Giant Blue Clams from Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean Territories, Australia. The wonderful, luminous colours of the clams make them shine underneath the water. When snorkelling of diving in Cocos they are a wonder to see. The clams pictured above are reared beachside in a large salt water nursery. Visitors to the islands can visit the clam farm and learn more about these amazing creatures. This has been my most successful print to date. It won the Wildlife Category of the Expose Your World Photography Awards 2008 (national) and the Open Colour Section of the York Society Photography Awards 2008 (state), as well as a Highly Commended in the Melville Art Awards 2008 (state) and a Highly Commended in the ANZANG Nature Photography Awards 2008, Underwater category (national) and a Highly Commended in the Jan/Feb Fujifilm Showcase Photography Competition. It has also been published in “Camera Magazine” (Jan/Feb issue) . To take it I leant over the water to drop my shadow over the glare on the surface. Of course, the clams saw me do this and thought i was a predator, so they closed. I stood at an almost 90% angle for several minutes until they opened up again. I managed to take 3 frames before they sensed my movement and closed. Canon 5D, ISO 400, f8, AV MODE, 24-105MM L Series Canon Lens / Handheld, no flash, Auto White Balance. As is from camera. A free-range baby orangutan sucking its thumb in Singapore Zoo, Singapore. This critically endangered species demonstrates significant intelligence, with an ability to reason and think. The orangutan is closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA as humans. I’ve been to Borneo (Dec 2007) and was shocked at the amount of jungle cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. Close your eyes, and imagine flying into Sandakan on the east coast – as far as you can see there are rows upon rows of palm trees. Rows upon rows. Then more rows upon rows. Then more rows upon rows. “Orangutans are one of the most critically endangered of the great apes, due to poaching and habitat loss. The image features a photograph of a real White Raven (also known as a “Spirit Raven” by local Haida people) born in May, 2008 on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He is one of two rare white and 3 black Ravens born to 2 accepting (black) parents. The two rare birds are not albino which is what makes them so unusual. Their eyes are quite blue. All 5 siblings are getting along extremely well and all are thriving. White Ravens are very rare and hold sacred meaning for many groups and cultures throughout the World, including Native American Indian, Celtic, Norse and Wiccans. This artwork is another tribute to these remarkably intelligent and friendly birds. 50% proceeds from all sales go to the Mountainaire Avian Society in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. After a very long winter (so far) I needed something that sang Spring time is just around the corner! After a lot of fuss, and several hours, in Photoshop and Painter X this is the final result. Every pixel of this piece was re-painted (digitally) by hand. All of the apple blossoms and leaves were created from scratch. As a final touch I added some texture to the piece to give it that last little edge I was looking for. Its an experiment…trying for selective colour in a crop of wild beauty / and after wrestling for hours with a pesky lasso i managed to briefly subdue it (a first!) and then fumbled the keyboard…arriving somehow at this after rubbing out some scruffy bits. / / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.
