Giant Blue Clams from Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean Territories, Australia. The wonderful, luminous colours of the clams make them shine underneath the water. When snorkelling of diving in Cocos they are a wonder to see. The clams pictured above are reared beachside in a large salt water nursery. Visitors to the islands can visit the clam farm and learn more about these amazing creatures. This has been my most successful print to date. It won the Wildlife Category of the Expose Your World Photography Awards 2008 (national) and the Open Colour Section of the York Society Photography Awards 2008 (state), as well as a Highly Commended in the Melville Art Awards 2008 (state) and a Highly Commended in the ANZANG Nature Photography Awards 2008, Underwater category (national) and a Highly Commended in the Jan/Feb Fujifilm Showcase Photography Competition. It has also been published in “Camera Magazine” (Jan/Feb issue) . To take it I leant over the water to drop my shadow over the glare on the surface. Of course, the clams saw me do this and thought i was a predator, so they closed. I stood at an almost 90% angle for several minutes until they opened up again. I managed to take 3 frames before they sensed my movement and closed. Canon 5D, ISO 400, f8, AV MODE, 24-105MM L Series Canon Lens / Handheld, no flash, Auto White Balance. As is from camera. Saltspring Island, just off Vancouver Island, is a peaceful spot to go to simply enjoy the beauty of the water, the sea birds, and the fir trees. And the Northwest’s plants are in their glory there! This watercolor painting is of one of the very colorful rhododendrons we found there one spring. “Autumn Gold” is its actual name. This image is available for purchase as a print and can be obtained by contacting me through Bmail. Painted on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper, using primarily Daniel Smith watercolor paints, along with a few from Winsor & Newton. Taken on a Canon DSLR using a tripod and natural light. / The Bridestowe Estate Lavender Farm established in 1922, is the one of the world’s largest single commercial lavender farms, producing the finest quality lavender flowers and lavender oil used traditionally in the perfumery industry. 930 views as of Nov. 13, 2009 Featured in The Birds – Feb. 15, 2009 / I can almost feel it. Spring is JUST around the corner. It’s such an exciting time in Canada after a long and cold winter. The lilac trees bloom putting forth the sweetest scent and the hummingbirds return to our property after a long migration. Yes, Spring will be here before we know it. I can’t wait! I spent countless HOURS last summer, sitting in a lawn chair, ever so patiently waiting to try & capture one of these little darlings in flight. They are only 7-9 cm long. While hovering their wings beat 55x/s, 61x/s when moving backwards, and at least 75x/s when moving forward! / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / Processing info: / This image started out with 3 photograph layers (the lilac background image, a female ruby-throated hummingbird, and the tail from a different photo of the same bird). I took all of the original images with my Canon DSLR. After removing the background around the original bird photos I merged all of the layers in PhotoShop. I digitally painted/blended the entire image in Corel Painter X using the Impasto Depth Smear brush at 30% opacity. I cloned out a distracting branch in the upper left corner and performed blend # 2 work on the main lilac blooms, hummingbird, and the largest leaves using grainy blender 10 brush at 38% opacity. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

The sunlight through the petals and leaves looked lovely against the backdrop of the snow outside. Our short days make sunshine seem all the more precious, even indoors.
