Tonight I found out that surprises occasionally come in sixes….! / My newfound bubbly friend Michelle Whennan who is a great photographer…i particularly love her fire twirling images for which i think she recently won a prize… / Circles of Flame by Michelle Whennan Shell has a beautiful daughter Elli who likes my art…wow, can you believe that…how special this is….i am so touched :D So I wanted to journal this and publicly thank Shell for the purchase of these cards, and hope you enjoy them to the max! • / Midnight Blues by Karin Taylor Well howdy my bubbly friends, and wouldya believe i got me favourite piece of art featured on the HOMEPAGE tonight!! omi!!! omeeee!!! omi!!!! You see, i was just havin’ a little whinge about how i never get featured no more….. / and the one i was thinkin’ deserved a little featuring…just happens to pop up on / the homepage….wo!! I should try whingin’ a little more often (nah, my family disagrees!!!!!) lol Midnight Blues is from a painting i did recently on Arches Aquarelle Paper 56×76cm, a mixed media production, utilising inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoals, found objects such as string and fabric….and the most beautiful gold paint which gives the guitar it’s lustre Midnight Blues is from the Inspired Series by Karin Taylor, during the painting of this, i was strongly influenced by my favourite Australian artist, Brett Whitely, longing to capture something of the wonderful curves he created in his works. It has a dark and sombre feeling, much like how i was feeling at the time i created her. I used to laugh and carry on that my thoughts and my moods could ever be conveyed through a painting, and it was just silly that people reckoned they did so, but just look at me now….i cannot seem to prevent it happening these days!! lol…that’ll teach me to scoff :)

Hidden Treasure Golden eggs are not always easy to find / Sometimes they lay hidden in the pockets of our seams / Sometimes we have to look beyond the obvious to see / the beauty in others~ traits of kindness, compassion, nurture and / gentleness are not always obvious at first glance and / what one may perceive as a fault or weakness / may actually be a great strength Hidden Treasure is a mixed media production on hardboard. Included in the mix are moulding paste for the eggs, gold and bronze paint, silver thread, fabric, charcoal, ink, pastel and acrylic with a gloss varnish over the eggs. / There is a poem in the background in gold cursive handwriting, which reads: Hidden Treasure Golden eggs are not always easy to find / Sometimes they lay hidden in the pockets of our seams / Sometimes we have to look beyond the obvious to see / the beauty in others~ traits of kindness, compassion, nurture and / gentleness are not always obvious at first glance and / what one may perceive as a fault or weakness / may actually be a great strength.

  • These Cards Have Been Given a New Home
    by Stephen Mitchell

As previously mentioned, I purchased fifteen of my own photographs ...

As previously mentioned, I purchased fifteen of my own photographs as cards. I’d ONLY planned to give a few away as gifts to close friends, and in particular to the one person who convinced me that my photography was worth selling. She knows who she is. So this morning I brought fifteen cards into work purely to allow these friends to choose the picture they liked most … and allow them to have it for FREE. These are the photographs they choose. / / ... for Yve / ... for Rosie / ... for Jenny / ... for Liam / / Little did I realise what would happen next… / / First, Jenny liked them so much she insisted (read: I caved) on having four more. Who am I to argue with a woman? So I decided on a price, she agreed … and I earned another ten dollars. Yes, I reduced the cost to $2.50. But that’s what you do for friends, and free publicity. / / , , So I stopped for a minute to consider my options. Why not sell them? OK, so I had instructions from “SWMBO” to keep some for Xmas and Birthday cards later this year. I was implicitly told that two would go family interstate within the next week! / / So after a quick email, these two photographs were purchased by Yve: / / , Then Wendy said she might miss out – so she bought three (and asked for three that had already been purchased)! / / , , Whew! I feel exhausted and exhilarated all at once! And I need to remember to exhale. Because selling one’s artwork is like giving one’s children away. The photography and post-production is nothing compared with suddenly becoming a ‘recognised photographer’. One person did say I could make more money if I did all this myself. Possibly. But all I want to do is photograph. RedBubble remove the hassle by doing all the framing, laminated, sending, and finances for me! / / One more thing: Wendy also gave me the boost and the BEST Quote of the day : ” I’d rather spend my money on your work, not on Hallmark! “ / Wow, I’ve been compared with Hallmark – and won! She also indicated she will purchase more of my cards online. Only one of the didn’t sell. I get to keep this one for my desk: ‘A picture tells a thousand words’. I love this quote. No longer do I need to write to family and friends – I only have to take one photograph to write a thousand words!

I am a semiserious photographer who began to become serious during a previous life in the world of independent documentary film. This was after growing up in Kabul, Jeddah and Ankara as a diplomat’s daughter. The community of independent documentary film is where it dawned on me that I accepted the responsibility of asking viewers to see through my eyes. I began to shoot documentary stills, live and copy stand work. Then I added a very nice macro lens to my old Olympus OM2 to photograph things people don’t usually see unless they look close. A year ago, I broke down and purchased a basic digital camera, an Olympus SP-500UZ, so I could take it with me on my journey back to Turkey and use the internet to send photos for posting on our web site Ankara High School Connections RedBubble has inspired me to learn to use the macro function on the digital Olympus, and I am trying to see the image as a card. Looking around RedBubble’s Gallery, whose name has been reduced to “art” as Journal was degraded to “blog,” I have found inspiration for some wonderful images of where I live. I saw a photo of an old coffee grinder that reminded me we have one in the Casa. I have an old Yemeni silver dagger and a case like one I’ve seen here on RedBubble. I have found photos that evoke the same feelings as some of mine. RedBubble is something I found by accident during a search for direction in getting Frog in a Rose / digitally printed onto nylon as a garden flag. I signed up on RedBubble because it offers fabulous photos as cards, even ones of my photos! Anita Donohoe / Rancho San Julian / Santa Barbara County, California
