  • Tesselated Twilight
    by DawsonImages

    US$4.99–US$133.00

A bit of color and light over the odd rock formations known as the tesselated pavement along the Tasman PEninsula. The Tessellated Pavement is an inter-tidal rock platform – a common enough coastal landform. But here an unusual set of geological circumstances have resulted in a rare landform. The flat-lying siltstone was cracked by stresses in the Earth’s crust, roughly between 160 million years ago and 60 million years ago. The resulting cracks (joints) are seen as three main sets, one aligned to the north- northeast, a second to the east-northeast and the third to the north-northwest. This jointing, exaggerated by processes of erosion, has created the ‘tiled’ appearance. When seawater covers the rock platform, fragments of rock are carried away. Near the seaward edge of the platform, sand is the main cause of the erosion. When combined with wave action the erosional process causes ‘loaf’ or ‘pan’ formations.

  • Sun and Stone
    by Sam Sneddon

    US$4.28–US$114.00

After shooting the early light of the morning down at Cape Schanck I thought I’d take a quick shot of the sun light reflecting off the large boulders in this little cove. I love the warm colours and shapes of wet boulders in the sun. If you ever go down to this place when the tied is high and the weather a little on the wild side, the massive waves that come crashing in to this little space throw these boulders around making an awesome rumbling sound. A must see if you live close enough to the Mornington Peninsula.

  • Sunset over Cape Town
    by Avril Brand

    US$3.71–US$98.80

Oils on canvas. Cape Town, the city of my birth. Dusk falling and the lights are coming on under the shadow of the great mountain where I was born. When the ‘table cloth’ forms over the mountain, Van Hunks and the old devil are smoking their pipes like crazy in a never ending competition and the cloth of cloud falls over the table like a waterfall. (old legend). The sky is clear over the mountain here today and the sea becomes black and purple as the light shifts. The view is from Blauwberg Strand. Original oil painting is 30×40 inches. • Dawn this morning on my favorite island. I am visiting Cape Breton for the Celtic Colours International Festival. So far I have seen two wonderful shows, Pipers’ Ceilidh at St Ann’s Gaelic College with pipers from Scotland, Cape Breton, and Cuba and opening night show Common Ground: A Celtic Journey featuring Carlos Nunez from Spain as well as many musicians from Cape Breton, Scotland, Ireland, and Cuba (I guess there are celtic roots there too!). Tonight’s show is Anull gu Aiseag Mhira (Over to Mira Ferry). Inverness Gaelic Choir will be there from Scotland and Cape Breton’s own – Mary Jane Lamond, Wendy MacIsaac, Mairi Rankin, and Patrick Gillis. But the scenery….... is out of this world, and I know I can not do it justice!

  • Grim Reaper – noun / the personification of death. [Origin: 1925–30] Old Slavic tribes viewed Death as a woman in white clothes, with a never-fading green sprout in her hand. The touch of the sprout would put a human to an everlasting sleep. This image survived Christianization well into the Middle Ages, only being replaced by the more traditional European image of a walking skeleton as late as in the 15th century. Death as a sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of recorded history. In Western cultures, death is usually given the name, the “Grim Reaper”, and shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe, and wearing a midnight black gown, robe or cloak with a hood, or sometimes, a white burial shroud. Usually when portrayed in the black-hooded gown, only his eyes can be seen.
