Bears are cool. Though they’re not all flufffy and cuddly natured to be sure. / / Since mid 2000, in North America alone, there are more than 26 people who have been mauled to death by bears. Some of them just babies and in the spring of 2006 a 6 year old and an 11 year old just a year later. / / Americans have long been aware of the dangers of wild bears but there are times for being more vigilant. / / While a human family is easily satisfied by the contents of a picnic basket, that’s what you look like to a bear. A picnic basket. Especially after a winter of hybernation and giving birth to a cub. Which is exactly what the husband of 70 year old Cecile Lavoie, discovered last year after she didn’t return from a solo fishing trip. His search for her ended at a bear dragging her body off into the woods. / / I’m doing this art to present the lighter side of these magnificent creatures and point out that they aren’t menacing. Of the more than 300 species of shark found in Australian waters, there are only a couple of species that are known to attack humans. Yet 2009 will surely go down in the history books as having a record number of shark attacks. / / This summer alone it seemed like every week there was another person emerging from the water with bits missing. Sometimes twice a week. That’s if they were lucky enough to come out of the water at all. / / And even though you are more likely to die of a bee sting, there are now cries to increase the quota of shark fishing to cull the populations that have been living in our coastal waters for millions of years. / / I think it’s important for us all to respect that the moment we step off the land and into the sea, we are out of our depth and are no longer at the top of the food chain. / / I’m doing this art to present the lighter side of these primordial creatures and point out that they aren’t menacing. They’re just hungry. / /

This is the second of a series of illustrations I was asked to make, using the TropoGirl character adapted, to prepare a presentation for a large Chinese company, owned by a woman who had a life similar to this girl, who was very poor, living in the country and left her home, family and boyfriend to try a life in the big city. She ended up succeeding and building a garment empire. Due to a disagreement it ended up not being presented to that company, but it’s here, for your eyes. I just didn’t want to leave it sitting there, forgotten in a folder.
