  • / “*Piper Nigrum” is part of the Tropics Collection...Watercolour on Fabriano Paper…see others below.. Pungent and aromatic, piper nigrum (black pepper) has been grown in Southern India for more than two thousand years… The fruit, here shown growning on the vine, and known as a peppercorn when dried, is a small drupe five millimetres in diameter, dark red when fully mature, containing a single seed. / Along with other spices, it changed the course of world history, leading to the European efforts to find a sea route to India and consequently colonial occupation of that country, as well as the discovery and colonization of the Americas. Pepper was so valuable that it was often used as collateral or even currency. / Dried ground pepper is one of the most common spices in European cuisine, having been known and prized since antiquity for both its flavour and its use as a medicine. The spiciness of black pepper is due to the chemical piperine. Ground black peppercorn, usually referred to simply as “pepper”, may be found on nearly every dinner table in many parts of the world. • “Berry Fresco” is part of the Texture Collection.... Mixed Media and Watercolour on layers of plaster with etched letters, on Waterford Rough Paper… / / 1328 Views / / FEATURED IN IMPRESSIONIST ART AND OTHER GROUPS Maria Medeiros very kindly offered her photos to me and I have chosen her Vintage Berries (see photo) as the source for this painting, done in a heavily textured style…if you look closely, you will be able to recognize words and sayings about art and life etched into the plaster…I wanted the work to look aged and worn, but the Berries I made fresher looking so as to stand out against the antique background ...a few samples of the collection are shown below…click on each image to view the enlarged version…. / / /

  • / “Jonagold 3 is part of the Portfolio Collection, which has three websites devoted to it alone...acrylic on canvas… the following is an excerpt from my Blog “The Journey”, which describes the process of creating this collection…a few samples are shown below…click on each to see the original page… Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind, as a steady purpose….a point on which the soul may fix it’s intellectual eye”.....Mary Shelley. Since the first of this series “Still Life with Mandarins”, emerged,  I have been deliberately making the symbolic backgrounds of seasons, land, sea, sky, man, his work, etc. etc. more and more stylized….the subject matter however, I want to keep very real.  I like the fruit to look ripe and juicy, as if you could pull it right off the canvas ...... In this way I can escape falling into the trap of the painter as moralist. I still want the work to be decorative….the kind of thing I would want to, and indeed have, hanging in my own home. ....what’s more I would like to involve the viewer in a dialogue with the work ..... No two paintings are alike and I will make sure that they never will be. One thing they do have in common, is the very dark ebb and flow, that swirls around the subject area of the painting…..and again this will be different with each painting .... Laurie Lee’s lyrical words, speak to all of my work during these last few months. Behold the apples’ rounded worlds:
juice-green of July rain,
the black polestar of flowers, the rind
mapped with its crimson stain. / The russet, crab and cottage, red
burn to the sun’s hot brass,
then drop like sweat from every branch
and bubble in the grass. / They lie as wanton as they fall,
and where they fall and break,
the waltzing wasp consumes his share,
the bent worm enters in. / / / / /

  • / “I am the Memory of a Moment of Happiness” is the start of a new series....this one is for Valentine’s Day….Watercolour and Mixed Media on Canvas…Based on another photo by Maria Medeiros called Aroma Musica ...Maria very generously offered her photos to me… / I did not not want to do a literal translation of Maria’s lovely photo, so I took this to a different level by freezing the music and the rosebud, in ice (painted to look so), and in time…the memory of a moment held fast in our hearts, a memory of joy or of sorrow, the lover’s gift, the wedding wreath Mixed Media on Arches Paper..featured in Out of the Blue, Impressionist Art, The Fringe and Image Writing… 1204 Views FEATURED MANY TIMES INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING GROUPS… / IMAGE WRITING. / FEATURED FEATURES. / CHALLENGE WINNER IN IMAGE WRITING AND INSPIRED ART Kahlil Gibran said of the flower… I am the daughter of the elements / With whom Winter conceived; / To whom Spring gave birth; I was / Reared in the lap of Summer and I / Slept in the bed of Autumn. • / The Eye of My Eye is based on another photo by Maria Medeiros called Solemn Thoughts / I decided to reduce the image to a combination of the very essence of her Solemn Thoughts and my The Eye of My Eye, merely touching on the idea of the lilies rather than doing a strict representation of the flower…I also emphasized and enlarged the background, to make the lily float and be more atmospheric…..it’s more about the feelings engendered by the story and the image together .... perfect for Valentine’s Day .... Watercolour on Waterford paper…. By whose touch does the lily smile / And open its beauty – bud? / Whose moonlit beauty / Do I see in the lily? / Who is the Eye of my eye; / Who is the Heart of my heart? / Alas, then why do I not see Him, / His face of transcendental Beauty, / Even in my dreams?
