Firstly, many appy loggies for my relative absence from the bubble sphere recently. I’ve been working a retail management job that was a little bit nuts over Christmas, and am changing jobs yet again soon. Also the Back Alley Atelier exhibition has taken up a little bit of time. If you are in Melbourne please check it out and sign the guest book. One bubbler who did come all the way from the Blue Mountains NSW (not just for us, but still special) was gentleman, scholar and fine photographer “Andrew “The Boz Bosman . When he asked if I would like to show him the back alleys of Melbourne, I said “Sweet, I’ll round up some peeps, meet us under the clocks at Flinders St” (or words to that effect). So last Saturday we braved heat that only mad dogs and photographers would. The peeps: / Mark German / Stephen Colquitt / John Robb / Adrian Carmody / Hien Nguyen / Allen Lau The pics: / Cameras are effin’ tough – yeah / Strut / If it has a pulse, shoot it / Take a load off / Showing Boz the pristine bits of Melbourne / Stephen is centred / I got Mark from behind in a mirror / Photographic edumacation / We sent Boz down a dead end / And he ran in to some shady characters / Who said some stuff / We shot random ladies in frocks / The shadows got long and we were getting thirsty / And the Boz looked baffled It was all about love and lens nerds.

Here are my portrait and model photographs during our two-day weekend in Melbourne (March, 200) with Jo OBrien. Two different photo-shoots enabled me to watch and shoot some interesting images. / Whereas the other professional photographers around me were capturing staggering and magnificent images, my shots are much more candid and only posed when possible. It was most certainly an eye-opener and learning-weekend for me. / 1. Big THANKS to Jo, James, Adrian and John for tolerating me on Saturday whilst I mostly watched, sneaking in interesting candid shots of them and the models. / 2. Big THANKS to Jo and James for allowing us to sleep at their home for the weekend, for taking us to dinner on the Saturday night, and for being very friendly people! Some of my friends are beautiful circus freaks, yes they are. And they’re putting on a show as part of the 2008 Melbourne Fringe Festival. And it will be magnificent. You may recognise Tinkle, Mr Plonk and Ghazanfar from work by the delightful and boganic Sir Adrian Carmody. To see them in the flesh, however, is another experience altogether, as their flesh is rather nice and furthermore very talented. Circus Trick Tease is a raunchy, raucous and wildly entertaining caricature of the circus with all its quirks and foibles. A constantly quarrelling collection of misfits comprises a maladjusted sensitive strongman Mr. Plonk, his neurotic femme fatale Tinkle, and their internationally acclaimed superstar Ghazanfar! With cheek, pizzazz, and all to a toe-tapping soundtrack of contemporary musical kitsch, they play out their chaotic roles in dazzling displays of acrobatics, precarious balances, gratuitous headstands and a human skipping rope, all the while competing for the attentions and affections of each other and jostling for the adoration of the crowd. It’s on at the Festival Hub, Lithuanian Club Main Theatre, 44 Errol Street, North Melbourne, from September 26 – October 11, 2008 at 10:15pm (9:15pm on Sundays). Tickets: Conc $14/Full $18/Group $10 / 2 for 1 tickets on Sept 26 & Oct 4 / Bookings: 03 9660 9666 or from www.melbournefringe.com.au See ya there! And now for the end of the plug. / x

Our first port of call on our new munch-musings blog satisfied not only our hungry little bellies. Drifting on an already cumulus-y sunshiney Melbourne day, we perched ourselves on the bar in the minimalistic (white- on- white warehousey without being cold) and busy open room and wet our gums with an aperol spritzer and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. We shared slow cooked octopus with aioli, dehydrated olive, a beetroot salad with walnuts & goats milk feta and baked gnocchi with taleggio & truffle vinaigrette, which were all sublime. / The service smacked Adrians ‘tsk, the service in New York is so much better than in Melbourne’ right across its silly lipped lie. / All in all, wonderful classy food in a casual atmosphere that suits animated punters like us down to a T. / Photo assignment for next week: Coffee /

I shall tell you something cool about Dermot Carmody, and you will pretend that you know who…

I shall tell you something cool about Dermot Carmody, and you will pretend that you know who he is in a manner that is most unlike how you have reacted to talk of Bruce Campbell. Dermot Carmody and Bruce Campbell should work together. Yes, along with that other guy, sure, because 2Irish.com was the greatest website for laughs, ever; and their emails were not bad, either; and, Bruce Campbell is the finest actor, ever. Well, maybe fine isn’t the word. “Scene stealing bastard” has been bandied about, though, and in way it means the same thing: Don’t be in a movie with Bruce Campbell if you want to be noticed overly much! / For those who still don’t get who he is, he’s “that guy!” and “You know! The weirdo with the chin and the teeth who ..” That’s him! Okay, back to Dermot Carmody. Dermot Carmody, as near as I can tell, is to comedy what George Harrison was to love songs. Which is rather, in scope of talent, and compared to most anyone who ever wrote a love song after him, like comparing fine wine (Mr. Harrison) to young, fresh Ripple (most everybody else). But, here is what is really cool, to me, about Dermot Carmody. Now, somehow or other, I ended up writing to him when they were still doing 2Irish.com Okay, that was a long time ago, when I was still relatively young and frisky and had hordes of admirers swimming all through the Net like crazed barracudas. So, it was a bit surprising that he wrote to me, but, not utterly. What was very nice is that it was really good writing which he wrote to me – interesting, funny, obviously had paid attention, sort of emails. So, I was after looking him up the other day, as I was missing 2Irish.com something fierce all of a sudden, and I ran into a site where you could make a comment at him. So, since you weren’t there, I did it for you. Hope you don’t mind! I wrote: Arletta wrote: New comment on your post #7 “Dermot Carmody” / Author : Arletta / E-mail : l / URL : http://arletta.redbubble.com/ / Whois : http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput= / Comment: / Hello. Do you remember me? Do I? Oh yes, I do. I was the girl (now, old broad) who used to write to you just about every day after she discovered 2Irish.com. Pity I didn’t save the emails betwixt us, as they’d have made a darned good book. I used to have a different email address then, though, and it was a wee while ago, like 1997 or something, so.. I give you 30 seconds to orient yourself (no slant eyed jokes please) and get to writing me again. 1 .. .. 3 ….... 5 …...... And then i promptly forgot about it, because, after all, that was a long time ago when he used to reply to me, and surely the man has work or hobibes or something, yes? Right? Well, maybe not, after all, because, and this is the cool part, he did reply. He wrote: Um, it might take me more than 30 seconds… but hi! DC / / Well, I think it’s cool, anyway! For those of you who don’t know who he is, find out. It’s worth your while, because he’s that funny!

I was lucky enough to get the chance to shoot well outside the norm last week, and get some shots together for Melusina a jaw droppingly gifted belly dancer from Melbourne. All going well, these shots will be gracing the pages of Dance Australia magazine, as well as the Underbelly site This was my first collaboration with costume designer/art director/hair stylist/makeup artist Loren Bell… needless to say, I was incredibly happy with the results. This marks the first of many shoots we have planned. Coming up is the album cover for a local punk band, some kooky fairytales, and maybe even a pinhole shoot… nothing like having folks to nudge you along in the right direction To say these are a departure from my normal style of photography would be a massive understatement. Shot at the Polly Bar in Fitzroy (on the advice of dear Jessica Tremp), lighting was the biggest challenge. Once I got my head around what to bounce off where, I think it went really well Here are some of the shots
