Zombies love brains. Let’s flip open the head of Luckyvegetable / and find ourselves a truly entertaining feed. This shirt tickled my funny bone in particular, / with a very obvious joke. ;o) What would make a better date and why? A zombie, vampire, werewolf or Frankenstein’s monster? Hmm…I’m thinking that sounds like the start of a great party already! I suppose I should stick to my theory that zombies would make the best lovers..well, the most persistent anyway. All that romantic mindless groaning teamed with the unstoppable undead shuffle….quite a combo, really. Of course, I have been known to keep company with at least one wolf, and I’m told by recent bestselling pop literature that vampires are really really ridiculously good-looking, so maybe I should keep my options open… Where’s the magic? With the unicorns, I assume. I can’t be sure though, as only virgins can get close enough to check. Ahem. If a picture tells a thousand words, what are your pictures telling us? Mostly? They’re pieces of my already scatterbrained imagination. Randomness personified. Which kind of gives you an idea as to how difficult a job my careers advisor at school had. He ended up giving me the choice of either prison warden, or clown. I kid you not. Obviously this man was paid the big bucks for his keen insight. What’s the best about the bubble? I’m going to go with cheesy, and say that I found people to love here, in a real grown-up, family kind of way. And it’s helped me understand that I won’t be laughed out of the room (metaphorically) when I put up my work. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? When I was a kid, I had this shirt with a picture from Disney’s Cinderella on it, only it really was like a still from the film, rather than a design, and it showed the little cowering mouse with the floppy hat holding a piece of cheese bigger than his head. Looking on (and about to eat him) was the evil looking cat. It was such a macabre thing to put on a 4 year old’s shirt, it makes me wonder what the designer was thinking-or smoking- when it was deemed appropriate. I remember the back of the shirt was lemon yellow, and I wore it with ‘matching’ yellow shorts with an arty paint splotch pattern on them, yellow knee high socks, and my trademark rainbow stripy sandals. I was obviously a fashion genius, even then. Pfffft… Who do you suspect is secretly an alien? I suspect most politicians are aliens, if only because most of them lack sufficient eyebrow control, and this makes me suspicious. Also they have holes in their theories (and in some cases, their grammar) which makes it plausible that they’re merely stretching for time till the mother ship arrives. Let’s hope there’s at least one chocolate loving E.T. type among them. What are your opening and closing thoughts every (or most) days? It used to be fluffy things like “what are rainbows made of” but lately it’s just the generic “and why do/did I have to go to work?” Apart from that though, I manage to keep my brain at least partially insane for the majority of my awake time. It tends to scare the normals, but it keeps it real. Boo-yah. What makes you warm and fuzzy inside (If anything)? When I eat a woolly mammoth? Because it’s woolly? And really big? Where do you find inspiration the most? It’s kinda like freaky lightening, although I have always likened my creative brain to a giant soup pot in which things bubble until they’re ready to be presented to the rest of the species. I think it’s when they float to the top. Yeah, so, it’s like cooking gnocci, only, those are my ideas. Man. What did you want to be when you were 6 years old? (And did you eat your vegetables? ;o) I wanted to be a pirate king. I told my kindergarten teacher and got in trouble when she told me I couldn’t because only boys could be kings, and I told her where to go. Yar. Oh, and of course I didn’t eat my vegetables. My Mother used to boil them grey. What do you take me for? Vegetables rot your brain. Best to leave them be. ;oP And on another note, the never lazing, always amazing Thickblackoutline was one of the few Shirthead victims who took up my offer of purchasing the original art… And she got it framed! Yay! Jen is great. Here it is. It looks AWESOME :oD

I am waiting for my very own copy of this week’s featured shirt to arrive in the mail. It is Angry Jellyfish / / by Chris Richards / / and it is my pleasure to step back this week to shine a spotlight here ... First and foremost! Do you, yourself, have a short attention span? Hmm… well, most who know me probably wouldn’t say so, but I’d say that I do! I don’t see it as a bad thing, though. I think that creative thinking results in sporadic thinking, or constant thinking and exercising of the mind… in peak circumstances, anyway. Not everyone may agree with me, I’m sure, but as far as I’m concerned if you aren’t working away 200% in the mind, then your creativity capacity has not been met. It’s not to say that great things can’t come out, but it’ll probably take longer. Again, personal opinion. Why Angry Jellyfish? In all honesty, it was a combination of a few things before the shirt made it to the final “Angry Jellyfish!” stage. At first I wanted something obscure and random, because obscure and random is often much more amusing than if I’d thrown a dog onto the shirt. The next thing I wanted was something that was not overly complicated to draw, as I am a photographer for a reason. So, once I came to the sudden conclusion that even a platypus was too difficult to draw, I looked for something even simpler. I ran through the animals I knew in my head, and when ‘jellyfish’ came up, nothing else seemed to be made up of simply squiggly lines and a semi-half-circle; simplicity rules all. Then it was just a matter of giving it some facial features, which they don’t have to begin with, so I thought making him angry in the process was the icing on the cake. What is your favourite tshirt you’ve ever worn? Well, I asked around and apparently had a nice shirt with three monkeys on it that would never come off me when I was three, but now, I really can’t say I’ve had a solid favourite shirt. Now, I am the youngest of three, so for a large part of my life anything that was brand new was always a treat, since older brother and, sigh… sister… hand-me-downs were only oh-so-fun and exciting. At the risk of sounding like a typical, cliche teenager, I’m into graphic tees and such, but nothing has come calling my name over anything else yet. I’m also a super warm person, so especially in the summer and even spring and fall, you’d have better luck finding me without a shirt on at all than with one, not that you all needed or wanted to know that ;) Where do you find inspiration? Oh, man. Inspiration? Everywhere… everything. I know I’m being featured here for my shirt, but if you really took a look at both me and other tshirt designers, its no secret that graphic design is second in line to my photography. Now, when it comes to my photos, a lot of what I like to shoot turns out to be the more small, obscure things, granted, they’re not portraits or street photography. I like turning the ordinary and unseen into something worth stopping to take a look at. The image in my folio Keyhole is actually on a chest we’ve had in our basement for years on end, and my entire family has noted how they’d’ve never stopped twice to look at it until they saw my photo. So, I guess it’s about finding the beauty in everything that’s around me, even if it’s not easy. You’re a young’un (17, folks) and already displaying some strong talent. So imagine you’re 40 and looking back over your life –– what are your highlights? Hmm, highlights, eh? Well, in all honesty I see a family in there at some point, but I’m slightly a softie like that… you’ll notice it too in my bio about what fits well in the palm of my hands. But I’d also like to have traveled more or less across the world and back again since there’s so much to see out there. Career wise, a successful freelance/commission business wouldn’t hurt, especially if it’s to National Geographic or some fine photographic establishment that just so happens to pay me to run out to amazing beautiful places to do what I love. I don’t know what it is yet, but I’d also like to make some kind of discovery, although I’ll let that slide past the 40 year mark if I have to. You know, shipwrecks and lost cities and the likes as little side adventures and photo ops on my main journeys. I talk a lot… Is there anything you’ve ever found vastly amusing that nobody else has? Plain and simple. While playing some video games one giddy night early in the morning, I looked down and, to my astonishment, I had feet. Yes, I found that extremely amusing. Why? I have no clue. Have they entertained me since? Not at all… but for 30 seconds, it was magical…. ...so, who’s going to stop reading this/NOT take an interest in my work because of that? ;) If you had the chance to put something in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you put in there? Frankly I’d like to leave some kind of mass storage of photos however I could, whether electronically or… I dunno, but there’d be a lot. Even looking back at photos of my parents, or grandparents, it looks like such a different time, almost unrealistic, yet the photos are proof. I also think photographs can communicate much more than what meets the eye (again, my bio.. Atwood quote) and, yea… I dunno. I guess ultimately everyone’s greatest fear that comes along with dying is how they’ll be remembered, or what sort of impact they made on the world. If my impact was revealing my world to an entirely different world, than I think I’d have done something amazing and significant. What awaits you in Europe? What are you looking for there? It’s actually nothing overly exciting, I hate to say. It’s a trip planned through the school, buuut I will be able to run around with all of my friends there for 18 days. We’re visiting 16 different cities in France and Italy, so it should be nice, and my apologies to all those in the UK for not stopping by =( For the greatest part, I love traveling and seeing the world – or, I think I will. I’ve always had the itch, and have traveled around parts of Canada on my own, but I want to get out of here and explore someplace new. I know it’s not backpacking, but I think it’ll be a nice crash course on the two countries for later adventures; for now, I have no problem having my stops planned, meals ready, and sights set to see. What do I want to see there? Everything, and I plan on getting as close to that point as I can, so be prepared for super photo uploadage when I get backl =) Aaand cut! Caanan here again, I also recommend Think but, head on over, check it all out ... And bubble on over next Sunday night/monday morning for a new Shirtheads! Caanan. Shirtheads - featuring Tambatoys
by caanan/ “Tambatoys”...
/ Tambatoys plays in the sandbox this week! I have ordered my own print of this tee to wear til it fades, or I rip it on something (I’m too lazy to avoid sharp objects) and I love it! for two reasons… 1. It celebrates a carnival/sideshow industry stalwart and b) because sometimes I feel like I too, am helpless against a higher power. Whether it’s fate, or the claw, let me go, dammit! The Claw / What is the attraction of the claw machine? I will admit I was super in love with these arcade games when I was a kid, and I spent many hours and 20c coins trying to win myself toys. When I was 20 though I remember taking my 7 year-old cousin to the movies and there was a claw machine there she begged me for a $1 to play. I gently explained that they were rigged and a waste of money and time etc and she looked so disheartened I felt too guilty of depriving her of that hope of winning something so I gave her a dollar and off she went for her one try. And can you believe it, she came back grinning from ear to ear with her stuffed toy. I had to restrain myself from jealously ripping it off her! There is no doubting your style as instantly recognisable. Where does it come from? I have always loved to draw and it’s really the only thing I ever did well in at school. I studied ceramics at art school because I thought it may be easier to make a living from than other artistic pursuits. I did ceramics for a while but my interest in illustration and painting never went away. I became inspired by modern Japanese art and I’m a huge fan of cartoons in general, so after I stopped doing ceramics a few years ago, I decided to concentrate on drawing. What did you love playing with most as a kid? Why? I was a mega fan of Lego and had dreams of being an architect but I also loved board games especially when they were interactive games like ‘Mouse trap’ or ‘Operation’. I was also a serious roller-skater and BMX gal. What do you love playing with most as an adult? Why? These days I love playing with paint, or my Mac and Photoshop, or my newest toy, a Wacom board which I am still getting the hang of, men can be quite fun too :) What has been your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? When I was a kid I had a white tee with a glitter transfer of three trees which I loooved! I recently bought a tee by illustrator Jen Corace which I love and a couple of favs from RB are ’Robot with victim noir style’ by BigFatRobot and ‘Coffy rabbit’ by your fine self will be my next purchase! You just had the perfect day. What did you get up to? Ok, to me the perfect day involves breakfast at a café, a visit to the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) a stroll along the Sydney Harbour foreshore, a yummy lunch and bottle of wine in a great pub, a spot of shopping, and a gorgeous man to do it with, the day I mean, lol. What scares you? There are many, many things that scare me but recently I have decided to try and live with less fear, although dusk still makes me really anxious! Is there anything you’ve ever found entirely hilarious that no-one else has? Yes, me! I constantly crack myself up. Seriously, I laugh a lot of the time, usually at my own silliness. Someone hands you a bunch of primary school kids and says ‘Entertain them. Seeya at five.’ What do you do? Get the paints and brushes out and let their imaginations run wild. If that doesn’t work, panic and run away! What are your minor and/or major goals right now? My minor goals at the moment are to keep creating, get my art selling in more outlets, and have another solo painting exhibition, and just to appreciate and enjoy all the great people and things in my life. My major goal (dream) is to start my own kids tee label and own a print gallery that stocks affordable art. applause :oD And remember, folks, come back next week, for more t-shirty goodness. Shirtheads - featuring Ross Robinson
by caananIt’s the age old question… quantity or quality? / In the case of Ross Robinson / !http://imag…
It’s the age old question… quantity or quality? / In the case of Ross Robinson / / what happens if you have both? I had a virtual smorgasbord of designs / to pick from, but this one / / screamed to me with a very simple gag, so let’s get to it! If a robot and a monkey had a child in this day and age, map out that unfortunate love child’s life for us… I actually think a robot/monkey hybrid would be a very lucky child in this day and age. People love robots; people love monkeys, so a combination of the two would be insanely popular. He would be the cool kid in class, the one who always got picked first when choosing teams and the first one to get laid. Later on, he would be the singer/songwriter/lead guitarist in a kickass insanely popular indie band that never loses its credibility despite outselling Mariah Carey and the Beatles combined. After a brief stint as a leading man in many blockbusters and acclaimed arthouse films about gay robot cowboy monkeys, he would turn his talents to politics becoming first the governor of Wyoming and later the first non-American, non-human President of the United States of America (let’s face it, he’s got a better chance of winning than a woman or a black man). In his two, four-year terms he would end war, eradicate poverty, solve the global warming crisis and invent not one, but two new flavours of twinkie. After retiring he would write a series of books so bloody good that James Patterson and Dan Brown would hang themselves to the overwhelming relief of the literary world. What is the best toy ever invented? Mego dolls. (Check out www.megomuseum.com) I had a Batman and Robin from the age of 4 and along with my Six Million Dollar Man were my favourite toys in the world. Unfortunately my mother gave them away when I moved out of home and I have spent quite a bit of money and time replacing them on eBay. Mego were great. They did Superheroes, TV Shows, Movies, you name it. They were wonderfully crap with their odd ‘real hair’ and ‘real clothes’ but the amount of love kids had for them was undeniable. The company went bust in 1983 after turning down the offer of making the Star Wars figures. Stupid stupid stupid. Your work has a strong satirical edge to it. Why all the satire? Art Buchwald said ‘You can’t make up anything anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you’re doing is recording it.’ Which unfortunately is true. Satire used to be about holding up a distorted mirror to society to exaggerate things to make a point. These days however you don’t need the mirror to be distorted, you just need to get people to thinking past their attenuated attention spans. That is the difficult part. This is not something new however; the extremely talented satirist and musician Tom Lehrer said in 1973 when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize, “It was at that moment that satire died,” says Lehrer, “There was nothing more to say after that.” I was one year old at the time. I think satire has survived – I was raised on Pickering, Paul Rigby and Patrick Cook cartoons, not to mention Kenny Everett, D-Generation and Fast Forward which has influenced the way I look at the world. When you look at the public figures today – politicians and celebrities alike, they are humourless, gormless hollow men (and women). That’s why we need humour. And gorm. Lots and lots of gorm. If you could be responsible for one big thing, but no-one knew it was you, what would it be? The assassination of Céline Dion. I don’t think I need to explain this one. I know though, if I pulled it off I wouldn’t be able to help myself at parties. / “You know that shooting of Céline Dion?” / “Yeah! Wasn’t it brilliant?” / “That was me.” What are you stark-raving passionate about? I am not a naturally passionate person. I get quite angry at stupidity and hypocrisy and am well on my way to becoming the ranting old curmudgeon I wish to be when I’m 80ish. A friend of mine has called me ‘the angriest man in Stanmore’ (a la Nick Hornby’s ‘How To Be Good’). What are you guilty of? Technically, nothing. I was acquitted on all charges. I didn’t do it, nobody saw me do it, you can’t prove anything. More generally though, I would say the big 7 – pride, envy, greed, wrath with an emphasis on lust, gluttony and sloth. Those last three are definitely the best. Especially if you can combine them. Rather like the Romans did. The vomitorium didn’t just invent itself you know. How did you find the bubble? What made you stick around? What made you take to tshirting? I was introduced to RedBubble by my good friend David Gilliver who has his photographs on here. (Please go and check out his work now. Well, not right now obviously – finish reading about me, and then go and check out him.) I took to making shirts like a duck to knitting. Seriously – I have been a graphic designer for years but a very lazy one. It was only last year when I came across a one colour t-shirt design contest that I did my first shirt (the decidedly unpopular ‘Robot Monkey Love’). It didn’t win and it wasn’t until RB that I did my second shirt ‘Evil Naked Dolls’. I sold one within a week (much to the chagrin of Mr Gilliver) and have been hooked ever since. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? It was a shirt I got for my birthday back in 1998 – there was a drawing of a cow floating in a tank with bubbles emerging from its rear end with the words “Arty Farty” underneath. I assume it was taking the piss out of Damian Hirst which was great because I think he is one of the biggest frauds ever to inflict themselves on the art world. Unfortunately it is now quite worn and full of holes. I have never been able to find a replacement. If anyone sees one and wants to send it to me, I take an XL. My other all-time favourite shirt I had when I was five. It was free dress day at school and my mother made for me a Batfink shirt which was basically just a big red “B” on a yellow shirt. I was in heaven. Say it with me now, “My wings are like a shield of steel!” Where and when do you get your ideas? A combination of 30+ years of absorbing popular culture like a large ADHD sponge and an intrinsic need to create new stuff all the time. The ideas usually come to me when I should be doing something else – e.g. paid work, sleeping, driving which is bloody inconvenient. I think I need to trade in my muse for one with a better sense of timing. If you could resurrect one person from history to have a day time talk show, who would it be? I’m going to have to say Caligula. Not only was he mad as a hat full of badgers stirred with a crazy stick, but his carrying ons would be a perfect match for the sort of guests you get on Jerry Springer. “So you slept with your brother’s wife and are now going to have a sex change to be her lesbian lover? Big deal! I’m a god who had sex with three of his sisters and made my horse a consul and a priest! You’re going to have to lift your game mate.” The Tom Cruise interview would be television gold. Thanks Ross :o) Ok. Now you can go check out David Gilliver folks Leave a message here first though, if you like, and do come back next week. Well, this was a little comic I was sort of informally asked to do, and I’m not sure if it’s ever going to take off, or what, but here’s the first one anyway. Basically, the premise is that the strip focuses on tshirt vendors, Abilene (or just Abi), and Matt, (yes, Mattman, he’s modeled after you, in recognition of my first buyer (that I know of) who run a stall at a local craft market called Shirtheads. The idea was that I would seek out tshirt designs that I like, and feature them in the strip, and get a bit of background from the artist to go along with it, as well as post a link direct to the tee, etc. If anyone would like to see more, let me know, and I’ll try to make it a semi-regular thing! Keep bubbling over, folks! / Caanan.

Shirtheads - featuring ... caanan?

Monstar: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and all other anthropomorphic personifications, my name is Monstar and this is my friend Bunnee / from the hit webcomic aptly titled Monstar / Bunnee: I don’t know if you could describe it as a “hit” webcomic. Unless you’re referring to the one hit we get each day from my mum? / Monstar: Anyhoo…we’re here today because Caanan has injured his back and Shirtheads will be out of action for the next few weeks. So we took it / upon ourselves to step into the breach (of copyright) and take over the Shirtheads strip this week. / Bunnee: How did he injure his back? Did a Predator rip out his spine or did he throw it out “on the job” (wink, wink)? / Monstar: You can ask him yourself, because he’s our very special guest interviewee today. Ladies and gentleman a round of applause for Caanan Grall… Monstar: We all know that “Celadore” has been described as the most beautiful word in the English language by the guy who wrote “Lord of the Rings”… / Bunnee: You mean, Peter Jackson? / Monstar: Of course! So Caanan, what’s you’re favourite word and why? / Bunnee: Mine’s kumquat…it sounds like a swear and tastes great!! I like cool. Buzz words will come and go – neat-o, grouse, gnarly, whatever… but cool will always be cool. No-one knows why, and in that, is the essence of cool – it can’t be defined. Now random, that’s a word I hate. Thankfully, it is starting to fade as the word of the day but really – is anything random? When someone creates a comic with two spaceguys and a pet alien hamster with a fetish for leather – well, SOMEone came up with that. Don’t just go ‘Oh, that’s so random.’ It’s not. It’s the OPPOSITE of random. I also enjoy squishy, bubble and pants. And anything that rhymes with monkey. Monstar: If you had to be a monster for the rest of your life, would you be a Vampire, Zombie or Werewolf? / Bunnee: What about a vampiric were-zombie? It’d have to be a werewolf. Totally. I mean, for only one night a month you’re a raging beast and the rest of the time you’re normal. Some women have it harder than that. Bunnee: It’s my turn to answer a question, Tony Barber! Okay, Khan… / Monstar: It’s “Caanan” not Khan… / Bunnee: That’s what I said. Now, Cannon… / Monstar: CAANAN! / Bunnee: Whatever…so imagine this scenario….you’re trapped on a desert island (or perhaps even the Lost island) with William Shatner, Jesus Christ and William H. Macy….who would you eat first and why? Well, if I was on the Lost island, I’d eat Hurley – the taste is in the fat of the animal anyway. But if it had to be of those three, I’m gonna have to say William Shatner. Because Christ is too skinny (and possibly not even real), and William H Macy was in Pleasantville, one of my favourite movies ever, which makes him cool. (See? That word again!) Monstar: And now for something a little more hard hitting…what level of carbon emissions do you think Australia should be trying to implement by 2025? / Bunnee: Stop trying to act like an intellectual Monstar…you’re just trying to show off to all those “greenie hippies” that post their Save the World t-shirts on this site. You know who you are cough Yanmos cough I’m a little behind on what Oz’s emissions are at the moment, having been away for quite some time now, but… I think they should aim for zero. Aim high and land somewhere in the middle is always the way to go. That’s why you aim for the triple 20 square on a dartboard. If you’re lucky, you’ll still get the bullseye. Bunnee: Ooooh, I’ve got a question! I’ve got a question! / Monstar: Well ask it already! / Bunnee: So what’s your drawing process? How do you draw so well…did you sell your soul at some crossroad at midnight or what? / Monstar: I think what my little buddy means is what are your tools of the trade for drawing Shirtheads and how long does each strip take from start to finish? Well, for Shirtheads I use those awesome Canson comic strip boards they’ve just come out with. It’s not great paper, and ruins my pens, but they come pre-cut to the right size, with non-repro blue grid lines around the edges for marking out panels and lettering. They’re really handy. But the paper… Argh! The paper… Sigh. Anyway. Then I scan them in and colour them in Photoshop. I’m red/green/brown blue/purple pink/grey/whatever else colourblind like a lot of guys, so I’m trying to learn colour as a science. It will never be instinctual for me unfortunately. And then, if I’m running low on time (which is usually) I steal the backgrounds from previous strips. :oD Sometimes the hardest part of Shirtheads is the idea generation. I spend a long time looking through shirts that inspire an idea in me immediately. It can take a while, especially since that part is the most wavering. If I’m not in the mood, I’m never gonna come up with something funny. Not even if I wear a silly hat whilst thinking about it. I also don’t do roughs. Sometimes that means I end up with crappy looking strips that could have used a re-do, but then other times I’m in the zone, and it just falls out where it’s all meant to. I love those days. Monstar: Final question. If you could punch one person in the face without any legal repercussions, who would it be and why? / Bunnee: Just one person…man, that’s a hard question. Could I maybe line up four or five people and punch the first one and get a “coconut” head cracking conga line effect? / Monstar: sigh I’m really not a violent person, so even if we gathered a whole bunch of evil doers to get their heads punched in – you know, Bush, advertising executives, rappers who love to talk about slappin’ their bitches like it’s completely ok, etc. I’d still get someone else to chop their heads off and feed them to raccoons. I’m really not a violent person. And I’d like to say thanks to Jacen! Shirtheads - featuring Simon Sherry

This week’s blockbuster, widescreen, now in technicolour edition of Shirtheads features – dun dun DUN – The Killbots / So grab some popcorn, turn off your mobiles, and get your feet off the seats! do you do that at home?! (Yes sir) as we say ‘howdy’ to Simon Sherry / / ( Lord of the Aussie comickers’ Pulp Faction group ) Explain the process of Killbots. Where did they come from and how do you make them? The killbots series pretty much started as an experiment in Adobe Illustrator – I had stumbled on a couple of techniques in the process of working on some other pieces, and as is usually the case, I take that new discovery and get sidetracked! To be a little more specific, I tend to approach each bot in as freeform a method as possible, just laying down shapes (and sometimes components from previous bots) to see what comes of it. The best example of this would be KB 4 + 4.5 ‘Psiclops and CRABS’, which went through all manner of changes before the version you guys have seen. In fact, CRABS simply started off as kb 4’s jaw, and kind of sprouted from there. If you could build a robot, what would it be? What would it do? Aside from helping me conquer the world? Probably make a mean cheesecake,. Where do you find inspiration? Cartoons, comics (Mike Mignola, Sam Keith and Ted McKeever, in particular), the army of action figures populating my office, all manner of ‘found objects’ I stumble upon in my internet travels (particularly here on the Bubble), the many and varied cute and strange things my 23-month-old daughter does… I try to make a point of soaking my brain as much as possible with stimulus from the world around me, and let it spew out through my drawing arm in a random fashion. So far it’s worked out pretty well for me :) What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? Probably the ‘Fantasy Island’ shirt I picked up for 10 bucks at Dimmeys in Richmond many years ago. It had a great pic of tattoo on it and the airplane from the show on the back. If you’ve never heard of the show, Google it – you won’t be dissapointed ;) What did you want to be when you were 6 years old? A paleontologist – although secretly I wanted to be some sort of weird mix of Doctor Who and He-Man. What took up most of your time growing up? Drawing, reading, Dungeons & Dragons – all the typical nerdlinger activities. Is there anything you’ve ever found vastly amusing no-one else has? Probably the aforementioned Fantasy Island t-shirt and accompanying ‘Tattoo on my chest’ jokes that came with it – there’s a reason that that particular shirt was plentiful in a store like Dimmeys. What’s the worst thing the internet has to offer? Endless distraction… and really, really bad YouTube videos. What have you been proud of most thus far in your life? My lovely and amazing children. My son Samuel was stillborn in 2004, and while I’ve not got to watch him grow, his memory still inspires and drives me to make the most out of life. My daughter, Olivia, who is an unstoppable juggernaut of cuteness, and our little WIP, soon to be released into the big, wide world. I know it sounds sappy, but truth be told, there’s nothing else that I could acheive that’s going to top them. How does the world end? Well, after that robot of mine whips up an awesome baked chocolate cheesecake, the onslaught BEGINS! Thanks Simon! Shirtheads - featuring Liesl Yvette Wilson
by caananIt’s not easy to pull off ‘sweet but sinister’... / Unless you’re Liesl Yvette Wilson that is….
It’s not easy to pull off ‘sweet but sinister’... / Unless you’re Liesl Yvette Wilson that is. ;o) / This shirt in particular, and this one / / is what inspired me this week, but also the general scampiness of Liesl’s Tullulah. break out your evil grins folks, and smile with me ;o) So, what can you tell us about Tullulah? Is she based on anyone? What’s the story? What are the books you’re working on and when/where can we see them? Hmmmmm….Well as so often is the case, I don’t know where Tullulah came from, she kinda just showed up one day…she didn’t even bring any treats with her, not even a jar of Marmite, Tulluala’s really rude that way…at least Paddington brought his own suitcase. But no, she just landed on me…I’ve had to look after her ever since and it hasn’t been easy, cos she is such a little freak. Tullulah is a little bit me, a little bit my niece. I wrote a kid’s story called “Around the Corner and on the Left”, it was a quirky little piece about a kid that lived in a creepy house and was always fleeing from spooky things. My niece who was about five at the time, posed for the illustrations. She had her hair in bunches and it looked really cute. Much later when I was just tinkering around, with a simple character design for a grown-up fairy story, I worked from the basic illos of my niece…. And suddenly ‘T’ appeared. / There are quite a few stories featuring Tullulah, which is why she is so arrogant! The first to be printed is more for grandma and kiddies, unfortunately for all you ghouls out there. It is called a balloon and a bear. Printing is being organised and hopefully by the time my website is up and running, they will be ready to go! What were some of your favourite kids books growing up, and now? Wow, I have sooooo many fav books. As a very little kid I liked “Bread and Jam for Francis” and I have no idea who wrote that! I also loved Maurice Sendak ( Where the Wild Things Are.) Anything with beautiful illustrations, Richard Scarey etc. When I could read properly I loved “The Famous Five” and I still do…all that adventure and running unsupervised around the moors chased by circus people and jewel thieves, how could you not like it? What really influenced me was Alan Garner (“The Owl Service”,”Elidor”, “Red Shift”) I loved how weird it was and how not everything made sense, leaving you going “Hmmmmm, what was that about?”. What prompted the move from Aus to the UK? What are the differences? I moved here from Oz about five years ago…I had always wanted to try living in the UK and although it was really difficult, I’m glad that I have. It is a huge community of artistic people and it seems like everyone is an actor, writer, poet, singer. Amazing! I had sold work pretty consistently in Australia but it was usually wildlife photorealistic stuff and I couldn’t seem to break out of that with any real success, so I thought a move might just do that. If we took two cute furry animals, and cross bred them, which ones would they be, and what would we end up with? Well my absolute favourite animal is a ring-tailed lemur and I also love gliders, probably flying foxes would be the fav (yes I know they smell but so would you if you had to pee whilst hanging upside down! There is a bit of a design flaw there…) So I guess my little animal would be a lemur that could fly….how completely cool! How did you find the bubble? What made you join and stick around? Do you know what? I can’t remember how I found Red Bubble, I think I was just looking for artists and writer’s communities…I really don’t remember… What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? HmmmI don’t know about the fav shirt….I did have one that had a pig on it and it said…”Piggy Wiggy – Don’t eat me I’m a friendly animal!” I used to wear that to BBQs. What did you want to be when you were 6 years old? When I was six I wanted to be a writer…or a gymnastics instructor… What are you most proud of? I don’t know what I’m most proud of…I don’t really think that way…If I had to pick something I would say that I don’t give up easily. What are your minor and major goals right now? My major goals would be to sell Tullulah books online, and prove it can be done! I would love to work at my art and writing full time, but I am realistic about the possibilities of that – still every one needs a dream to motivate them! What do you think the world would be like if children were running things instead of the politicians? It depends how old the kids are…if they were all three year olds the world would be one big Baskin and Robbins! Better go buy some shares in sprinkles. Thanks Liesl! Don’t forget to come back next week, folks, for our next victim, but in the meantime, here’s some more art Liesl graciously supplied, just ‘cos I think it’s aces! :oD Caanan. Shirtheads - featuring Superteam: Non-Stop

And we’re back! With interview number 20, no less! A minor milestone. And what better way to celebrate, than with the aptly named / Superteam: Non-Stop / Whose Wrestle Cat stole the hearts of hundreds in this year’s Comikaze 24 hour challenge. / Read the comic here Where did Wrestle Cat come from? Where is he going? He follows the lead of my favourite superheroic animals such as Beppo the / Superchimp and Ace the Bat-Hound from back in the day. I love the idea of Batman putting a mask on a dog and thinking it is a good idea. Fiasco Bombasco had the same idea with his cat due to his love of wrestiling plus of course his taking so many punches to the head. Fiasco’s dream is for Wrestle Cat to become World Wrestling Champ (pets division). This dream is at odds with Wrestle Cat’s own ambitions of a life full of sleeping, eating and playing with rolled up plastic bags (he likes the sound they make against his paws). If you could have a knock-down drag out wrestle with someone, who would it be? I would only wrestle purely for entertainment so I would choose Andre the Giant. Modern professional wrestling is a bit too homoerotic for me to watch comfortably. Instead of characters like George “The Animal” Steele, Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Iron Shiek it’s all oiled down buff pretty men. Homoerotic sports definitely have their place but that place is Football. / A cage match between a bearded pot-bellied cartoonist and the reanimated corpse of Andre the Giant is what we need to have wrestling be interesting again. Did you know Andre the Giant never stopped growing until he died? Imagine if he is still growing! What inspired you throughout your young life? What are the major tentpole / moments, turning points, or influences, etc. that have made you who you are today? The earliest turning point I can remember is reading the tiny comic that came with the Super Powers Green Lantern toy I got from Kmart when I was seven years old. It was the first comic I remember reading and it blew my mind that you could tell a story with so many drawings and ended up spending a lot of time doing just that at home with the encouragement of my older brothers. A few years back I met David Dellafiora (aka Field Study) and Glen Smith (aka nofrillsart) through a few art projects and programs and they were instrumental in me getting into action and actually producing and selling my art and comics with their guidance. And relatively recently, participating in the Daily Grind Iron Man Challenge had a huge amount of influence on my work. Drawing and posting comics online daily and getting feedback was fantastic while it lasted and really made me push myself and see what I can do. It was so encouraging being amongst so many talented cartoonists who ended up being my friends. What’s awesome about comics? Why do you make them? Comics were such a large part of my upbringing and are still such a part of my life still that it still suprises me when others don’t share that bond. For me they are my main source of entertainment and inspiration well above television, movies and books. It only makes sense to me that if you love something so much that you want to be a part of it and give something back. What isn’t awesome about comics? It’s the easiest form of visual storytelling out there. How would you survive a zombie invasion? I think my survival would solely depend on information I have retained from zombie comics and films. Firstly, I would collect my local loved ones and head for the nearest pub. Where does a guy even get guns from in real life? I’m sure one of my friends would know. I bet my dad could make some kick arse weapons! Also, I live in the town of Lara, Victoria. The zombie invasion could have started weeks ago and I wouldn’t have noticed. What are some of the coolest things that have inspired you this year thus far? I went to Supanova Perth along with my fellow Monster and Robot members Edward J. Grug III and Jessica McLeod and I had the hugest sensory overload ever. I saw children dressed as superheroes at Supernova, saw Galapogas Tortoises getting fed at the zoo and got to touch a tiny shark and some rays. The whole time just inspired a need to create again and I’m still riding that high. Also, they have totally different icecreams over there! They have Drumsticks but they call them ‘Trumpets’. And remember Memphis Meltdowns? They have them but in different flavours! Plus I drank a bottle of Chilli Cola! What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? I had a bright stripey cross colour tshirt which I had for over ten years and only just recently retired and it’s now the cover for a couch cusion in the garage. It looked kinda like what Ernie from Bert and Ernie wears. My current favourites are my bright green TK Longmire shirt with an octopus on it (looking it up I see it’s no longer available) and my red longsleeve Bandit Ghost shirt from my own redbubble store (it makes me feel kinda superheroic). What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever laughed the longest and/or hardest at? The first thing that comes to mind is the idea of a theme wedding where the couple get married on toilets. To me it’s the ultimate extravagance and if it doesn’t exist somewhere already then surely it will within the next few years. If you could take a musical outfit and turn them into a gang of superheroes, who would you choose? Who would they become? The Beastie Boys! They would be superheroes in the vein of Japanese ultra science heroes like Jet Jaguar or Ultraman as they were in the Intergalactic video and in their down time they would be tuxedo wearing smooth movers like in the Sure Shot video. So, it’s five years from now. What’s been going on? We are sipping cocktails by a pool on the moon! I build myself a penthouse / apartment out of Golden Girls DVDs shortly after my powers manifested. I got contacted by Prime Minister Emdur and was appointed Minister for Adventure, leading to many excursions to the microscopic planet full of Werewolves and Draculas. Also, I own a new type of pet. It is like an elephant but it fits in the palm of your hand. Damn. Now I want one of those too! And can we get a tshirt comp going for the best ‘Emdur for PM’ tshirt? ;oP Thanks Ive! And tune in next week, folks, as we get back to our regularly scheduled weekly updates! Who will it be? Even I don’t know. Oops. There’s something to add to the list for tomorrow… :o[]

Shirtheads - featuring animo
by caananThis week’s tshirt that caught my attention !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/clothing/bodycolor:babyblue/cropped/size:small/style:me…
This week’s tshirt that caught my attention is by animo So let’s all say ‘hello’ to animo, as she takes her meds… ;o) This tshirt was inspired by a post in one of the forums here – this post, actually Have you ever had an imaginary friend? Do you have one now? No, but my sister had enough for the both of us. She still has one now (in her mid-thirties) which she sends to me when he’s been naughty and lets me know via SMS of his impending arrival. While visiting he would hide himself in the tumble-drier and on a few occasions [because he was not in my imagination, but my sister’s] I didn’t realise and threw in a load of wet socks on warm for half an hour. Luckily imaginary vomit comes off with a light shake. How did you find the bubble? What made you stick around? Actually, I found the Bubble in May 2007 while doing some research with a Melbourne gallery owner for a business idea we had promoting Australian art photographers online – what we had in mind was already being done ;-) I stick around because it’s a creative treasure trove, full of interesting and inspiring peoples (some of you have become offline friends as well) What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? That’s a hard one – there are so many great tees. At the moment my fave tee is a screen-printed version of the original ‘Hell’ design by Lucan Industries which curiously enough I found in an opp shop. When do you stop watching? While a man is having his head hacked off by a homicidal maniac on a greyhound bus in Canada… oh gawd. Or when your next door neighbour is f@#king his dog, you shouldn’t be watching, you should be ringing the RSPCA!!! If you could pull a ‘freaky friday’ mind swap on two people, who would you choose? Germaine Greer and Paris Hilton. What would happen? You do the sums. What did you want to be when you were 12? I wanted to be an archaeologist – while most of my friends had pictures of cute guys out of Dolly magazine plastered all over their bedrooms, I had dinosaur posters and those 3D plywood dinosaur skeletons that were so popular in the 80s. Enough said. Who are you heroes right now? Wonder Woman, because she is a formidable female role model… that and she lets me borrow her invisible plane. Too cool. What do you better than anybody else? Animo’s Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat Casserole Surprise… (between you and me Caanan, the surprise is there’s no Tuna in it!) Critically Endangered… because they’re so tasty. If you could pass a law today, to make the world a better place, what would it be? I would make it compulsory for everyone to study philosophy and learn how to think, and about the way they think. The idea being to enable people to live consciously, employ critical thinking skills to look beyond themselves, their possessions, their religion, their culture, their country and think about how what they do impacts on others, the world and the future. I see philosophy as a kind of vaccine against ignorance. If you could jump into the world of any book, which would it be? The Wind in the Willows, to meet Ratty, Mole and Mr Badger and mess about in boats on the river and I’d confiscate Mr Toad’s car keys because amphibians really shouldn’t drive ; ) Thanks Naomi! Don’t forget to bring back some pate de frais gras, thanks ;o) See ya next week, folks! Caanan.

For Bill Hicks to come back from the dead and start a bar in my home town What did you want to be when you were 12 years old? Artist! a t-shirt sales person :P, getting my Half Elf a + 37 sword of Everything oh and a lego designer… that would be PHAT! (do people actually say that?!) What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? ooooooh I love being in the moment… i am wearing a completely black T…so I will say that… when i am rich i will start buying up RB shirts exclusively and then it will get so hard to choose because i love nearly all of em (except the ones with bad font choices…tisk tisk Is there anyone you suspect of being actually an alien? I stuck around because of the community you guys / gals are MASSIVE What can you do offline, but not online? winks… If you could rid this world of one person, who would it be? What would be the repercussions? The man who says we must have a day job and keep our creative side a pastime hobby…. The repercussions would be a universal acceptance of all races and world peace…oh and gnarley solar-powered animated t-shirts Why is New Zealand better than Australia? I used to be all “Yeah bitches you got Howard all up in you! lol” now that he is gone I am thinking The O Z is looking mighty nice… here GDers get shite pay and we basically have to beg for work… in places like Perth and ‘Melbourne Town’ the wages are great and it seems GDers are actually in demand…I would have to say NZ has a ‘feel’ to it that is just so great…(read as reggae, dub, guitar around a fire, setting of smoke alarms) it would be nice to rock on back here after a few years of jet setting around… Demo is losing his job, folks. Shirtheads - featuring Johdie

Check your pinky fingers, folks, and let’s see how they stack up against the boundless talents of this week’s Shirthead, Johdie / This week featuring several different shirts actually within the strip, / / but inspired by this one… / What does music mean to you? Music and art go hand in hand for me, I can’t have one without the other. I get plenty of ideas from music. My art’s a bit mixed up.. my personality is a bit mixed up.. and my taste in music is all over the place. I’ve always disliked anything typical. When I was a kid my favourite song was Joy to the World from the Forest Gump soundtrack.. I just couldn’t get into the Spice Girls. If you could live in any period of history, which would it be? I like things from each recent decade. People didn’t whinge and kids weren’t spoilt rotten in the 40’s. People in the 50’s had great hair. My mother says I should have been from an era where people were passionate about the world but personal hygiene is more important to me. The 80’s seemed crazy, I think it would suit me. I like 80’s music, it makes me laugh.. 80’s comedy aswell. I guess that doesn’t really answer anything. What fascinates you? Well right now what is fascinating me.. or more like distracting me.. is a praying mantis on my window giving me evils. I forgot what I was going to say. It’s really making me uncomfortable. Is there anything you’ve ever found highly amusing that no-one else has? I laugh at my own jokes. Or more so I laugh at other people’s reaction to my jokes, when they’re crude or politically incorrect of just plain wrong. They’re always pretty blunt and unexpected. Other than that I always laugh at gorey things in movies.. which I suppose plenty of people do. Maybe I go a bit far by rewinding something like.. someone being decaptitated and watching it again in slow motion. What’s the craziest dream you’ve ever had? I don’t remember many dreams. Once upon a time I used to dream about chickens. I had one dream where I was on the swing and accidently kicked a passing chicken in the head. A whole gang of them then attacked me. I blame my parents for telling me that if I wore thongs down the back the chooks would think my toes were worms and eat them. It freaked me. What’s your most favourite tshirt you’ve ever worn? I can’t remember ever being that attached to clothing (that might change if I get some tees from here). I found a ‘Dinosaurs’ shirt I used to love when I was about 4 or 5. Out of boredom and curiousity (not a female thing).. I put it on. I was amazed I managed, but then.. I had to get it off again. It got stuck around my head and arms and I felt.. well.. just a little bit silly… What do people need more of? Tolerance. I say that because I just came off my learner’s licence. But that’s me being a super huge hypocrite. I can’t stand anyone. I go to the shopping centre and get stuck behind a bunch of people walking too slow, screaming at their overweight children and I can’t help but pretend to stab them like in Psycho. It doesn’t help that I have that as my ringtone at the moment. I guess I’m the one that needs more tolerance, everyone else needs more common sense. Do aliens exist? I never believed anything else existed.. God, Santa, the Tooth Fairy.. I might as well believe aliens do. So many people have seen weird crap. Even people I know, who weren’t crazy or drunk. It would explain a lot. I would just like them not to be those skinny aliens with huge heads and eyes. I hope they’re more comical.. and colourful.. and that they’re not really into probing. Flash forward 20 years… taking a look back on your life, what are the highlights? When Caanan asked me a bunch of weird questions? When I won the lotto? I don’t know. I’m hoping my life starts getting exciting real soon. But I suppose I’d just be dull and realistic and hope to get a half decent job doing something I enjoyed, travel overseas at least once, get married and.. the main one.. not turn out like my mother. How did you find redbubble? And what makes you stick around? It was recommended to me for my art, but I signed up after seeing the shirts. There’s some pretty kickarse stuff.. and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it. I’m finding I enjoy it more than anything else at the moment, even though I’m just starting out and feel I have a long way to go. I think Redbubble has personality.. and there’s plenty of nutters to keep me entertained. I’ll stick around so long as I can find work I like everytime I’m here. Thanks Johdie! And come back next week folks, for another bubbler. Caanan. Shirtheads - featuring bahgoesthesheep
by caananIt’s bahgoesthesheep / !http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/users/size:135×135/view:avatar…
It’s bahgoesthesheep / Yes, sheep do go bah, but… / turns out they also have LOTS more to say… And who could resist the cool cool allure of doing a comic strip about a zombie stuffed bunny army? In fact, I could have done quite a few. Maybe a whole 24 page book. :o) If Jocelyn’s happy with it, I may post another one of my ideas but as a tshirt somewhere down the line if I can find the time. Anyway, I’ve bleated enough. Here’s the real deal. How does one overcome an attack from a zombie stuffed bunny army? Lock and LOAD!! Maybe hope like hell you’re not one of the poor suckas that die, or turn into a zombie thing. Or just develop crazy zombie fighting prowess(xD). Honestly though, everyone would probably die. or want to. Zombie bunnies no joke, super fast super vicious, and one bite turns you into a deformed flesh lovin bunny! Why are zombies so cool? hahhah thats a good question, i don’t really know why humans like zombies. But i fancy them because, the whole concept is totallly crazy! dead walking flesh eating monster humans. Gore to the max. Or maybe i just secretly want to feast on human flesh. crazy…. yes. crazy cool…hell yes. Can you give us some explanation of your creative process? From idea to finished design? At anyone times i’m at least working on 3 diff designs, so my creative process is quite jumbled. I really don’t have one set way to channel creativeness, mostly i just going with the flow. Doodling, thats always a where i start. alot of my designs start off as doodles on things that i probably shouldn’t be doodling on, but you never know when inspiration will strike, so whatever :). Other doodle times are brainstorming days, when i have these days i normally come up with hmmm anywhere from 10 to 20 new design concepts/whatever concepts. but i only use the best ones…..probably gets cut to 3-4-5…. throw all the other ones into later folder, saved for an art block time. then its just scanned in illustrator/photoshop colored vectored, blah blah, sometimes i do traditional/digital mixed. T’s always perfected in illustrator, one of those designs may change several times once i get down and funky in illustrator. hahah and then to redbubble c: What super power would you want most, and how would you use it? hhmmmm flight i think, i just like the idea of zipping around in the clouds, pulling elaborate pranks, generally reeking havoc whenever possible. xD the possibilities are endless. I would probably poop on a bird too, for fun. hahah i would sooo mess with pilots and stuff, airplanes, helicopters, anything that flys. Maybe even snatch a kite or too. i just want to see how other people react to a flying human x3 What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? hmm i don’t think i’ve ever had a favourite shirt……hmmmm maybe probably my Smoking kills shirt. I love it so much cuz i smoke, and i like to be funny xD. Who are your heroes? Why? Wonder woman? maybe Batman? ActualIy try not to have heroes, because no such infalliable entities exsist. A little harsh maybe, but no one can help you like yourself. What kind of art do you like? i like all kinds of art, theres no real one style or one artist in particular that i would say is my favorite. I am inspired by art of all kinds, and sometimes (of course) try to take certain elements from pieces i am inspired by (or just fancy), and apply them to my own creations. Sadly specific artist blahblah i am unable to give you :( i don’t really have much to babble on about this subject, i hope that doesn’t make me dumb. If you could go back to visit your 12 year old self, what would you tell her and why? holy hell you’re in for a bumpy ride! just don’t take yourself to seriously, don’t talk too much and never talk to jenna neckonchuk!! xD But seriously now, i don’t think i would tell her a thing, i like the way im turning out and i wouldn’t want to change a thing. What are some things you’ve never said out loud before but constantly think? You can share with us now. It’s ok. No-one reads these… :oP I READ THIS!, i do i love shirtheads, woot woot! ummmmmmmmm / wow thats bad / what the hell is my dog doing / i looove the way candles smell, sooo much, well good candles. i could sniff around a candle store all day :D. Nothing makes me happier / i evesdrop to alot, more than i should. Its not really my fault though, people just be happen to be talking about fun stuff then i walk by :D / why in the hell do i do this / i procrastinate sooo much, im suprised i even got this jazz done on time. / i enjoy knitting maybe a little too much / what would an airplane pilot do if he/she saw a flying human? / i do not give a shit about grammer, can’t help it. ya typography is one thing….internet shiz another xD sry i know all you grammer stickers are gonna hate me but just know i don’t hate you. ;) Ultimate fantasy? hmmmmmmmm i want to be the asshole in a zombie movie that hufffs and puffs and then turns into a zombie, or you know theres always that person in the movie who is killed off into a zombie pretty quick normally comes back maybe kills a couple of the characters piss some people off, maybe killed. basically what im saying is, i wanna be a zombie xD Thanks Jocelyn! I’m glad you got this jazz done on time See ya next week folks. LilyM lurks around corners… / / ...open arms are her weapon of choice. I won’t even begin to list the people who could follow in such soft, ready footsteps. Hugged by a Ninja! / > Assuming a world without violence, and assassinations, what else would ninjas be good for? Due to their overwhelming awesomeness there is probably nothing a ninja couldn’t do. But I believe firstly they would finally make peace with the Pirates and together they would open a chain of highly successful clothing shops called “ARRRH You Being Severed”. The ninja sales assistant appears next to you, silent and deadly, causing you to mess yourself and immediately need new pants. Who needs a big old hug right now? I don’t think there is anyone who wouldn’t like (ok need) a big old hug right now. Everyone who reads this should hug the nearest person or the next person they see. Preferably taking them by surprise. This will make the world happier and little more confused. Do it…you know you want to…NINJA HUUUUUG! What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? There are so many wonderful creative and witty shirts on RedBubble I couldn’t pick a favorite. It is both upsetting (damn I wish I thought of that!) and inspiring how talented these people are. When have you laughed the hardest? What’s so funny? I can’t remember anything specific. I laugh at most things. Sometimes til I cry or start hyperventilating. A few favorites are: unexpected funny noises, people falling down, and sudden and unexplained outburst of shouting. Where does your art come from? Late at night when I am trying to get to sleep they come in groups slamming into my brain and demand to be made then and there. I promise them I will make them as soon as I get a spare moment and that I will not forget about them. Lots of ideas are still waiting. Everyday inspires more. Where would you like your art to go? Everywhere. I have ideas for furniture, toys, packaging, fashion, animations and games. And there are so many more things I would like to try. For the moment I’m focusing on my illustration. What is the greatest cold hard fact example of evolution? I’m pretty sure evolution isn’t cold and hard it’s probably more mushy and warm…like a nice stew. I think the best example is that there is stuff still around. If things couldn’t adapt they wouldn’t be here. Ideas, technology, life, everything evolves. If it doesn’t change it gets left behind. What did you want to be when you were ten years old? Probably a werewolf or another creature that didn’t have to go to school. What did I want to be when I grew up when I was 10? A comic book artist and I would still like to be one. If you were asked to put together a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what would you put in it? Lets see: 1 Mini Keg, 2 Bags of chips, Lots of Assorted Candy, Confetti, Ridiculously Oversized and Elaborate Pirate Hats, Plastic Cups, Balloons, 6 Folding Chairs, and a tiny computer with every funny cat video ever put on YouTube. Cause you’ve just found and dug up a capsule that’s been in the ground for 100 years and you’re damn well gonna wanna celebrate! You’ve just been made leader of the free world. How might your acceptance speech go? MWAHAHAHAHAHAH!... now that I got that out of the way… Thank you for this honor; it will be my privilege to guide you all on the path of not doing stupid stuff and the brighter future for all…blah blah blah… FreeWorld…. Prosperous times… sure are a lot of you out there…oh what the hell! Party at my house! Thanks Lily! And she’s new folks, so let’s all give her a suitably redbubbly welcome! And come back next week, folks, for more shirty fun. Hello, and welcome to the first Pulp Faction Profile. The aim of this journal is to help spotlight some of the stellar talent on display in the Pulp Faction: Comics and Sequential Art group. First cab off the rank is the whimsical stylings of Caanan… Caanan Occupation: Illustrator – storyboards and kid’s books, mainly Secret Occupation: Comic Strip Artist Hometown: Ballarat, Vic Australia Currently Residing: Toronto, ON. Canadia. Influences: / I grew up on Peanuts, Archie comics, and the old Gladstone Disney comics – Carl Barks, Don Rosa, etc. They remain my strongest influences, but as I got older – as a teenager, I was a big fan of Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, etc, then threw that all away. And after that, took in animated films and all the behind the scenes concept art and storyboarding that went into them, Calvin & Hobbes, Zits, Mutts, Bone, Liberty Meadows and the work of Doug TenNapel. Current projects: / Apart from the advertising storyboarding which keeps me fed, clothed and sheltered, I work on my comic strips, The Middle Ages, which comes out bi-monthly from Local Act Comics, about a bunch of 12 year olds, and Squirrels and Pigeons, which I hope to break into a newspaper somewhere, somehow. It’s about a park janitor who can talk to the squirrels and pigeons there, so it’s kinda nutty, but it’s also more about how, because he has a kind of lowly job, he’s as largely ignored by our increasingly self-obsessed society as the animals are. It might sound cynical, but with cartoons you almost have to be. I also have about twenty other kids book/comic ideas all at various stages of development that I tinker with on and off. I sometimes think I’d make a better writer, but I’m a massive control freak and have the obsessive need to hold on to these stories so I can draw them myself one day. And lastly, check out my redbubble shirts. I try and make t-shirts that are kind of nerdy and for your inner child, because if you put that kind of thing on your chest, I’d hope that other like-minded people will respond to it, conversations will start up, and people will find, deep down, that their inner child isn’t as dead as they thought. linkage: / Occasional Comics Disorder – has latest strips and news as it comes. caanan.net – My old site with various strips. Never completed, as I left the country before I could finish it, but still, there’s some laughs to be had there. Local Act Comics – so people can find out where to purchase The Middle Ages. Oh, as well as Junk, (written by Dave Cunning, drawn by Me) and my 24 hour comics double shot – Gypsy and the Astronaut (2006 winner) and Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow (2007 – 16pg category – winner). I also contributed to the Presents anthology, issues 2 and 3.

Pulp Faction Profile: Rhys McDonald
by Simon SherryHello and welcome to the latest Pulp Faction Profile, spotlighting the talent in the Pulp Faction: Comics and Sequential Art...
Hello and welcome to the latest Pulp Faction Profile, spotlighting the talent in the Pulp Faction: Comics and Sequential Art group here on the Bubble. Our next artist is one Rhys McDonald, a NSW-based illustrator with a folio full to the brim with robots, wrestlers, bloodnuts and pin-up girls. So, without any further ado, we give you… Rhys McDonald Occupation: illustrator – editorials mostly Secret Occupation: Astronaut (kind of still working on that one) Hometown: Sydney, NSW Australia Currently Residing: Shoal Bay, NSW Australia. Influences: / I never really thought about comics until my late teens and picked up Jim Mahfood’s 40oz comics and had a lightbulb type moment in the comic book shop and it grew from there (Eightball was my other lightbulb moment). Now I’m a big fan of Stephen Silver, Jon Adams and Josh Howard. Writing wise Jon Adams, and Howard again, it’ll sound cheesy but my oldest and best friend “Tom”:http://fivethumbsdown.blogspot.com/ is a big influence on me, Mike Mignola as well. I’m pretty much influenced by something if it’s fun or funny or absurdly skewed. That’s what I’m into. Current projects: / The Plastic Age – The chance for me to, occasionally express something which would often be easier done with a straight blog. Other times just an excuse to make dick and fart jokes, or more often than not, to rag on someone. The comic I’ve had people say they like the most, ends with aged versions of the characters pooping their pants. This amuses, and upsets me. / My main project at the moment is trying secure more work, like an insatiable hunger I desire more delicious jobs at various magazines and other outlets. If anyone is interested, write me (cheap and nasty plugs rule) / There’s also the heavy amount of cheesecake illustrations I’ve been doing lately. I’m not sure what these are all building too but I’m really enjoying them. Then there are my new books, released earlier this month. (details right here) linkage: / The Plastic Age – general updates and comics, plenty of art, mini comics available from there also (new books will be available there also) / Art Blog – general drawings and other bits and pieces, not updated as much as TPA is, still meaty though. / Redbubble page – If you want to purchase something, get it from here. I’m on the ‘bub a fair bit these days and something is always getting ready to be added Previous Profiles: / Profile 1: Caanan / Profile 2: David J Cunning

Hello and welcome to the second Pulp Faction Profile, where we aim to spotlight the amazing talent coming out of the Aus. independant comic scene and beyond. Our second factioneer is an oz comics dynamo – not content merely to produce and promote his own work, David has started what could arguably be one of the most prolific publishers of local content in recent memory through the formation of Local Act Comics. So, without any further ado… David J Cunning Occupation: Business Manager Secret Occupation: Local Act Comics Director, comic artist and writer Hometown: East Ringwood, Vic Australia Currently Residing: Bayswater, Vic Australia. Influences: / I grew up on Peanuts, Wizard of Id, Andy Capp, Garfield, Dick Tracy and the old Gladstone Disney comics. From there it was Spiderman, Batman, Sin City, Hellspawn, Hellboy and Hellblazer (what’s with all the HELL :-P). My strongest influences would have to be Kelly Jones (Batman), Frank Miller (Sin City), Mike Mingola (Hellboy) and Marcelo Frusin (Hellblazer and Loveless). Current projects: / Running Local Act Comics, which is one of the biggest comic publishers in Australia. We organise production and distribution of Aussie comics on behalf of their creators. This includes attending conventions, keeping the website up to date and shipping catalogues out to stores across the country. On top of that I’m working as the artist on the horror series Down Under and the fantasy series Strange Dreams (both the webcomic and the miniseries). Once I manage to clear the decks again I’ll be looking at getting back into my western series Billy Joe Tequila. I also co-ordinate the LAC Presents… Anthology which comes out 2-3 times a year. I’m a bit of a redbubble addict so I often find myself knocking up new tee shirt designs when I should be doing other things…Its hard to cut back when its so much fun. linkage: / Local Act Comics – Its my Aussie comic baby. Representing loads of Aussie creators is a blast. Strange Dreams, the webcomic Previous Profilies: / Profile 1: Caanan

I was planning on doing this every Friday but seeing as I’ve been having more trouble than I can encapsulate with my website I decided to invest a little time here instead (which isn’t very hard) so here we go, I’ll put another one on friday, but I guess it won’t matter if one is up early right? Yeah I’m just going to have to prattle on now, and take up some space because I have lines to fill….turns out I have a shitty ISP, basically Soul are screwing up somewhere and not only not taking blame but seemingly ignoring the entire issue altogether and hoping it resolves itself. I love the internet. It was hot today. You seen those weather icon’s they got on macs? I’m impressed, easily obviously.

I was, like Caanan, informally asked to do a little comic every week, and seeing as I like comics as much as the next geek I’m happy to make this a weekly thing, if it takes off and people decide they’d like to see more. The idea was to keep it pretty similar to my webcomic and keep it pretty irrelevant. This comic was the result of a conversation I had about guns that fired sundries, and, would a kebab shot out of a gun explode in mid air. It was decided that it would If anyone wants to see more, let me know, as usual any feedback is appreciated / Just one thing, I’m currently having major server troubles with my site, so I can’t actually see the image below, if the end is getting cut off or anything, just let me know and I’ll move it down more /blind Cheers peoples! / Rhys-

Well, we did it again. Tom and myself took it upon ourselves to raise awareness (I’ll reframe from saying pointing the finger) at some of the things we’ve noticed and observed. There are some things I know we both dislike, things like cyanide and happiness for example, is our equivalent of chinese water torture (or listening to Brendan Nelson singing) there’s got to be a reason behind it or its not funny. absurd and random are two very different things and there’s humour in absurdity. Oh yeah, and as I’ve already stated before, if something is crudely drawn on purpose or is intentionally made badly I’m instantly turned off it, that type of art/work/comic/etc holds little interest for me, call me picky but it doesn’t hurt to try a little Comments?

To say there are a lot of shirts on RedBubble would be somewhat of an understatement. I guess only the admins know how many new ones are uploaded each day. In amongst the delightful designs and dire dross however, I feel there are quite a few brilliant shirts that are missed, ignored or sometimes forgotten. The idea of this semi-regular journal then is to highlight a shirt you may not have seen, may not have known about or perhaps completely forgotten about. Welcome to From The Back Of The Closet. First off the bat is Wintoons by Naefox A brilliant illustration for a cartoon series that doesn’t exist (but should!) based on the hit TV Show ‘Supernatural’. I know I would definitely be watching this. If there are any TV execs out there – take note! (Oh, and give Naefox a lot of money for the idea of course). How cool would the action figures be?! / I asked Naefox for a few words about the shirt: A Saturday morning cartoon AU (alternate universe) where the original canon or concept is only a place to start (and there is always a dog). / Mary Winchester is alive in this version, mostly due to an interview where Samantha Smith talked about her character and how much she’d have loved to have played her as a hunter in a big leather jacket. / I was inspired by the Batman Animated designers style (Bruce Timm). His work is deceptively hard to mimic, all slight curves and straight lines. / I think the Monster Of The Week plot structure would suit a ‘toon show. Thanx to Naefox for letting me showcase their shirt. Stay tuned for more From The Back Of The Closet! Ross
