i’ve just moved into a new house. my landlady is baba tanya. (baba is short for babushka- grandma in russian) when i was introduced to baba tanya, i assumed her to be a medium to heavy drinker in her fifties. turns out she’s a light drinker in her late seventies- the cellar is full to the brim with bottles of homemade raspberry wine and apple cider, which keeps her going. i am assured a neighbouring house has a still producing crystal clear ‘samogon’ – home made vodka, which she doesn’t touch, except on holidays. this is the sort of place where holidays are pretty regular. my new space is 8 square metres behind a curtain on a wooden verandah built onto a hundred year old log house, sloping about five degrees to the south. to be honest, it smells of cat piss, which i’m trying to address with agrabathi and citronella. in my ‘space’ (a ‘room’ has four walls and a door- i have three walls, a wardrobe and a curtain.) there is an ancient wooden table, an ancient wooden bed and a thick woolen carpet. the wall is lined with rotting soviet era books and a large tatty oil of a man trying to shoot a constipated bear. rustic is too refined a word. its costing me 275 euros a month, including cooking and laundry and conversation. a lot of conversation. although this might seem expensive, average price of land round here is about the same as monaco. i have to type quietly. on the other side of my curtain a woman, baba lida, is sleeping. she was born here, in this house, 80 years ago. inside the house, baba liza is also sleeping. she was born here 82 years ago. i don’t think baba tanya ever sleeps. she’s too busy arranging the sinister children’s dolls which decorate every corner of the house. the house itself has full amenities, both inside and out. the inside amenites are perfectly adequate- but the sisters seem keener on the outdoor variants- a brand new ‘fitted’ plastic shower cubicle in a wooden hut at the end of the farmstead, fired by a cast iron stove- surely one of the most remarkable engineering visions of the 21st century. just beyond it is the external ‘summer toilet’, which looks remarkable indian to me. the half hectare of land baba tanya tends tends to with her octogenarian sisters bears all the potatoes, tomatoes, apples, pears, raspberries, dill, cucumbers, cabbages, peppers and onions that they need to live without having to worry too much about the green grocer. their ten chickens are in an apparently lazy mood, producing a meagre three to four eggs a day, compared to the 8-10 peak in mid winter. baba tanya’s not too happy about this, but the chickens don’t seem to care. baba tanya’s not too pleased with pirate either. pirate is a dog- an irish wolfhound. baba tanya saved pirate from being put down as a pup for being a runt (he’s more prince naseem hamed than george foreman), and she doesn’t think her kindness has been repayed in kind. the problem is pirate likes biting. the first thing to present themselves to me upon arrival were his snarling jaws snapping from under the gate, the teeth of his lower right jaw conspicuous by their absolute absence. i asked baba tanya about this over a glass of red wine (mine) and a slice of salted fish (hers) this evening. she recalled how once a neighbour had bought a new car- a lada zhiguli model seven- and pirate took such dislike to it that he tried biting out its headlights. headlights are made of glass. thus the missing teeth. baba tanya is almost as angry at the unscrupulous rise in cost of the public transport system in recent years as she is about the unscrupulous rise in compensation demands pirate’s victims have started to make- where once twenty or thirty rubles (up to a dollar) were adequate to hush up a light to gentle mauling, a hundred or even a hundred and fifty (up to five dollars) are now expected- an excellent indicator of the detrimental effect of the capitalist vibe in russia plying pressure on the pockets of pensioners. this afternoon i gave pirate two sausages, in an advised act of friendship. it worked. now he stands very close and stares at me expectantly, and i’m a little bit worried he’ll bite me if i don’t give him more. but on the whole, according to baba tanya, life is good. the water is especially good apparently, as it is on the same main as vladimir vladimirovich putin’s palace, the back wall of which dominate’s the view at the end of the short leafy road that constitutes the village- and the local authority is very keen to spare the second president of the russian federation the sort of heavy metal contamination the rest of moscow’s population is said to be exposed to. i didn’t ask why, but i suspect it’s because he’s good at judo. I’m considering gently introducing them to smack, then switching them to crack as a ‘remedy’, and then rinsing them of their little house. The land’s worth about 2 million. Do you have a better idea?

This year is Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, and I’ve signed on to be a volunteer with the Culture Company. This means that, with work commitments as well, I am finding that I don’t have too much time free for photography and RB at the moment. / / So, just to say, I’ve not abandoned you, my RB friends….. I’m just going to be slightly less visible over next few months, but still involved with the NW Group hosting, and still looking-in regularly and keeping in-touch as much as possible. / / Dave /

Autumn is an ideal time to travel leisurely by car in eastern Australia with temperatures being mild and the days generally calm. Recently had the pleasure of a 2300 kilometre road trip to capture autumn images in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Having never embarked on a specific autumn photographic journey before, it was an experience that I’d like to highly recommend to Australians and visitors to Australia. Most visitors to Australia follow the well-worn coastal routes, but to see the best of autumn in Australia, you generally need to travel inland for the amazing colours, scenery and magical light that exists during April/May. Trust you enjoy this small sample of autumn images taken in Australia during late April and early May 2008. All autumn images for sale at Redbubble Cheers folks. / Bright – Victoria / Mount Buffalo – Victoria / National Carillon – Canberra, Australian Capital Territory / Bega – New South Wales / Cann River Church – Victoria

Thoughts of Mao The following are from speeches made by Mao Zedong. Although the speeches were about production etc. I think the Chinese government has forgotten these phrases. I had previously posted them in my writing, under Chinas’ Forgotten Self, and Thoughts of Mao; but I think they probably should be in my journal instead. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- From a speech January 18th 1961. “When rigid bureaucrats pay no attention to whether people live or die, then no matter how they are subjectively, they are in fact the allies of the counter revolution. ...If you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to hold up your head….” From a Speech titled “ Strive to Learn From Each Other and Don’t Stick ( to ) the Beaten Track and be Complacent “ Dec 13th 1963 ( Peking Review Nos 37-38 sept ) “ … However, many comrades at the central and local levels find it hard. / They find it hard to shake of their customary metaphysical way of thinking. By metaphysics is meant the denial of the unity of opposites and the struggle of opposites in things ( the method of one dividing into two ), the denial of the truth that under given conditions two contradictory things that stand in opposition transform themselves into each other and turn into their opposite. Metaphysics also finds expression in the following – to stick to the beaten track, to be conceited and complacent, to notice only achievements and not shortcomings, to welcome praise and not criticism, to be unwilling to critise oneself ( to apply the method of one dividing into two to oneself ) and, worse still, to be afraid of being critised by others. “ ___________ / I personally feel that not only China and the Communist system, but the Western Capitalist system has done exactly that, changed into its’ opposite. Perhaps not necessarily as a complete change but as a direct consequence of each others opposition they have created rigid structures that in effect go contrary to their doctrine. Both still pushing their system as the way, and still creating poverty and oppression. Communism can be truly democratic and capitalist, and provide for every member of the society; but it doesn’t. Western Democratic Capitalism can be truly communal and give true democracy, representation of the electorate by the electorate, and provide freedom and prosperity for every member of the society, but it doesn’t. Both systems could provide for individual reward for effort, and still provide for those unable to excel beyond the common or norm. Today in both systems, poverty, hunger, exploitation and usury, are tolerated…. Why ???? Please do not assume that anyone who has put me on their watch list, of favourited any of my work, is of the same opinion as myself, in the above, or anything else.

What Am I Doing Right?: The Indecipherable Ways of Recognition

I’ve been on Red Bubble a short while now. I love the service and the ability to use it. I am grateful that some intelligent folks had the insight and business acumen to establish this community. If it had depended on my wherewithal the site wouldn’t exist. So a big thanks for the effort and the accomplishment. My personal artistic goal is to disperse as much beauty into the world as I can. Depicting the extraordinary nature of nature is my major intention. I am not yet versed in what it takes to get people to see your work. I don’t know if it is the tags I use or just a general lacking in descriptive adjectives and nouns to convey the desire to view my “art”. I have participated in praising other’s work. That is easy because so much of it is really wonderful. I try to find pieces that are a “little off the beaten track” and not as viewed. I share my praise with the artist who is getting less tangible appreciation. I make a point of returning the favor of praise to those who have been kind to me. It is nice to praise someone with a boat load of comments, but pretty soon your comment just becomes a bit of overkill. I can identify with a good artist who remains unseen. I don’t consider myself an artistic genius. Consider how overlooked Van Gogh was during his life. Now consider how over-appreciated Thomas Kincaid has become. There must be a happy medium somewhere in between for a creative fellow like me. (Got any input on that?) I have gotten quite a bit of very generous praise from some very talented people. I am humbled by that. But, I think my stuff is good enough to sell as cards and prints, and save for some true and loyal friends, that hasn’t yet happened. Maybe it is too early. But I think not. I have noticed that a few of those photographers that I watch on a regular basis have so many comments attached to their works that it takes multiple pages to house them all. I have had pictures up for almost two months that not one soul has viewed let alone commented on or marked as a favorite. That is very disheartening. Still, I plug away hoping I will discover the magic behind being seen and, perhaps selling work as well. I try to keep a positive thought in the direction of prosperity attached to art. There are so many talented people showing their work here that it seems a daunting task trying to stand beside them and be noticed. I believe my work is good (Maybe I’m deluded! LOL), but short of hiring an agent and exhibiting in the real time and space of a physical gallery, I am curious as to how I can become one of those artists who garner appreciation for every effort they post. If you have somehow managed to find this and read it and you are in on the means to achieve this goal, please take the time to share it with me. I’m not a hog for personal attention, but it would be cool to be noticed. Thanks, / Greg

Thank you to the people who made suggestions about a possible title for a recent picture of slightly ramshackle hut on the kings dock in Liverpool. Having been given some good ideas and taking one suggestion up “the leaning tower of Liverpool” I have decided to go with “Farewell”, this describes how I feel about all that is a little shabby being taken over by the new and shiney in the city, after all, it was the shabby I liked most when I first visited Liverpool.

The only way in which the world we live in is improved, is when we as a whole do things in a positive way. That requires that we set aside the differences we have with one another, and work together toward a common good. Wealth spread throughout all levels of society enables more people to buy things that enhance their lives. If wealth is concentrated in too small of a group, the economy has to shrink due to the reduced demand for goods. When the only things most people spend money on are the necessities like food, shelter, and transportation, the economy collapses. When more wealth is placed in the hands of the middle class, due to the shear volume of people in it, the economy is given the chance to grow. If you concentrate large amounts of money into the hands of very few people, there is absolutely no way they can ever spend or invest it in a way that enlarges the economy. As the demand for consumer goods falls, so does the employment rate. It wouldn’t be productive to keep making or selling things to people that can’t afford them. In order to keep people buying, artificial means of buying power are put forth (credit cards). The simple act of extending credit inflates a bubble which requires careful observation and care otherwise the bubble will burst. The people that think the markets should be free running and can police themselves, are as smart as a person that drills a hole int he bottom of his rowboat so he won’t have to bail it. We have had 8 years of that kind of thinking. It has done wonders for us. Deregulation of the banks took away the watchful eye that prevented over inflation of the balloon our economy had become. The main force for deregulation in the Senate, is now running for President. He and his running mate have claimed they will change things. Their idea for change is even less regulation by the government. That is not letting the fox in the hen house, that is taking down the walls of it and cutting holes in the perimeter fence as well. John McCain is very proud of his deregulation record! True change would be the recognition that our economy is driven by a robust middle class that has disposable income. When you increase the amount of money in the hands of lots of people that are more likely to spend it, everyone benefits. Which benefits the country better, a $90,000 car 2 customers can afford, or a $20,000 car 98 customers can afford. If you vote using your head and wallet, the only viable choice is Obama!

The beguiling grip of a bastard son.

I can’t tell you anything you don’t already know – not about the meaning of life or what may become of the lot of us all. You’ve all come to this conclusion at least once in your life just as you all have had trails to endure and moments to move forward from. Do we ever really learn though? I’m not so sure. I can’t help but want to kick the legs out from underneath every major head that had a role in what has become of this world. Although I’m sure that would leave me with legs just as busy and destructive as all of theirs. It’s thoughts like these that got us to this point in the first place. We all share a red hand and a witness in this. We really have nothing else to blame for what we have to account for: The lack of natural resources. / The lack of drinkable water. / The lack of fossil fuels. / The lack of ozone left lingering within our atmosphere. / The lack of peace between all countries. Our ability to learn and retain information has led to an ignorant reign followed by an even more stubborn flock. It has aided in an abundant amount of arms being dealth within and outside the walls of trackable economy. It has helped formulate the staggering plights and plans of countries whose greatest concerns involve expansion of reach while preserving their traditional courses or action. Not adjusting or adopting their beliefs in light of any new circumstances along the way, but to spread the same ignorance that swept them over long ago. A constant campaign to not only prove, but show by force that there is only one efficient and right way to go about these things. It’s almost as if we forgot what it meant to die. There’s no telling just how far we may go. What if someone or a group of people caught onto it all long ago? Caught on that the human race was a selfish and destructive one? Perhaps they witnessed for the first time what the hands of many men can do and the result was one they had not yet seen before. Death. They then, assembled their thoughts and created another arm in which to control the limitless possibilities of the masses and aid the governing arm. What if this was organized religion? What if your “word of God” was doctored and nursed by human hands, chisels and stone tablets to give faith to those who may revolt in fear? Could it all have been a testament to acknowledge the presence of death while installing hope into the hearts and minds of those not so easily touched by the hands of dictatorship? Places of worship generating their own high level of priority among the people and further distracting them from the cold truths that lay in the ground before them. The flock of man indirectly steered to a loyal, more fulfilled train of thought. Now, is this possibility necessarily a bad thing? Personally, I don’t think so. I’ve come to consider that if this group of people truly existed, they were trying to save us from ourselves. “God’s in his heavens, all is right in the world.“ I’m not going to focus on my standpoint on organized religion too much because you can oddly enough, find an extension to this in “Oh, the adherents.” (If you actually stop reading this here and go to that passage and then come back to this point, you may get more out of this, if anything.) It’s a shame to think, that even if that were to be the case, it quickly manages to lose it’s illusive qualities when both hands clasped together in thought over how to increase the public morale for war. Like I said before though, I can’t tell you anything new. This is why the separation of church and state has been an issue long before Thomas Jefferson ever coined the term in that letter to the Danbury Baptists. I’ve come to think theocracy was just the loss of subtlety in a form of ruling that is as almost as old as time. I don’t blame the Roman Emperors for taking the stabs they did at the rise of Christianity among their people. They may’ve known well enough the true purpose and reach of what was being organized and brought to their palace gates. They had a reason to fear. I’ll say it just as I did before, I can’t tell you anything you don’t already know. Whether it be about the meaning of life or what may become of us, you already know. You’ve already come to this conclusion at least once in your life: We were better off on all fours when didn’t have the spare hands to write declarations of war.

Chicken Little, Democratic Capitalism

I am against any proposal to bail out private capital companies with taxpayer money. / / I am tired of years of following hurry up polices of George Bush into oblivion. The senators are suppose to be the cool voice of the people over the hubris of a few self-serving idiots. They have allowed the vast majority of the American people fail with out regard and allowed harsher bankruptcy laws for the middle class while continuing to fund the Presidents outlandish spending which has impoverished our country, leaders, and children well into the future. Will we let these malpractice corporate leaders leave with millions yet we would strip the spoils of any other person (doctors) or private individuals (tort) for similar impunity (crashing a car into private property) why do we want to bail these criminals. / / They scream socialism in the face of Universal Health Care for Americans, / yet pass a magic wand of applying socialism (no loan but a gift) to corporate cronies and, oh yes, the offshore corporations. In the old Feudal System the first priority was to protect the people inside the walls so you could tax them later, not throw your resources over the moat to your adversary’s. For once I ask them (Senators) to act as leaders and support the reality of capitalism I fought for in Nam, let the system rise or fail based on the market forces not covering the bad judgment of corporate greed. Stop this rush to judgment and someone yell the “King has no cloths”.

2008 Capital of Culture

My visit to Liverpool last weekend taught me two important lessons in relation to photography (both of which I should already know!). First and foremost – never try to combine serious photography with a family trip. I spent the weekend mostly frustrated by the missed opportunities for photography in what is a fantastic city. I was lucky enough to be staying in the regenerated Albert Docks which is a photographer’s dream, but constant haranguing from children conspired to stop me capturing many of the images I could visualise. It is a city which I have only visited twice before in my life: The first time when I was about 9 and had my old Zorki rangefinder camera stolen from the back of my family’s car :-(. The second, a few years later in 1985 with a newly purchased Praktica MTL5, when the regeneration of the Albert Docks had only just started. My recent visit encouraged me to dig out my old B&W negatives of the docks as they were then – my photography has moved on a bit, but here’s a picture of how it used to look. In the time that I had available to me I veered towards monochrome images again (it suits the age of the architecture), but focussed more on semi-abstract compositions like this one. As Liverpool is currently European Capital of Culture there is lots of art around the city – both in galleries and on the street….or even the beach! One of my favourites has to be Anthony Gormley’s Another Place. One hundred iron statues based on the artist’s own body spread out over 3km of the beach in Crosby (just north of Liverpool). One advantage of young children is they tend to wake early, so there was no problem getting there before the sun rose too high in the sky….but my second mistake of the weekend was not checking the tide before arriving – it was too high in most places for the type of image I was after, so I contented myself with the pictures I could capture and hopefully have done the artwork some justice in this image (more to come soon!). I am so impressed with this piece by Anthony Gormley that I have sought out pictures on redbubble to see what imagery others have captured. Here are my favourites: Shadow on the Edge – by Twisted Another Place – by dotcomjohnny Iron Man – by Thelonious No doubt I will be publishing more of my images of Liverpool on redbubble as I get around to editing them, so watch this space….and I hope to visit the city again in the near future – on my own!

Tallest Building in the World, Look Down, 2006 self-release Rhythmic beats provoke pleasurable aortic vibrations that pound parallel with guitars, drums, and a number of enigmatic sounds—streaming polyphonic pulsations from my heart to my toes. The Tallest Building in the World’s debut album, “Look Down,” is an enlightening blend of modern and progressive rock with a hint of cynicism and a mildly lurid cadence. Smooth transitions between songs candied with a rich instrumental variety such as a classical piano or studio produced sounds re-enacting a scratched CD’s bitter skipping condition—add to the appeal of the individual tracks. Thoughtful lyrics also provide a hue of clarity to capitalism’s vicious imprisonment of American lives and vividly describe the duo’s political concerns through detailed lyrical imagery coupled with tremors of mind-blowing musical impacts that blend in effectively with the vocals dark quality. The caliber of the vocals, however, is far less satisfying. Unfortunately, the vocals lack of tone and variability in pitch often slow down the songs—which are consistently plagued by the monotonous tracheal influence. This characteristic obviously stalls the album from reaching instant sensation, but more importantly the vocalists lack of key will hinder future works from sparking national attention. Although this band’s future is not completely distraught—as Isaac continues to find his place vocally and expand his experience with the mic in search of vocal hegemony. Overall, the melodic variety of the tracks, as well as Isaac and Jared’s ability to mesh and experiment with music generates a dominating album with an original and musing sound.
