‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. My new wolf friend seemed to like having his pictures taken – he stared “up close and personal” right into the lens. ..the old horse transitioning from horseflesh to spirit, his long and arduous journey is over..he’s goin’ home… my Granny always said ‘Live old horse and you’ll get grass”... ‘Welcome home’ Home ‘Bereavement’ I sketched the horse and layered the graphics on top in photoshop+Corel original sketch layered 3 times and added effects and graphics in Corel/Photoshop

The bridge reminds me of an emotion of solitude, which is not to be confused with loneliness. The former leads to an internal peace and being one with nature and oneself while the latter was a feeling of being forced to be alone, deprived of freedom and choice. I used to call this photo “Peaceful Bridge” until a young patient of mine (at the time she was nine years old) explored the difference between solitude and loneliness. When the image was presented to him as an illustration, he exclaimed, “Oh, solitude is peace, inner peace!” And the true title of the piece was born. The doe took a little time off from busy eating for the photo opportunity, although she didn’t want to give up the tasty colorful leaf. By now everyone who has ever seen my work knows that I’m absolutely “addicted” to develop a deep relationship and establish an intimate communication with mule deer (we don’t have a lot of white-tailed deer around here). Yesterday, as a spur of the moment thing, i decided to see whether i actually had enough inpsired works to create a calendar that would really speak to the heart and the soul…something of meaning…..something about the journey of life Hence the Inspired Calendar was born and uploaded to red bubble yesterday A collection of my deep and meaningful mixed media paintings…. to read more about the inspiration for each one, please read the description/explanation or click on the linkety links below to see the art more closely / Jan Pilgrimage / I began the calendar with this one, because it represents the Journey of Life, and here it can represent for you the beginning of a new year, a chance to start over and begin anew, leaving behind the old things and beginning a brand new journey, it is a good time to think about your goals for the coming year and write them down / Feb Seasons / This one comes next as a reminder that for everything, there is a season, a time to live, a time to die, a time to laugh, a time to sing….and the list goes on and on, you will probably experience most of these things throughout the year, this painting is a reminder that these things come and go, as do the seasons, to help you find strength and resilience to cope…if we know our troubled times don’t last forever we can cope with them better, knowing they are finite, and if we know the good times don’t last forever, we will enjoy them more for every moment they are with us / Mar Hidden Treasure / To remind us to look deeper and go further than just our initial response to a person’s in everyone / Apr Heart of Gold / We are all searching for people with a heart of gold, people who will be true and trustworthy…they exist, don’t give up and become cynical about life too early, you might be surprised if you keep your eyes peeled, that there is still some good in this world (also heavily inspired by the novel “Sylvia” by Bryce Courtney) / May Flying Machine / A semi self portrait to remind us, that all things are achievable, even things we sometimes never considered before, to remain open to suggestion from others, don’t put up all your walls at once and refuse to listen, be open…listen to advice, use what you can and throw the rest away…don’t allow critisicm to blind you to what good might be hidden within what people are suggesting, but do not hold onto it so that you bash yourself up and become embittered by it…sometimes people have unclear motives and you are best not to pay to much attention to their choice of words..and what they have spoken over you can be a spell that heightens your own dislike of yourself… we are ourselves our own harshest critics in general…so be kind to yourself / Jun Midnight Blues another semi self portrait, but not of my face, this is my soul…the soul/spirit….this is on a blue day, a day when i think large thoughts and ponder the universe…a reminder of the times when sometimes we need a quiet place and a little music to space out for a while under the stars and moon and gain a little perspective on things…..go and live in another place in your mind’s eye for a little while, i often transport myself to the beach and lie on my towel on the sand, absorbing the suns rays, and feel a trillion zillion times better after that…....or i deliver myself to a deserted island where sky meets water in an endless aqua haze, a soft breeze kissing my cheek and hugging my skin, and the rustle of palm leaves comforts me as does the smell of the salty sea and fallen ripening coconuts rotting in the sand…i hear the water as it gently laps the sand, and my heart is made calm / Jul Polly’s Pearls / This one represents the search in life for the greatest treasure of all, the pearl of great price, that thing that we’ll give up everything else for….the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the hopes and dreams that we strive for, and it shows the intensity with which we need to look for it and strive….this is the journey….sometimes fraught with danger, but an important journey nontheless, the struggle against complacency / Aug Titian Blonde / This is like a dreamscape of desire for me, the desire to be free of my shackles and chains… if one wishes to stand on a mountain in the middle of darkness under a starry night, and contemplate flying across the sea with the wind blowing their hair, then why shouldn’t that be a possiblity….come fly with me, across the ocean deep, where troubles dissipate beneath your feet…. / Sep Still Waters / to remind us to rest and take it easy…sometimes the waters are still and calm, and we feel a sense of lostness less the business and buffeting of the waves we normally find some resistance in, a reminder to let go, and just ‘be’, a reminder to simply enjoy the silence and stillness / Oct iliki Spirit of Aloha / a reminder to embody the spirit of aloha, to display aloha to others and throughout your life “Akahai,” meaning kindness, / to be expressed with tenderness; “Lokahi,” meaning unity, / to be expressed with harmony; “Oluolu,” meaning agreeable, / to be expressed with pleasantness; “Haahaa,” meaning humility, / to be expressed with modesty; “Ahonui,” meaning patience, / to be expressed with perseverance. These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii’s people. It was the working philosophy of Native Hawaiians and was presented as a gift to the people of Hawaii. “Aloha” is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation. “Aloha” means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. “Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence. “Aloha” means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable. Iliki was also heavily inspired by the novel “Hawaii” by James Michener / Nov Thoughts Become Things / A reminder that Thoughts do become Things, so take time to ponder your thoughts and where they may lead, don’t spend too much time rushing about, sit and be still for a time, allow your mind to fill with new ideas and ways to achieve them, keep up your creative spirit…enchant me, enchant others…bring life to old things…bring joy to others / Dec Cross Your Heart / Remember others, be otherly…but remember to take care of your own heart first, so that it is well and whole and healthy….strive for goodness and kindness and loveliness…our world is troubled, hasn’t it always been though….but through this be a light and a beacon to others, for what other reason is there than this…. take care of you, so that you can share your wellness, creativity, love for life and encouragement with others… and goodness and kindness will follow….like karma….and even when it doesn’t seem to, remember always, that you have deposited some good…and this is enough :) Other Christmas cards and art by Karin /

Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / / ‘Asia Series’ card by Karin Taylor This piece is imbued with a lot of heartfelt meaning. / Here is a painting I did in response to the story of Sadako. One day my daughter Sarah bought home a little sheet of paper with the story of Sadako on it and I was deeply moved by the tragic story of her life. You can read all about Sadako by googling her name or the story about the Thousand Paper Cranes. Just briefly though, Sadako was just a little baby when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and by the age of 11 years she had lost her fight for life due to leukaemia, as a result of the radiation from the bomb. Sadako tried hard to be cheerful and dreamed of living a long life. A little friend of hers suggested that she make 1000 paper cranes, because as legend had it, doing this could make your dreams come true. Unfortunately, Sadako died, she was only able to make 600 cranes (please see Mui-Ling Teh’s comment below for more information), but her courageous effort and fighting spirit lives on in the hearts of everyone everywhere who hears her story of hope, faith and determination. / www.sadako.org/sadakostory.htm This picture is all about Sadako being taken up into heaven at the moment of her passing from this life to the next. There are a few symbols in this painting that represent different things. The camouflage on her dress represents wartime. The wings indicate Sadako has a heavenly body now, and you can see Sadako is actually affixing them to herself as she accepts her fate. The magic carpet is taking her up to heaven. The little doll is her companion in this life and the next, similar idea to the ancient egyptians who placed belongings of the deceased with them inside the pyramids for comfort in the next life, the circles in the background represent glowing light emanating from the black stars in the sky, guiding her way to her new destination. There is an air of both sadness and triumph…leaving this world is sad, but entering the next healed and whole is triumphant. This painting won a prize at an exhibition in Tweed Heads last year.

My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. Her litter mates ran around when the camera aimed at them but she stood in attention every time a photo opportunity showed up! :) I’m sure she’d be glad that I donate the proceed of the sale of her photos to Nature Canada as she loves woods and her deer friends as much as I do! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.
