Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery View overlooking the Mangroves on the way to “Grassy Hill Lookout”, Cooktown, Far North Queensland, Australia. To Read More – Visit: Cape_York_Adventure_-_2008 Sets of Two / Another_View_on_way_to_Grassy_Hill_Lookour Cooktown Cooktown has over two centuries of rich history. It was the site of the first white ‘settlement’ in Australia when Captain James Cook, having accidentally struck the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast north of Cape Tribulation, struggled up the coast and beached the HMS Endeavour on the shores of the Endeavour River. Cook and his crew were to stay on the edge of the Endeavour River from 17 June to 4 August, 1770, the longest time they were to spend at any location in Australia. Grassy Hill Lookout Captain Cook climbed “Grassy Hill Lookout” on several occasions to view the surrounding reefs, allowing him to navigate a safe passage out after repairing his ship. In 1885, a lighthouse was erected after being built and shipped from England. This became an automated lighthouse in 1927. It also served as a base for a radar station in World War II. I highly recommend a visit to “Grassy Hill Lookout” with its 360 degree views of Cooktown, Hopevale and the Coral Sea. 100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of “View to Mangroves – Cooktown” will be donated to “thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk” for the Cancer Council. Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Lighthouse – Grassy Hill, Cooktown, Far North Queensland. 100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of “Lighthouse – Grassy Hill” will be donated to “thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk” for the Cancer Council. Please check out Michael Mitchell’s website thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk In July 1770 Captain Cook`s journal documents “Grassy Hill” as the site on which he stood to survey the ocean for a passage between the reefs for his ship. In 1886 a lighthouse marking the safe passage to the port was erected on this spot, with a lighthouse keeper`s cottage attached. The lighthouse lantern was prefabricated and arrived on board the New Guinea via Batavia in 1885. / It was initially manned and lit by kerosene. The lighthouse keeper also maintained a signal staff to announce the arrival of shipping and to signal the noon hour to the town by dropping a time ball. The original light source and associated equipment were replaced when the operation of the lighthouse was changed from manned to automatic in 1927. / The cottage and signal staff may have been removed at this time. During the period of the Palmer gold rush the lighthouse became a significant landmark for the shipping which made Cooktown a bustling and prosperous commercial port. In 1913 a radio station, VIC was erected on a spur of the hill to permit radio contact with shipping, superseding the flag and the lithograph previously used. During 1942-45 a radar station flanked by defensive installations was erected on the hill, but was dismantled and removed after the war. In 1970 a sandstone cairn was placed on the crest to commemorate the bi-centenary of Cook`s survey. / / The lighthouse is approximately 6m high, set on a concrete base and constructed of corrugated iron on a timber frame. It is conical in form, tapering to a balcony supported on timber brackets. Above the balcony the structure becomes cylindrical in shape and is capped with a hemispherical dome. Small rectangular windows are let into the conical section. It has standard lantern and beam projection apparatus. The light source is now an open flame acetylene gas burner.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery The tail end of a Bristol Beaufort left to rust away near Bamaga, Cape York Peninsula, Far North Queensland. The Bristol Type 152 Beaufort was a large torpedo bomber designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and developed from the earlier Blenheim light bomber. A light bomber is a military bomber aircraft which, when compared to other bombers, is relatively small and fast. Beauforts were most widely used, until the end of the war, by the Royal Australian Air Force in the Pacific theatre. Most of these planes were manufactured under licence in Australia. Beauforts also saw service with the Royal Air Force’s Coastal Command – including Commonwealth squadrons serving with the RAF – and then the Fleet Air Arm from 1940, until they were withdrawn in 1944. Please check out Michael Mitchell’s website thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk Hibiscus…from Greek, hibiskos, the marsh mallow, a malvaceous plant that grows in marshy conditions. / meraukensis… reference to the Merauk area in New Guinea where the type specimen was collected Found in woodlands in tropical areas of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Also occurs in islands to the north of Australia. Hibiscus meraukensis is a small to medium annual shrub up to about 2 metres in height. Plants appears during the tropical wet season and die off during the following dry season. The leaves are hairy when young and quite large, up to 180 mm long by 100 mm wide. The flowers are large, up to 100 mm in diameter of typical hibiscus shape and range in colour from white through to pink or mauve. In common with most Hibiscus species, the individual flowers last only 1-2 days but new flowers continue to open over a long period, generally in autumn. The flowers are followed by seed capsules containing a number of seeds. H.meraukensis has received only limited cultivation and is not well known even among native plant enthusiasts. It is an attractive and quick growing species for tropical and sub-tropical climates and, although usually an annual, it can be readily propagated so that plants are always available in the garden. Its performance is untested in temperate areas but should perform well in a warm position such as against a brick or stone wall where heat is retained in the structure. It prefers full sun and moist, well drained soils.
