This Northern Cardinal male posed regally on a branch just long enough for me to capture this shot. A beautiful songbird, the cardinal is non-migratory and graces my garden year round.
this is a cardinal found in my backyard.
The time of day, the season of the year, the prevailing weather conditions all affect the existing light when I photograph birds in my yard. On this particular occasion, there was a golden glow which I really liked as the backdrop for this brilliant male cardinal so handsome in his suit of vermilion feathers.
Red male Cardinal sitting in tree, shot with Canon 40D and Sigma (Bigma) 50-500 mm lens.
This strikingly attractive Northern Cardinal found a hideout in Mama’s rosebush, but I was able to spot him and snap his photo. Isn’t he a beauty?
This Northern Cardinal was playing peek-a-boo in the rose bushes at Mama’s house. He sits on the thorny branches between trips to the feeders Mama and Daddy keep well-stocked with black oil sunflower seeds. Spring is a glorious time with lots of brightly colored birds busy about the business of being fruitful and multiplying!

I took this shot in my back yard :) The male cardinal is the state bird of both Virginia (where I’m at) and Ohio. It’s such a majestic bird, with a distinctive chirp _ I really hope you enjoy this picture. The only post production that was done was small adjustment of levels and contrast. I also added the black border, of course, to make it look more like a letterbox format. I think the black and red contrast nicely together. All comments are welcomed and appreciated. Just a few more minutes left of the sunshine for the day. This male Cardinal made a last stop for supper and a brief respite in the warm rays before heading off to nest for the night. He’s slightly thinner than the other red gent that was on the bird bath. LavenderMoon~
Bright red Cardinal posing on a branch near my back deck.
Mrs. Redbird showed up at the annual Red Hat Society Brunch but was ousted because she didn’t have the standard purple dress. She was highly miffed, having shucked out a pretty penny for the best red hat money could buy for the occasion. Rumor has it Mrs. R’s going to break company with the other mademoiselles and start her own chapter. Interested parties may contact her at the local pub where she’s staging the revolt. P.S. Sometimes it’s fun to be silly! (Please View Larger to get a better look at Mrs. R’s red hat!)
A cardinal looking to steal some edible at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, Arizona, USA 2009.
This poor old cardinal has lost his ability to fly and I’m afraid his days are numbered. He hops around the feeders eating the castaway seeds on the ground and depends on puddles for water. I put some water at ground level for him and toss seeds near him when I notice his presence. He allowed me to get close enough to take this shot with my macro lens, sure proof that he doesn’t have much fight or flight left in him. Still, he is beautiful as his life winds down.
a brilliant male cardinal survey the feeding area before coming in to feed. Provide perhes around your feeder to make them more attractive to birds. They like to check the area for cats, dogs, or other predators or sources of danger before coming in.

this is the last of my series of male cardinals enjoying the winter sun. I still am enthralled in how wonderful they look in a pine tree covered with snow, very Christmasy looking.
I was sitting near the bluebird house, hoping for a visit from the bluebirds, when to my surprise, this gorgeous male northern cardinal stops by for a visit. He sat long enough for me to snap several shot. This shot was actually taken in the summer. It is my frist attempt at manufacturing snow in photoshop. What do you think?
