  • Gibson’s Beach, Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia.

  • This husband and wife were originally from Chennai, India, but have moved to Alleppey in search of work. This doorway is their home. What struck me was how proud they were of each other, and how they showed immense affection and respect towards one another. They DEMANDED to be photographed. The nicest people we met in all of India … and quite possibly the nicest two people we’ve met anywhere (typical of Chennai people). I wish them the best of luck.

  • In Cappadocia, a local vendor covered this old branch with evil eye beads. His shop sits on a hill above the village of Uçhisar castle, carved into the volcanic tuff of the region. The evil eye beads I remember from my time in Turkey had yellow in them, unlike most of the ones we saw during our journey. They became talismans to conquer what ancient civilizations feared, such as nighttime dark, storms, earthquakes and eclipses. The blue symbolizes the sky, the white is the aura of the moon, the yellow is the sun disc, and the black spot in the middle is that little bit of evil eating away at the light. In Turkey, the belief is that evil eye beads ward off the effects of the “evil eye,” such as envy or jealousy, and bounce back any curses or ill will. You will see an evil eye bead pinned to the clothing of an infant, hanging from the rear view mirror of a vehicle, decorating the harness of a horse, painted on the back of a big truck/lorry, placed over a doorway… If it breaks, you can grin and throw it away; it has done its job!

I really don’t much in the way of long exposure shots, but after being happy with how this one came out, I am going to start doing them more. Hope ya all like it! • Islamic art, typically, though not entirely focuses on the depiction of patterns and Arabic calligraphy. If you have ever seen Arabic calligraphy you could see that it manages to be both structured as well as organic at the same time. Similar are so many Islamic pattern, they have a strong geometrical sense but still posses great fluidity. This picture is an example of such, it is a hand painted Islamic pattern on the wall of a mosque in Yazd, Iran. The rich colors and the flowing lines are a wonder to see.

  • These cubs were about 7 months old and very playful, but not just now! We were very lucky with our bear sightings and I was able to get some good close-up shots. Still have to use a big lens though! / / (Spitsbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. Let me know what ya think! Can ya hear the rustling of the leaves?? / —-John

  • This was taken inside the Cathedral of Toledo, in Spain. It was taken on film and the print was scanned to digital. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, also called Primate Cathedral of Toledo, is a church in Spain. The seat of the Archdiocese of Toledo, it is one of the three 13th century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. It was begun in 1226 during the reign of Ferdinand III and the last Gothic contributions were made in the 15th century when, in 1493, the vaults of the central nave were finished, during the times of the Catholic Monarchs.
