  • This shot has a bit of a story behind it, I was with a group of fellow photographers on what we call a Ferry Hop expedition. Basically we spend the day or most of it, riding the Sydney Ferries to different destinations taking photos on board and where ever we disembark. On this particular outing a few of my fellow photographers and I decided to issue a challenge, walk up to perfect strangers and ask for to take their photo. This was only the second person I ask after the challenge was issued. This lovely gentleman had a great face, a lovely white and gray beard and looked just the part for a nautical theme. As it happens when I approached him, we were nearing a replica tall ship and the Darling Harbour light house (scene in the background). Well all the elements just fell into place, and I only took two shots but I knew I had bag a great image, I thanked the Sea Captain as I’ve now called him, showed him the image and let him travel the rest of the trip in peace. I’m considering entering this in the portrait section of the Real Photography compeition, while it may be a little unconventional, it’s one of my favourite portraits (and most the others my wife won’t let me post as they are pictures of her).

  • This man favoured central Odessa and our paths crossed more than once during my stay there. This morning, however, I couldn’t resist sneaking a shot as he snoozed there on his bench. I’m very glad I did as he shaved off that magnificent beard no more than a week later… If you like what you see, please feel free to add me to your watchlist. Oh, and should you wish to see more, clicking on an image below will take you to its viewing page. Enjoy!

  • 2nd Place in the Digital Creatures Challenge for the Images and Ideas Group / / Yet another trip down memory lane with photographs belonging to my mother and father recently found in an old shoebox in the attic. / This handsome chap was actually Captain Burchell “Bud” Grevyburg. A highly decorated Spitfire pilot during the second World War, he saw action over the Pacific but unfortunately received a rather nasty wound to the groin which saw him retired from service, both during the war and ummm….lets just say…in a more permanent manner. / He became part of our extended family in his later years due to his association with my Aunt Lemmy. / At first he was a major sponsor and collector of her artworks. Later, we suspect they became romantically involved. Although it came as a shock to the family, Aunt Lemmy’s eccentric nature (read that as pure madness) and the fact that The Captain was legally blind and almost totally deaf helped explain the liaison. / I remember him as a rather mulish character, who always wore a pin stripe suit, no matter what the occasion. He had a proud military bearing and absolutely saw everything in black and white. He was actually quite stubborn. / His most outrageous feature, and the one that had us kids falling about in hysterics was his raucous laugh, rather like a donkey braying. During evenings spent playing poker and smoking cigars with my Cousin Frank and Great Uncle Leo we would lie in bed listening to the muffled sounds coming from the sitting room. Once The Captain started laughing his crazy horse like laugh, it would signal an all out giggle frenzy to my cousins and I. We got in to soo.. much trouble and endured a few good ‘paddy whacks’ but boy, it was worth it!!!

  • This is a gift for my dear ZOMBIE and the GRINDHOUSE group. A portrait of Captain Spaulding. 24×30 cm / Acrylics, Gouache & Watercolours on canvas board / Full view please Captain Spaulding was born on April 13, 1918 in Ruggsville, Texas with the name Johnny Lee Johns. He spent a small part of his childhood in the Ruggsville County home for orphaned boys until being adopted by a black family. Johnny Lee would soon grow very close to his adoptive brother Charlie. Johnny Lee developed an interest in sideshow deformities and violent crime photography, foreshadowing his Captain Spaulding persona. He began his murder spree as Mr. Ding Dong a Bo-Bo using his clown character’s name. Charlie would refer to him as Cutter after Johnny Lee stabbed a man to death, which he would take as his name. Around the fall of 1947, Cutter met Mother Firefly, who at the time took the alias Eve Wilson. She already had two children of her own, Rufus and Tiny. Cutter lived with Eve Wilson, even raising their daughter Vera Ellen together. During the summer of 1965, Otis B. Driftwood, wandered into Ruggsville County. He and Otis quickly became close companions and rivals. The two would often fight for control of the family. Otis was asked to live with the family; whom Otis called The Fireflys and it was he who also nicknamed Cutter, Captain Spaulding. • Tom Uglys and the Captain Cook bridges by David Petranker Strong westerly winds across NSW have generated one of the most spectacular dust storms in the history of Sydney according to the Weather Channel. An orange haze has covered the city, reducing visibility, causing transport problems and creating health concerns for those with respiratory problems. “This is the biggest dust storm I have ever seen in Sydney,” says Dick Whitaker, senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel with more than 40 years of meteorological experience. “The last dust storm to hit Sydney was in October 2002 but it was nowhere as big as the one we are seeing today.” “The storm is as a consequence of an extended period of strong winds and very dry conditions over western NSW. We are looking at it gradually improving later this morning to early afternoon but it should remain hazy all day.” Leader readers have been quick to grab the abundance of photo opportunities this morning. Sydney woke to the red haze as dust blown in from western NSW caused havoc. All citybound lanes on the M5 East tunnel were closed earlier this morning while ferries were cancelled and some trains were delayed. Even a horse racing meeting at Canterbury Park racecourse had to be cancelled today. Passengers at Sydney Airport were told to expect significant delays and motorists should take extra care throughout the day because of harsh weather conditions. Sutherland SES spokesman John Gonzalez said volunteers had taken away fallen trees at Kareela and Menai. Matt Kirby at Kogarah SES said his team removed trees at Hurstville, Blakehurst and Rockdale. Primary schools in St George and Sutherland Shire are also taking precautions, keeping children in classrooms until the dust settles. Students from Our Lady of Fatima Primary School at Caringbah, were among many advised by teachers to remain inside with the windows closed. http://www.theleader.com.au/news/local/news/general/dust-storm-loses-puff/1631494.aspx
