Photo of Cape Otway Lighthouse, which is off the great Ocean Road in Victoria.

An edit of a photo i took at Cape Otway Lighthouse just of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road in Australia a few months ago on the 28th of February 2008. HDR’d in Photomatix from one RAW file . Found a pic of some birds i took at Elwood Beach a while ago and added them in Photoshop. Some tweaking was also done in Lightroom including the black and white conversion and above is the end result. The Lighthouse is just one of many beautiful attractions in the Great Otway National Park. CAPE Otway Lightstation is the oldest, surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. The light, which has been in continuous operation since 1848, is perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide. For thousands of immigrants, after many months at sea, Cape Otway was their first sight of land after leaving Europe. For those interested this is the original image: Click here for my other images of Victoria This is what it would look like as a medium mounted print with my details:

The Cape Otway lighthouse, at the bottom of Cape Otway, off the Great Ocean Road in western Victoria (Australia). See this website for more historical information about it: http://www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/VIC/Cape%20Otway/Cape%20Otway.htm After posting this image for critique on DSLRUsers.com (a photo forum I frequent), a couple of people suggested a wider crop and to perhaps lighten the image a bit. I did so, and have received favourable response. As such I have replaced the original that was here with the reworked image.

A rough day on the beach in Byron Bay does not deter the keen surfers from getting a peice of the action. Notice the rays of sunlight coming through the clouds down towards the people entering the surf.

Fort Amherst is located at the entrance of St. John’s Harbor opposite Signal Hill across the Narrows’. The Fort was built in the 1770’s to defend the entrance of the Narrows’. Gun placements were used at The Fort during WWII to protect the harbor from German U-boats. In 1813 a lighthouse was built at Fort Amherst and was to be the first permanent lighthouse established in Newfoundland. It operated until 1835 but was then replaced by a new structure in 1852, which was demolished in the early 1950’s to make way for the new lighthouse which is seen today. / More in this series / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

The Cape Spear Lighthouse has been a guiding beacon for sailors since the mid 1800’s. This was only the second light to offer aid along any of Newfoundland’s rocky coasts, even though the island had at the time been populated for two centuries. / During the Second World War, Cape Spear took on a whole new significance. German submarines and raiders off the coast of the Island posed a considerable threat. A coastal defence battery, equipped with two 10” guns was constructed here to protect the entrance to St. John’s Harbor. The gun emplacements were built at the tip of the Cape and connected by underground passages to magazine and equipment rooms. From 1941 to 1945, troops were stationed here. With the end of hostilities in 1945, most of the fortifications were demolished but the gun emplacements stand as a sombre reminder of that important period in our military history / Visitors to Cape Spear in the spring and summer months should watch for whales, icebergs, and seabirds. / / Matted Print / / / / / More in this series / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /

Rain rolls in on Bass Straight behind the lighthouse at Cape Otway as the sun rises on this wondeful stucture. / We stayed in the assistant light keepers house for 2 nights overlooking the light house and were constantly amazed at the rapid change in weather conditions. / At sunrise the lighthouse was bathed in warm sunrise light, yet rain was rapidly approaching from behind on Bass Straight….an awesome sight and experience.
