Canon EOS 20D, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, Focal Length: 10mm, Aperture: f/3.5, Exposure: 10min, ISO100 I spent a cold March evening walking around the Yosemite Valley floor looking for a good spot to compose a decent timelapse photo before settling on this spot where the Northern celestial pole was directly behind the prow of El Capitan. There was almost a full moon that night putting out so much light that any exposures longer than about 15 minutes resulted in a whiteout. I came up with this image after spending about an hour experimenting with different ISO, exposure and aperture settings. / / To see more night images of Yosemite Valley, click on the images below: / / / / / /

Another shot of Yosemite Valley from the valley floor on a cold, clear night in early spring. In all of the night landscapes I have taken, I have been continually amazed at the amount of detail that the camera is able to capture provided there is some light and an appropriate exposure duration. Canon EOS 20D, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, Focal Length: 15mm, Aperture: f/4, Exposure: 8 min; ISO100

El Capitan is a 3,000-foot vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park. The granite monolith is one of the world’s favorite challenges for rock climbers. On my first trip to Yosemite I arrived near sunset. Twilight had already hit the valley. By chance we headed up a mountain to find more light, and happened on this incredible view of El Capitan reflecting the setting sun. I took several dozen photos as the sun continued to set and this one is the best. I went to the same spot on future trips to Yosemite, but this scene never happened again.

One of the images from my “Yosemite By Night” composition. This shot was taken from outside the Wawona Tunnel on the Highway 41 entrance to Yosemite Valley at about 10:30pm. I had about three attempts before getting this shot with the previous efforts being spoiled by vehicles driving up behind me with high beams on which resulted in the closest treetops in the foreground being overexposed and the rest of the image underexposed. It was great to be able to capture almost all of the key icons of Yosemite Valley in one shot at night – El Capitan on the left and the three Cathedral Rocks on the right with Bridalveil Falls in front of them. Sentinel Rock, Glacier Point and Half Dome can also be seen further down the valley in the background. Canon EOS 20D, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, Focal Length: 22mm, Aperture: f/4.5, Exposure: 7.5 min, ISO100
