THE SUBJECT: / There were more than orchids on display and these Kalanchoes were among the other plants adding their colour and texture. THE LOCATION: / The Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club was invited to set up an exhibition of floral photography at the Hastings River Orchid Society’s 2007 Orchid and Visual Crafts Show held at the Wauchope Returned Soldiers League Club in Wauchope, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘Kalanchoe Caper’: / My club president and myself set up, manned and packed up our exhibition of fifty eight mounted prints over the two day exhibition. / This was a golden opportunity for any keen photographer so my mate and I took full advantage of the event to hone our skills on the many varieties of orchids and other plants on display. / Eventually our photographs will be burned onto a CD and presented to the orchid society as a record for their members and I have been asked to produce a few prints as well. / I used the ambient light of our exhibition room which consisted of diffused daylight flooding in across from my left and strong, diffused tungsten lights in the ceiling. / I used my White Balance Lens Cap to set the Custom White Balance as this rendered the best natural colours. / We were able to take the plants from the exhibition and set them up on a low bench with an off white cotton backdrop. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1.5sec, ISO80, Manual focus, Tripod, Timer. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS3. A photograph of a caper white butterfly which has been rendered as a watercolour painting.
My golden lab, Caper, loves the snow. I took this pic of him today, while out on our walk. He’s 13 years old and this might be his last winter because his hips are really bad and he’s in a lot of pain. Even so, when out walking, he’s the happiest dog in the world, forgetting all about his pain. :)
This is my golden lab x, Caper, having fun in the snow the other day. I love this pic because he just looks so happy. He’s very old- 13 years old- and he has a lot of hip problems but he still finds the energy to take his daily walks with me. :) I love him so much, and this reminds me that even old dogs have some puppy left in them.

Which is about the communal abstract chatter that one encounters when in amongst a crowd of like-minded personalities. / I have chosen not to emphasize the precise detail of each bird but rather their general shape as they caper around, to give the impression of constant movement. The Caper – Capparis spinosa, is well known in the Mediterranean region for its edible bud (and fruit) marketed under the name of Caper Berry, which is usually consumed pickled. It grows quite freely in the wild countryside especially in rocky regions. Capers are a distinctive ingredient in Southern Italian, Sicilian and Maltese cooking. They are used in Salads, Pizzas, Meat and Fish dishes. Examples of uses in Italian cousine are Chicken Piccata, and Salsa Puttanesca. They are also used in most Fish Sauces and to garnish Fish Dishes. Capers are also used with cold Smoked Salmon, Cured Salmon and occasionally as a substitute for Olives to garnish a Martini.
I only became aware of the delicate beauty of the caper flowers this year as I am normally in England during the summer months and I couldn’t resist taking a closer look.
Caper Whites (Belenois java) tend to live west of the Great Dividing Range in Australia but have complex patterns of migration and are a very common butterfly. Hart’s Range, Northern Territory, Australia.
Driving along the quayside in Marsa, Malta, just past Bezzina’s Ship Repair Yard, I happened to spot this old Lifeboat by the side od the road. What drew me to it was not the actual boat itself but the spots of sunlight on the boat and on the rocks above it. The Caper bushes growing from crevises in the rock and hanging down added some colourful features to the scene, as did the fennel stalks pointing upwards towards the sky. On top of the boat, jutting out from the rock-face is a small niche housing a statue of the Blessed Virgin with Baby Jesus in her arms. A probable votive offering from a sailor or crew who found safety in the harbour from a violent storm or during the War.

Autumn colors and squirrels seem to go together as these little creatures look for nuts and goodies to store for the winter. The background image was taken at Boulder City in the Mill Creek area in Prospect, Oregon. The foreground yellow leaves and the squirrel were added as composites.
