Featured in Halloween and Inspired Art groups This image goes along with the poem Something Wicked by autumnwind as part of a collaboration for the Halloween Art & Writing Challenge in the Halloween Group * “Something Wicked” / The wondrous age of twelve years old / Holds stories yet have not been told / Of places chanced upon in fright / Where evil lurked with all its might / By name the Reservoir so called / A magnet dark, hung low and crawled / Its venom veiled and so enticed / For those who dared upon it thrice That summer’s eve I shan’t forget / As now recalled with deep regret / For death arose, its shape unfurled / And offered up it’s Godless world / Trembling so, yet held bewitched / The wind encircled and transfixed / Design of malice so precise / For those who dared upon it thrice This foulest dread did not offend / Enraptured rather to the end / In blackest beauty lust transcends / And so devoured my dearest friend / Whatever broke thy devils trance / I offer up to heaven’s chance / As wicked waged its dire device / For those who dared upon it thrice In nightmares beauty changes form / Of deadly charms I do thee warn / Seducing madness paid its price / For those who dared upon it thrice* Acrylic on 9×12 canvas board- Inspired by the song ‘A Beautiful Lie’ by 30 Seconds to Mars. I was watching the music video for “A Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars, and was really touched by the intro with the Eskimos. (If you haven’t seen this, here’s the link! A Beautiful Lie Video ) The band is really breaking grounds by putting this environmental awareness stuff out there. (It can make or break your career in the music biz) I also thought that the director/photographer for the video was a genious! It’s such a captivating and stunning video, the shots of the scenery is amazing! So….I downloaded the CD. (It’s one of my faves right now….GREAT music!) Without the video to distract, I listened to the song with my eyes closed, as I knew this one would work for my next painting. (This is kinda part of my process right now. LOL) The little electric sounds at the beginning and end of the song made me feel like I was either falling into space or just into the dark oblivion. Empty, alone, fragile…..that’s where the background came from. IT’s a deep deep blue almost black – I added the parts that kind of spin out from the inner circle to show that things are spinning out of controll and that you’re spiraling down into the depths of something. Once I had the background done, I went back to listening to the song while the paint dried. This time, I saw that poor poor faerie was the one falling into nothing. This is when I decided to keep everything dark – whites blacks and grays – because I knew there would be an explosion of red. The white and gray leaves came next. I felt like the gray wasn’t the right color, but thought it might look better after adding the trunk and branches. So, I went with a solid black for that. I chose the black to keep with the dark theme, but also because it would really stand out in some parts, yet kind of fade into the background in other areas. (A Beautiful Lie – this is a beautiful tree, but is it really there?) This is when I hated it and wanted to trash it and start over! Instead, I stepped away from it for 2 days – came back refreshed and decided to add in the red & silver. I did the silver to throw in a brighter color to balance the piece a bit, but to also show the etherealness of the faerie. The faerie has fallen and was basically held by the tree. Shes fading into the background and there are spots of her silver body throughout the piece. She’s kind of becoming everything around her. I very much believe in reincarnation and life after death. (Which is also why the pose is almost like the crusifix.) It’s kind of a play on organized religion and what we’ve been told about death in general – It’s all a beautiful lie! :) The red was chosen to symbolize blood. This makes the viewer pose some questions – is it all blood? are those blood splatters or wings? are those blood spots or flowers in the tree? All in all, it’s a play on reality – what’s really there? what isn’t? Is it all just a beautiful lie?! “Lie awake in bed at night / And think about your life / Do you want to be different? / Try to let go of the truth / The battles of your youth / ‘Cause this is just a game It’s a beautiful lie / It’s a perfect denial / Such a beautiful lie to believe in / So beautiful, beautiful it makes me…” Full lyrics / A Beautiful Lie Video / 30 Seconds to Mars

Schlegeis reservoir, or artificial lake, lies in south west Austria. The mountains in the skyline are actually in Italy. On that day we hiked past this lake to the Italian border, some 15 kilometers. Reaching Italy, we quenched our thirst on some Italian beer and walked back. Nikon D50 / Nikkor 18-79 f/3.5-4.5G / Aperture: f/9.0 / Shutter: 1/250 sec / Focal Length: 24mm / ISO: 200 / . /

OMG the very talented RACHEL LEIGH has nominated JUST BOOTS for the Pay it Forward Group She said ” “I love this photo because I know how difficult it is to get good pet shots and the lighting is just superb in this photo. Boots is as cute as can be and she captured him beautifully!” To me this is the highest compliment, thanking you so very much Rachel :O)) Waiting patiently for his morning walk…... Boots our dearest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has the unfortunate name, as being black and tan he has golden lower legs. He was born during the rugby world cup when England actually won something and as his breeder was a rugby fan she called him Golden Boots, after Johny Wilkinson! Started photography May 2008 Sold laminated print RB 23/03/09 BILLYBOY gave the most wonderful compliment when choosing Just Boots. I’m actually kind of glad this is in the Paws & Claws group because now that I’ve been given the opportunity to choose a picture from the group to single out, it’s fitting that my favorite pet picture of all time is right here so I can tell the world just how deeply I love it… / There are so many ways this works for me. The depth of field and selective blur draws attention to the perfect focusing on and around that amazing face, and I like the way the crop being slightly off center works so perfectly with the drape of the ears and the shape of the body. / The lighting is perfect and so natural… no blown out highlights or loss of shadow detail… the quality and direction of the lighting bring out that amazing detail in the facial fur and allows for that subtle reflection on the contrasting smooth surface into which he seems to be slowly melting. Also, the color space of the background matches the subject so perfectly that it’s a pleasing image to the eye even without taking the artistic level of the content into consideration. But I think what REALLY gets to me about this amazing shot is the affect the shooting angle has on drawing me into this pooch’s character. We’re down at his level, as if on equal terms with his world, and I feel as if I’m staring straight into his soul through those deep and all-knowing eyes… the connection between me and Boots is personal through this stunning image. This is a massive work of art and I am honored to be able to exaplin why it’s so special to me. Thanking you so very much Billy, it is such a wonderful compliment. xx Taken with my Sony F717, 800 ISO equiv. Lighting courtesy of my daughter holding a torch as there wasn’t enough natural light! Changed partially to sepia, then bluring and darker tones added for mood…..... Would make a super card ideal for any occasion, Birthday, Thank You, etc…. © Copyright 2008 Squealia, All Rights Reserved /

I took the shot on a table, with a small black dog bed on it, and the blanket Butterfly is sitting on is placed on top of that. There was a window in the direction of her tilted head, so side-on to me. I used a Canon 50mm prime lens at about f2.2 to get a sharp nose and eyes but blurred background. I use this technique mostly when im shooting in very low light and particularly for the RSPCA as it gives an etheral and more emotive feel to the shots i think. The rest of this room was quite dark as the RSPCA movie was being filmed in it at the same time. Butterfly was too fragile to be on the floor with the larger kittens, so i took a break in taking stills of the movie making process and babysat her for a while, on my makeshift ‘studio’. Her story – This is a 5 week old kitten called Butterfly. She was found abandoned at 1 week old with her brother, wrapped in a towel and dumped in a park. Her brother didnt make it, and Butterfly has had her battles but she is doing well and will be ok. I was lucky enough to get to spend an hour with her taking photos and talking cat talk out at the RSPCA WA headquateres. She is so tiny and so cute…I fell in love. The RSPCA vet nurse is going to take her home as soon as she has grown and doesnt need monitored care. Taken with a Canon 5D and Canon 50mm prime lens @ f 2.2, ISO 800 1/200th sec. Natural window light used. Handheld. No editing. Profit portion of any sales will go to the RSPCA WA. Featured in Cats & Dogs Group (twice), and The Photographers Craft Group. Won “Best Animal Photo” in the As Is Group Challenge and is currently the Avatar for that group (14th Feb 09). Featured in Kittens Group & As Is Group, June 2009. Looks Best Full Size As I walked toward these wonderful, rickety old sheds near the Triadelphia Reservoir in Montgomery County, Maryland, this lovely creature alighted on the fence post and very obligingly posed for me. I caught this shot right before he floated away. I liked the way the butterfly and posts came out in nice crisp detail with the sheds and overgrown shrubs in a blurry bokeh.
