OMG the very talented RACHEL LEIGH has nominated JUST BOOTS for the Pay it Forward Group She said ” “I love this photo because I know how difficult it is to get good pet shots and the lighting is just superb in this photo. Boots is as cute as can be and she captured him beautifully!” To me this is the highest compliment, thanking you so very much Rachel :O)) Waiting patiently for his morning walk…... Boots our dearest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has the unfortunate name, as being black and tan he has golden lower legs. He was born during the rugby world cup when England actually won something and as his breeder was a rugby fan she called him Golden Boots, after Johny Wilkinson! Started photography May 2008 Sold laminated print RB 23/03/09 BILLYBOY gave the most wonderful compliment when choosing Just Boots. I’m actually kind of glad this is in the Paws & Claws group because now that I’ve been given the opportunity to choose a picture from the group to single out, it’s fitting that my favorite pet picture of all time is right here so I can tell the world just how deeply I love it… / There are so many ways this works for me. The depth of field and selective blur draws attention to the perfect focusing on and around that amazing face, and I like the way the crop being slightly off center works so perfectly with the drape of the ears and the shape of the body. / The lighting is perfect and so natural… no blown out highlights or loss of shadow detail… the quality and direction of the lighting bring out that amazing detail in the facial fur and allows for that subtle reflection on the contrasting smooth surface into which he seems to be slowly melting. Also, the color space of the background matches the subject so perfectly that it’s a pleasing image to the eye even without taking the artistic level of the content into consideration. But I think what REALLY gets to me about this amazing shot is the affect the shooting angle has on drawing me into this pooch’s character. We’re down at his level, as if on equal terms with his world, and I feel as if I’m staring straight into his soul through those deep and all-knowing eyes… the connection between me and Boots is personal through this stunning image. This is a massive work of art and I am honored to be able to exaplin why it’s so special to me. Thanking you so very much Billy, it is such a wonderful compliment. xx Taken with my Sony F717, 800 ISO equiv. Lighting courtesy of my daughter holding a torch as there wasn’t enough natural light! Changed partially to sepia, then bluring and darker tones added for mood…..... After a very long winter (so far) I needed something that sang Spring time is just around the corner! After a lot of fuss, and several hours, in Photoshop and Painter X this is the final result. Every pixel of this piece was re-painted (digitally) by hand. All of the apple blossoms and leaves were created from scratch. As a final touch I added some texture to the piece to give it that last little edge I was looking for. / / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /

Summer Breeze a beautiful poem by the same title by a dear friend of mine Anne Van Alkemade / Inspired by the song Summer Breeze / by Seals and Croft Also inspired by myself and my experience of having bugs and insects come to try and take up residence in my ears… scrabbling around in there, getting all comfy…while I’m going crazy…click beetles, houseflies and spiders so far have all tried this… lol This is a girl who has an affinity with nature, and as the summer breezes begin to blow here in Australia…....the animals are drawn to live in her hair thinking that it must be branches of a tree… yes, my hair’s that dry… :) I thought it a fitting one for summer, hope you like her… Pencil drawing took me about 3 hours / Digital colouring – 10 hours / Total time 13 hours

/ / / / Original pencil drawing “Topiary Teapot” About the Art / A pencil drawing coloured digitally, an elegant geisha enjoys the simple pleasure of her garden. The teapot topiary is also a fountain, you can see water pouring out of the spout and a sprinkler at the tippy top.. :) Inspiration / The inspiration came through my parents, who have a topiary teapot and a topiary sugar bowl in their own backyard, the also told me of an amazing topiary garden they visited in Tassie recently. / / Here is the “teapot topiary” in my parents’ backyard, they are sculpting teapots and sugar bowls….there are lots of fun things in my mum and dad’s garden !! Even the Cheshire Cat and Tinman have a spot in the sun there :)

/ / / I was thinking about when I was around 9 years of age see me at 9 / / ....and I was reminiscing about our pet Blue-ringed Octopus we kept in the fishtank…. he was only tiny, but provided hours of entertainment…when he got riled up, he would put on a fantastic colour show for us…but it occurred to me how hard it must be to be a venomous creature… because you wouldn’t get many hugs, even if you wanted them! / / We spent a lot of our days at Shelley Beach, Port Macquarie and dad caught many strange and wonderful things, which we kept in our saltwater tanks… we also lived at the police lockup, so we had the human variety locked up beside us…and mum would cook meals for them, i would dance for them while they had their exercise break out on the front step, with nothing at all to stop them wandering off…cept me doing a little dance… i must have been riveting as none of them ever tried to escape…and we were kinda friends with the prisoners back in those days… some even sketched and drew pictures of myself and siblings, after getting my mum to go and buy them a little pack of coloured pencils… those were very interesting days :) / / Anyway, we have a bit of a history with capturing wild things in our family, a bit like Steve and Bindi I guess…. so here’s a little drawing, digitally painted, inspired by those days I remember with such fondness… a little girl in her bikini at the beach with a little ‘brunch coat’ as we used to call them over the top…..hosting a dear little Blue-ringed Octopus on her head.. / / There is a funny story I have to share with you too, which is possibly why i put the occy on her head… my father used to catch occy’s for fishing bait (with his bare hands) and stick ‘em in a bucket… his method of killing the poor darlings, was to bite their heads, in the eye area, i kid you not…he believed it the most humane way…. / / To cut the long of it short….. Dad was driving his little truck along after a catch in the Creek at Kingy…when he felt something very strange on the back of his head….the occy he’d caught had crawled out of the bucket….. and where do you think he was…? lol I do miss our menagerie of animals friends, back then i had no idea they were very unusual creatures to keep, including a baby crocodile, a turkey running around the courtyard… and all manner of other strange and wonderful things.

/ / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.

/ / There’s an Elephant in my Garden / a drawing on catridge from my Art Diary / digitally coloured I hope that the grownups who look at this painting will remember something special from their childhood, some hopeful feeling, which will help them through today’s difficulties. There are all the colours of the rainbow in this piece, to remind us that there is always hope, no matter how hopeless it seems sometimes. The rainbow is a sign of hope. Children See/Children Do powerful message for grownups I hope that all the children who look at this painting will drift off into a faraway place in their imagination and feel wonderful for a while, especially if things are getting them down…and if life is wonderful, may this little picture add to the wonder and spark the imagination. Steer II (Missy Higgins) / / Pencil drawing, digital colouring The Golden Elephant – story and art by Karin Taylor / A long long time ago in a tropical land where the papaya grow wild and free, there lived a golden elephant who’s beauty was unsurpassed. All the creatures were mesmerised by what appeared to be the sun entering the water when she swam and when she walked on the land everyone stepped aside, as elephants were revered. Legend has it, the golden elephant was once a beautiful warrior princess. Once, in midst of of a terrible battle with her enemy about to take her life, she made a wish that she could become an elephant, for then no harm would come to her. The beautiful warrior princess was granted her wish, tho could sadly not return to her human form, and so it was that the golden elephant lived forever, bringing warmth and light wherever she went. During the darkest nights when the stars hid and the moon disappeared, the beautiful golden elephant shone like the sun, lighting the way for pilgrims on their journey. Although very happy she got what she wished for, the golden elephant found herself still thinking the grass was sometimes greener on the other side. Indeed she would have liked to be human again. But she accepted her new role and did the best she could with her gift of light.
