I wish I had wings so that I could fly like an eagle to the highest points upon the earth and dip into the lowest realms to see all the beauty of this magnificent world we live in. Collaboration with Marvin Collins image of a Hawk “Surveying His Domain” and my image “Grand Canyon – Afternoon”. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For those of you who are familiar with Marvin’s magnificent world of birds, this is a collaboration with one of my favorites of Marvin’s combined with on of my Grand Canyon captures. I am in awe of Marvin’s wonderful bird photography. I wanted to see this one against a backdrop that would enhance both images for a perfect marriage of photographic work of two artist’s images captured in Arizona, USA. Marvin’s fabulous image…Shot in Marana AZ “Surveying His Domain” I combined Marvin’s image with my Grand Canyon – Afternoon shot taken a few months ago on my first trip ever to see this wonderful natural wonder of the world “Grand Canyon – Afternoon” I first enhanced the Grand Canyon with Photomatix HDR. Then I used Photoshop CS3 and copied Marvin’s image of the Hawk onto the clipboard and pasted it into the Canyon image. Once I had moved the Hawk where I wanted it in the image, I merged the two. Next, I used Micrografx to clean up the edges where the two images were merged. Finally, I used Micrografx Lighting effects to enhance and bring out the image of the Hawk for a more dramatic final effect. This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. Got out to see the Grand Canyon for the first time in my life. I could not believe how queezy it made my stomach to get close to the edge. There are no railings to protect you from falling off the edge. Needless to say, I was very careful. And…YES THOSE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE ON THAT POINT…scary. The startling thing about the visitor’s first view of the canyon is how suddenly it appears. Driving across the flat Coconino Plateau south of the rim provides little preparation for the first view of the massive gash in the earth which is like nothing any first time visitor has ever seen before, anywhere. This is Mather Point. It lies at 7120 feet above sea level. The view northeast from Mather Point (shown below) looks out across O’Neill Butte on the south side of the river across to Zoroaster Temple on the other side. The north rim is about 10 miles across the canyon from this point. The depth of the canyon provides a progressive range of climates which supports different kinds of life. The temperature on the floor of the canyon may reach 120 degrees in the summer. Four of the North American continent’s “life zones” are represented within the park. Stretching 277 miles across northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon ranges in elevation from 2,400 feet to over 7,000 feet above sea level. In places, it is up to one mile deep and over 18 miles wide, while some of the canyon’s majestic plateaus to the north rise to 9,000 feet above sea level. Wotan’s Throne looms over Trail Camp on the Main Mount Whitney Trail. I took this shot on our first trip to the Grand Canyon. This formation really amazed me when I saw how much it looked like a temple or cathedral. If you have the time and stamina, Wotan’s Throne is a nice, short diversion on a Whitney trip or a good acclimatizing dayhike that puts you smack-dab in the middle of spectacular views of the surrounding area. The Colorado Plateau is an enormous landform that covers most of northern Arizona and much of Utah, a chunk of northwestern New Mexico, and most of far-western Colorado. More specifically, the Plateau is an enormous uplifted tableland. To the north and west it’s bordered by the region called the Basin and Range; to the northeast it runs up against the Rocky Mountains; the south side borders the Mogollon Highlands; and to the east and southeast it adjoins the Rio Grande Rift. This is another shot of the Grand Canyon shot a couple of months ago on my first trip to ever see this magnificent wonder of the world. Most visitors to the park come to the South Rim, arriving on Arizona Highway 64. The Highway enters the park through the South Entrance, near Tusayan, Arizona, and heads eastward, leaving the park through the East Entrance. This is the road we took when visiting the Grand Canyon. All park accommodations are operated by the Xanterra corporation. Park headquarters are at Grand Canyon Village, a short distance from the South Entrance, being also the center of the most popular viewpoints. Some thirty miles of the South Rim are accessible by road. Grand Canyon National Park is one of the United States’ oldest national parks and is located in Arizona. Within the park lies the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, considered to be one of the major natural wonders of the world. The park covers 1,902 mi² (4927 km²) of unincorporated area in Coconino County and Mohave County. The area around the Grand Canyon became a national monument on January 11, 1908 and was designated national park on February 26, 1919. The creation of the park was an early success of the environmental conservation movement; its National Park status may have helped thwart proposals to dam the Colorado River within its boundaries. (Lack of this fame may have enabled Glen Canyon Dam to be built upriver, flooding Glen Canyon and creating Lake Powell.) UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage Site. Mount Tahoma is the Native American (Puyallup) name for the mountain we call Rainier, the name means Mother of Water. It stands 14,410ft (4,392m) tall and is located in the Cascade Mountain Range of Washington State. The glacier in this image is Emmons Glacier and is the headwater of the White river. I normally go up to Lamoille Canyon in late afternoon/early evening, but today I went up at around 9:30 a.m. LOTS of jet traffic overhead left interesting effects in the sky.

North Cheyenne Canyon is one of the canyons within Cheyenne Mountain. It is just south of Colorado Springs, Co. Cheyenne Mountain is the home of what was called NORAD (North American Air Defense Command.) It is supposedly where the Star Gate was in the long running series Star Gate SG-1. They often showed the entrance to the mountain on that program.

The sunlight hit just right deep inside the canyon right before sunset enabling me to capture this shot. To me, shots like this show what real beauty and colors lie deep inside the Grand Canyon if you look down for it.
