The Cape Otway lighthouse, at the bottom of Cape Otway, off the Great Ocean Road in western Victoria (Australia). See this website for more historical information about it: http://www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/VIC/Cape%20Otway/Cape%20Otway.htm After posting this image for critique on DSLRUsers.com (a photo forum I frequent), a couple of people suggested a wider crop and to perhaps lighten the image a bit. I did so, and have received favourable response. As such I have replaced the original that was here with the reworked image.

I kept returning to this spot, night after night, sometimes it was raining or misty and other nights were simply ideal though a tad chilly … This spectacular natural rock arch, sculpted by weathering and erosion from the sea over thousands of years is well worth visiting. Here you can also observe a colony of New Zealand Fur-seals as they feed, swim and laze on the shore platform below. If you cannot see them you can sure smell them ! I set the alarm for 3am and headed out to the coast to catch a sunrise. / / This is the lighthouse at CapeSpear, Newfoundland. It is the most easterly point in North America. The Petrified Forest, Cape Bridgewater, Victoria, Australia. There are a number of theories about how this surreal landscape of calcified sediment was formed. One of these is that a forest was smothered by a large sand dune and water seeping down through the sand formed a crust of sandstone on the outside of the tree trunks. This process decayed the organic matter, leaving behind the ‘petrified trunks’. Another theory says that they are Rhizoconcretions-calcrete structures caused by the filling of hollows in an ancient sand dune system. The close spacing between them suggests to me that they were not trees – but an ancient petrified forest sounds more romantic and the name has become entrenched over time perpetuating perhaps a myth.
