Featured in First Things, Painted Nature, and Color Me a Rainbow groups Acrylic on 9×12 canvas board- Inspired by the song “Open Channel” by Kan’Nal. This entire piece was created while listening to both of Kan’Nal’s CDs on repeat. (Dreamwalker & Kan’Nal) I was in a very bright mood and felt that it translated onto the canvas in the yellow background. As I was letting it dry, I kept being drawn to the song ‘Open Channel’. Everytime the chanting and primal beats of the chorus would start, I would have to get up and move my body. It’s impossible to listen to this band and not feel the urge to move! “And there was always something / Up in the mountain and in the ocean, / A channel that is open to anyone / who would listen to, I listen to it. Ooh jah a leh ah Ooh jah a leh leh leh leh / Ooh jah a leh ah Ooh jah a leh leh leh leh / Ooh jah a leh ah Ooh jah a leh leh leh leh / Ooh jah a leh ah Ooh jah a leh leh leh leh” Each time I would close my eyes, I would see vibrant bursts of reds and oranges against all that yellow. So I started with the random drips of paint blown about by my straw. The tree trunk, branches, and roots came next. Something about the title, ‘Open Channel’, made me depict the tree connected to nothing….and everything at the same time. I added the darker red leaves/petals and began looking over the painting to see if I was, indeed, finished. ‘Palenque Rain Song’ was playing, the soft sound of rain drops filling my head. (This is a wonderful meditation song!) During the rain, a bell chimed – it was like someone hitting a gong or turning on a switch in my head. I knew then that there were some little faeries that wanted to live in this tree. They are not detailed, they are glowing with energy, they resemble dragonflies because the viewer does not yet see them as real beings. If there is anywhere I love to shoot, then it has to be Garden Of The Gods Park outside of Colorado Springs. Recently the opportunity presented itself to photograph it in the fog and mist, weather we rarely get here in Colorado…..I jumped at the chance! HDR used along with The Orton Technique. / Thoughts welcomed! / —John

Featured in Rural Around The Globe March 21, 2009. BEST VIEWED FULL SIZE! This image was taken on October 30, 2008 on Brookeville Road in Montgomery County, Maryland with the Nikon D40x and the 18-135mm Nikon lens. This was a RAW/NEF image which has been tweaked in Capture NX2 and combined with a second jpeg(ed) Orton(ed) version of the same image. I’d like to thank Garth Smith for very kindly encouraging me to try Nikon’s RAW/NEF image editing software Capture NX2. I think it’s going to open a whole new world for me!! Thanks again, Garth!!! I think this version is a huge improvement over the previously posted image!!

Every Autumn, mother nature loads her brush with yellows, oranges and reds and paints the trees with brilliant colour. I wish I could capture the true beauty of the season in watercolours! Watercolour on paper.

Kings River Falls, and it preserved natural area is most beautiful to me in the mid spring, when the wild Azalias are in bloom, and many other interesting, and beautiful wild flowers there. I love how the Azalias framed the falls in this scene. / Canon Powershot S3 IS
