  • “Quietly lying by her barn, this pretty ewe made me stop my bicycle ride to pay her a visit. In a placid cool afternoon, she greeted me with a sweet glance and a calm disposition. Her face was beautiful and her eyes melted my heart. Surrounding a sea of amber and golden hues, her long white eyelashes framed surprisingly bright eyes. / / Taking close-ups on her adorable face, a rainbow of colours and patterns unveiled: the iris wore fine lines defining a gradient of rich earth colours. Her eyes sparked like jewels. When I bade her good-bye, she quietly turned her head towards me in what I took as a kind invitation to visit her once again. “ / / / Image © Carmen Mandel-Cesáreo / / / —-—-—-—-— / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. • I adopted Cara from the local Animal Protection League 2 years ago. She supposedly has at least some Maine coon cat in her, so I decided to give her a Maine related name. There are two towns in Maine for which I have fond memories, Old Orchard Beach and Carrabassett Vallley. Guess which town I chose to name her after…

  • “She lay quietly among other flowers. As if unaware of her intense beauty, she humbly shared a crowded stand in a farm. She whispered by my ear and I turned. My eyes were filled with her regal colours as my heart halted. Her glowing face nodded at me. / / I indulged myself in the contemplation of her sheer beauty, her intricate face, her lovely petals and her delicate patterns. I wondered whether she was missing the feeling of warm damp soil, the company of foliage and the caress of misty rain”. / / / During my travels in Thailand and Cambodia, I reveled in the extraordinary and fragile beauty of the Orchid. A large-scale illegal trade and other threats decimate their environment. / / Currently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCNR) list 100 Orchid species in status from vulnerable to critically endangered. / / / Image © Carmen Mandel-Cesáreo / / / —-—-—-—-— / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. • Anam Cara is Gaelic for “soul friend”, while working on this Knotwork the thought of this Celtic circle of belonging would not leave my mind… / John O’Donohue’s book was one of the most profound and life-changing reads of my life ~ “Friendship is the sweet grace that liberates us to approach, recognize, and inhabit this adventure. A creative and subversive force, claiming this intimacy is the secret law of life and universe. The human journey is a continuous act of transfiguration. If approached in friendship, the unknown, the anonymous, the negative, and the threatening gradually yield their secret affinity with us. As an artist, the human person is permanently active in this revelation. The imagination is the great friend of the unknown. Endlessly, it invokes and releases the power of possibility. Friendship, then, is not to be reduced to an exclusive or sentimental relationship; it is a far more extensive and intensive force. / The Celtic imagination articulates the inner friendship that embraces Nature, divinity, underworld, and human world as one. The dualism that seperates the visible from the invisible, time from eternity, the human from the divine, was totally alien to them. / The Anam Cara was a person to whom you could reveal the hidden intimacies of your life. This friendship was an act of recognition and belonging. When you had an ‘Anam Cara’, your friendship cut across all convention and category. You were joined in an ancient and eternal way with a friend of your soul.” There are many here that I feel are my “Soul Friends”, you know who you are…I just wanted to acknowledge those who echo my soul ;) Aeone ~ Anam Cara artwork sketch photographed and edited in photoshop7, colored with wacom pen and filtered with redfield plug-in fractilius and poster edges

  • I woke up one morning to check my email and saw that sweet young Cara was scheduled to die at the shelter in South Los Angeles at noon – she wasn’t even a year old :( / I heard that someone wanted to save her life but could not get to her in time so I contacted one of my best friends and we worked together to get Cara pulled from the e-list. A kind rescue volunteer pulled her from the shelter for us and brought her to a vet’s office to be boarded. A few days later I drove 6 hours myself to go get her from the vet’s office and deliver her myself to the lady who spoke up for her in the final hours. Cara was one of the lucky ones and is now happy and enjoying life in her new home. So many others are not so fortunate. I hope that everyone out there reading this will consider adopting or at least helping to foster one of the countless homeless pets out there.

  • A Crested Cara Cara is a member of the Falcon family. Cara Cara’s will feed on small snakes, lizards and other small prey but their main diet is carrion. Often found like you see in this photo on the fence line over looking the highway for any fallen prey. These birds live in a concentrated area of Central Florida, and virtually unknown outside the interior of south and central Florida. I have tried for many years now to capture one of these cool looking birds, although seen many times, often out of reach of my 300mm lens. This is my all time favorite shot because it took me 3 long years to get. • Mandrills are the largest of all Old World monkeys. They are shy and reclusive primates that live only in the rain forests of equatorial Africa. Mandrills are extremely colorful, perhaps more so than any other mammal. They are easily identifiable by the blue and red skin on their faces and their brightly hued rumps. These distinctive colors become brighter when the animal is excited. They also have extremely long canine teeth (two inches/five centimeters) that can be used for self-defense—though baring them is typically a friendly gesture among mandrills. These colorful primates are threatened. They are often hunted as bushmeat, and many Africans consider them to be a delicacy. Mandrills are feeling the squeeze of spreading agriculture and human settlement—both are shrinking their rain forest homeland. picture taken at melbourne zoo / canon 5D 70-200mm L f4
