  • Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.

Illustration of a carnival ride for children. From a series “SUNSET ON THE SMALL TOWN CARNIVAL”. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible i try to document this vanishing icon of the Twentieth Century American landscape. I used PhotoShop, then Illustrator, then back to PhotoShop, and finally back to Illustrator to create a complicated vector with a reasonable file size. Vectors are cool because they can be blown up to any size without losing resolution— there’s no pixelization in a vector.

  • Vector illustration of two girls playing dart balloon gane at a carnival. From a series “SUNSET ON THE SMALL TOWN CARNIVAL”. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible i try to document this vanishing icon of the Twentieth Century American landscape The image was shot in 2004 just after I got my first DSLR. It was my first attempt at night photography. I was using ambient light with a flash fill. I took the flash off the camera and pointed it in different directions trying to use the light, but make the shadows more natural. In post production I used a combination of drawing and tracing tools. I don’t have model releases, so I redrew the characters to render them unrecognizable. In post production I first created the illustration as a vector in AI. Next I rasterized the illustration in PS at 300dpi which significantly reduced the file size but completely retained the look. I reopened the PS 300dpi back in AI and saved it as a vector again so it could be blown up to any size and not lose resolution.

  • Carnival midway at twilight with concession stands. From a series “SUNSET ON THE SMALL TOWN CARNIVAL”. The rise of mega-parks and the high cost of liability insurance have contributed to the demise of small town carnivals which are rapidly disappearing. ^^; This is a picture I did for a friend of mine. The theme I was supposed to convey was sexy, so I guess I nailed it. In case you were wondering, yes, she is an anthro, and her species is Panther/Crocodile hybrid. She’s a wonderful artist and I support her and her work whole heartedly.
