  • These African wild dogs are captive at the Wellington Zoo in New Zealand. They seem so unsettled, waiting and praying for the day some poor foolish souls releases them. I hope I’m not around if…when.. that happens. They seem to have come straight from hell… even a hyena would be challenged by these restless spirits.

  • ROAD TRIP TO THE TORONTO ZOO / On Monday July 21st., I went on another road trip. / This time with my daughter and 4 year old granddaughter. / Neither of them have been to the Toronto Zoo, so that is where we spent the entire day. / It was a wonderful experience to share with them. / Hannah was full wonder and lots of questions. It was sad to see these animals in captivity. / I know they are taken very good care of at the Toronto Zoo, but still… being confined is the sad part for me….BUT if it weren’t for the Toronto Zoo, Hannah would never be able to see these beautiful creatures up close, plus I would not have had the chance to share that day with her or my daughter. As we were checking out the animals my granddaughter yelled…Grams he’s kissing the tree. So I had to get this shot for her. / There is another shot that was especially cute ...so check them out!!!

  • This Liger stole my heart as I saw her lying just above the cage on her perch. This was taken at the walk-thru portion of a Wild Animal Safari park my husband & I went to. The drive-thru portion was 99% amazing. It was the most peaceful, tranquil, & beautiful interactions within nature I have ever seen. So many different animals living together in more than close proximity with no animosity whatsoever. It was glorious. Until we got to the big cats. With all of the endless space out there, the big cats were confined to a much less than adequate caged spaced. I understand the need for cages for the safety of the animals and the people. However, it made me so angry that the cats were given so little space when there was so much available. My heart was to break further when we entered the walk-thru portion. Very few of the animals in the walk-thru portion of the Safari had adequate quarters. It made me sick & still does or I wouldn’t be writing about it now. Ten little rabbits had more space all together than any of the other animals did (proportionally speaking). This Liger basking in the sun seemingly above the captivity, where she really belongs, gave me joy. Please don’t misunderstand: I believe zoos, safaris, and especially conservations have their place and play a significant role in education and animal preservation. I do not believe that zoos are places of animal torture just by mere existence. They are often places of safe haven or asylum for animals who might otherwise have no place to go & face extinction due to this. However, these facilities have a duty to provide a certain quality of life for these animals. This quality of life was not present for the animals in the walk-thru portion I experienced. I suppose that’s enough on my soap box! / C8E70-B23E1-FB462

  • This species of antelope is one of the rarest mammals on Earth. It is likely there are more in the US zoos than still exists in the wild. The herd in Fossil Rim Wildlife Center likely is between 50-100 which is where this photo was taken. It is located just west of Glen Rose, Texas near the Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex. Following information is from Animal Info Addax once occurred throughout the deserts and sub-deserts of North Africa from the Atlantic to the Nile. However, by the late 1800’s this range was already shrinking. By 1972, the addax was found mainly in Rio de Oro, Mauritania; North Mali and Chad; with some in Algeria, South Libya, and North Sudan. It was rare everywhere except in the uninhabited area in Mauritania and Mali in the western Sahara. The only known remaining population of the addax is in the Termit/Tin Toumma region of Niger. There are sporadic records of small isolated groups and individuals from the Eastern Air Mountains/Western Ténéré desert in Niger, and from the Equey region of western Chad. The decline of the addax has been caused mainly because of motorized hunting with modern weapons by indigenous people who sought meat and leather. The expansion of pastoral agriculture, prolonged drought, harassment by desert travelers, mining exploration, and in some areas tourists, have also been factors. unaltered photograph Camera data / Canon EOS Rebel XTi / F-stop f/8 / Exposure 1/160 / ISO 100 / Focus 28mm

  • A clouded leopard rests in a typical, if rather bored looking, pose on a tree branch in it’s indoor enclosure at the Toronto Zoo in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, this beautiful cat is kept indoors during cold weather. So winters in Toronto, when this animal remains inside for several days at a time, can get rather dull. .
