I thought this would be a nice card to illustrate the old cliche, “A woman’s work is never done,” and to honor women everywhere who work hard at home, on the job, within the family circle, in the community, in the church, in public service. This energetic little Eastern bluebird female exemplifies an honorable work ethic in her diligence at nest-building. (Note the bedraggled look of poor little Mama’s feathers; temperatures were in the 90s and she was really feeling the heat and humidity! Just about the same concept as a housewife sweating over the stove or the ironing board!)

This male bluebird is puffed up and proud as he shows his latest catch, a nice fat spider, in the ongoing hunt to find food for the nestlings. I am flabbergasted at the tireless activity of these tiny creatures and at their ability to hunt so skillfully and so swiftly. It takes all I have to keep up with them as they go back and forth from the nestbox to the field in search of food. Their labors will soon be rewarded with fledglings that successfully leave the nest and grace the world with their beauty and diligence.

This is a rescued baby wombat, whose mother was killed by a car. He weighs just 1 kilogram, has only just grown his fur coat, and spends most of the day in his wool pouch sleeping. Whilst in Tasmania, in 1 day I saw 6 dead wombats on the side of the road. I didn’t need to check any of their pouches as two were male and the other 4 were so badly decomposed that no young would have still been alive. I hope someone else who came across them before me checked them. I know that some animal/vehicle collisions can’t be avoided, but I really wish people would slow down and take more care. Some even treat animals on the road as sport and deliberately mow them down. To that I shake my head and really do wonder what the $&&@ is wrong with some people…..

The lone baby cardinal in the nest is growing by leaps and bounds. I’ve named the little mite Teensy and watch everyday as Dad and Mom take such good care of their pride and joy. Unfortunately, Teensy’s sibling is no longer in the nest; I don’t know if predators got it, if it fell out, if it just died from weakness, or what. I don’t want to go and look inside the nest as Teensy is very sensitive and fearful at this stage. Teensy is a little over a week old. This is a very precarious time for Teensy; I’m hoping and praying all will go well with this tiny bird’s life as only about one-third of nestings end successfully.

I was shocked to see Teensy standing at the edge of the nest this morning while Mom and Daddy Cardinal clicked and chinked encouragingly to their little one. After a treat from Dad and more clicks and chinks from Mom, Teensy spread tiny wings and took flight to a neighboring rosebush. I will miss seeing the family interacting in their nest in the rosebush near my bedroom window, but I feel blessed beyond words to have been given the opportunity to watch Teensy’s life unfold from egg to hatchling to fledgling. Maybe I’ll spot Teensy later at the feeders! I’ll be sure to keep you posted and thank you for viewing my series of Life with the Cardinals.

Apple blossoms are the focal point of this card which reminds us of the heartwarming words from Deuteronomy that assure us we are in God’s care; we are the apple of his eye.

Just a bit of PS to turn this endearing image of the male cardinal feeding the female on the nest into a sweet dreamy image.

Grubworms constitute the bulk of a cardinal nestling’s diet in the first days after hatching. Here’s Papa bringing home a nice fat one for his awaiting babies. I’ve read that the instinctive need to feed is so strong that cardinals continue to do so even if some mishap befalls the newly-hatched chicks. After losing their clutch to predators, provident cardinal parents have been seen feeding goldfish in ponds; they can’t seem to resist the sight of an open hungry mouth. How wonderful is that! We should all take note and do the same!

This mother cardinal entered the nest with trepidation, looked around warily, and then settled on her eggs. I watched her for three weeks from egg laying to the fledging of her single baby. It was a glorious time for me.

The male and female Eastern bluebirds WORK HARD all day long, hunting for food for their babies. Here is the male hovering at the door of the nestbox; after feeding the babies, he enters the nest, removes the little fecal sacks, and flies away so rapidly, I haven’t been able to capture his waste management duties yet, but I’m still trying. A little postscript: If you’ve never purchased a poster via Red Bubble yet, you’re missing a treat; their posters are second to none!
