ward off the French navy in the nineteenth century. I think it’s one of the world’s best-kept castle secrets! (This is the colour version of a photo I posted some time ago in sepia.)

An enticing view of Brodie Castle, near Inverness, Scotland, greets you as you approach. This castle is nothing like as well known as others in the area such as Cawdor and Dunrobin, but offers a very Scottish feel with its turrets and towers.

This shows the recently restored Telford Suspension Bridge leading to Conwy Castle in North Wales. The bridge, which was opened in 1826 and is in the shadow of the town’s castle, was part of Telford’s plans for a highway between Chester and Holyhead. Up until 1958, the bridge was the main road bridge into Conwy. Telford’s creations – the Menai and Conwy suspension bridges and the aqueducts of Chirk and Pontcysyllte – are credited with transforming life in north Wales.

. / Located approximately four miles south-east of Perth in Scotland, this is one of the best castles I have come across. / The conditions and ambiance of this beautiful building is a credit to the Wemyss Family, who not only built it back in 1560, but who also live in it today. / So take a walk up into the ceiling or stroll down to the River Tay. / You won’t be sorry….. This is the ruined stronghold which was once Cessford Castle. Standing in the middle of nowhere it once had great importance and prestige overlooking the borderlands between England and Scotland, only now to be frequented by the native sheep and wildlife.

This is Unst Castle in the northerly Shetland Islands, formerly owned by Denmark. Unst Castle is the most northerly castle in the British Isles and is on one of the most remote and beautiful islands I have ever visited. /

Taken on New Years Day, late afternoon, the sun going down on the horizon bathing parts of the castle walls in bright yellow light, and yes the sky was really that colour. Ok so hdr might have accentuated it a bit, but it was still a wonderfull sight.

. / Ludlow Castle dominates the town of Ludlow in Shropshire, England. / Construction began in the late 11th Century as the border stronghold of one of the Marcher Lords, Roger de Lacy, and over the centuries it has played host to many royal families including Catherine of Aragon. / The circular tower inside the castle grounds that you see, is a beautiful Norman Chapel. / I just love returning to this castle, especially when the big annual “Ludlow Produce Fayre” is on in the main front grounds. Castle Rushen, in the historic Manx capital of Castletown, is claimed to be the finest medieval castle in the British Isles (and I agree), and yet it is so little known. It is in excellent condition, having been the residence of the Lords of Mann throughout the centuries, and is wonderful to tour. It even has a resident cat (who is very startling when he wakes up among the wax models), and the pub across the road (in the very left of the picture) does a good lunch (and serves excellent Manx ale)… after which one can ramble along the Silverburn to the ruins of Rushen Abbey.
