  • Franschhoek, Western Cape, South Africa was founded in 1688 by a large group of French huguenots who brought with them their native culture and knowledge of food and wine. It’s now described as the food and wine heartland of the country. / Bordered by mountains and gorgeous scenery, I had just a few minutes here to take some shots!

  • Sometimes the sun has not been given enough time to go down in style. It is chased out of the sky, its light butchered by dark featureless and easy to forget clouds. Not this evening though. In such a wonderful setting and with all the time in the world, at its own pace, it gently covered the whole universe, material and the other one, with its pink warm residue leaving you with an overwhelming feeling of relief and joy. It is often hard to imagine a place like this for us city slickers, with the clock meaningless, space limitless, and your soul miles away from the tension and stress, the main culprits behind the structural damage of our emotional self. Later that night I was carried through sleep on a cushion of wonderful dreams until the sun made its usual roundtrip. Does this surprise you?

  • I set the alarm for 3am and headed out to the coast to catch a sunrise. / / This is the lighthouse at CapeSpear, Newfoundland. It is the most easterly point in North America. So while everyone else was sleeping I was the very first person in North America to see this sunrise… how cool is that! / / The rock that makes the cliffs that the lighthouse sits on reminded me of a martian landscape… / / Settings & Gear Used / / Manual Exposure / Shutter Speed: 10 seconds / Apeture: 16 / ISO: 100 / Focal Length: 22mm / / Canon 400D / Canon 10-22 lens / Manfrotto 055XProB Tripod / Manfrotto 222 Joystick / Cable Release / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / / /

  • My original home, Cape Breton Island, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Not just my opinion, but that of many world-famous travelers and publications. I’ve assembled 12 of my own images that I hope will give you some idea of the scenery of this lovely island.I’ve chosen places that are a little off the beaten path, but still easily accessible by car, if you go for a visit. Any of them are also available as separate prints.

  • Now that Fall is here in Canada, here’s a bit of bright colour to show off the season. My favourite place for this sort of thing is Cape Breton Highlands National Park, in Nova Scotia, where fall brings unbelievable hills and valleys of every shade of red, yellow, orange and brown. This little scene was taken near Ingonish Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Park. October 2005, Sony DSCF828 camera

  • In this case, it’s Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which occupies the northern section of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. The road is the Cabot Trail, which encircles the same part of the island and provides access to the Park and all the coastal communities along the way. The Trail was named for Jon Cabot who landed either here or in Newfoundland (some debate about that) in 1497. This view was taken on the Trail just north of the village of Cheticamp, on the west coast of the island, heading North. The water is the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on a lovely calm day. In the distance, the Trail winds up along the slopes of Cap Rouge, the first of the many headlands that provide travelers with hundreds of scenic views of ocean, hills, valleys, streams and a chance to drive carefully as the trail has some rather wild switchbacks along the way. / Autumn leaves were just starting to turn, and when they do, the Highlands provide scenes of color which are almost unbelievable. / Since I was born and raised on Cape Breton, it’s still the place I call HOME. / Taken Late September 2006 with a Sony DSCF828 camera.
