The Carousel
by Carolyn TurnerWhen I was young / And times were new / To the fair I used to go. / To sit upon the carousel / Such courage would I show…
I wrote this poem during a church retreat in college. For most of my life in the church I seemed to constantly be in a state of “on the cusp” of different social groups, but I never could find a specific group that I felt like I could really identify myself with. This was becoming more and more clear to me during this particular retreat, and in a moment of much needed solitude sitting on a log in the nearby forest, I began to formulate the first stanza of this poem. / As I wrote, the words flowed effortlessly, and in a 2 hour period that felt more like 2 minutes, this poem helped me to reconcile my insecure feelings of “not belonging”, and helped me to realize that what I really needed to embrace was myself. Religion is something that happens within your heart, and is solely about your personal relationship with God. Once I realized that I was finally able to let ago of years of hard feelings and heartbreak over wasted efforts to be someone that I just could not be.
