Amazing night. You can now see flames leaping hundreds of feet into the air on the first visible range in Cachagua, from the hill in front of the post office. That’s about 25 miles from town. Worry about the skillful jump ability of flame. / The sun was setting, a massive cloud of smoke over the valley lit bright pink, totally astounding. It’s getting closer. / We now have a full tent camp for the firefighters set up in the old Carmel Valley airstrip, 500 tents, men, equipment, kitchens, engines. Awesome. They’re great guys. Signs are appearing on fences “Thank you Fire Fighters!” / I went up at sunset. As it grew dark, lights on the camp grounds popped on illuminating the field. Neighbors drove and walked up with their dogs and kids. We looked at maps and got updates. People pointed, talked old stories, asked over and over if the guys needed anything. The community response universally so far is WE ARE SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE!! Zero sense of invasion or imposition. We may be getting national guard or army here too. It’s pretty intense. / So much of Big Sur burned, you just want to cry and cry. And so much saved too, very few houses went considering the size and ferocity of the fires. It sounds like all the resorts and beautiful places in Big Sur got saved, like Ventana, Nepenthe, Esalen, Deetjens, H Miller. Mostly from people refusing to leave and stamping out cinders falling from the sky with their feet! I know it’s going to be hard to look at again. They’ve let people go back to their homes and land, lifted the evacuations from there and Palo Colorado, which did not get burnt after all from what I understand. It’s a bit like hearing gossip and fiction with a bit of truth. All of it drama, some of it actually happening. / Regina and Pat on Tassajara Road have not evacuated yet. They watch the flames shooting off the ridges from their bed at night. Ty is holding firm in Trampa Canyon. Mike’s posting wonderful blogs on his Cachagua Store site with pretty much daily updates, news of crews coming in, feeding the fire guys, songs and beer and attaboys. We’re apparently getting about fifty volunteers from Australia and New Zealand. THANK YOU!! Guys here from Minnesota and New York and Oregon. It’s a thoroughly remarkable experience on every level. / Zero sense so far we’ll get evacuated from the Village, it’s still far from us. Depending on wind direction, you’re scared one day and calm the next. / Late afternoon and into the evening yesterday a huge wet fog moved in from the coast, and by nightfall had covered Carmel Valley. Good news, we were all glad to see it. The weathermen are all fucked up. Predicting heat waves and cooling spells simultaneously, reigning hysteria. Middays out here are hot, in the 100’s. / There’s a kind of stimulated kinship when you meet folks, everybody on a high of adrenalin and emotion, nobody knowing where this damn thing is going to move. Some said the shooting ridge flames last night were from the backfires being lit. They talk about our mountains as the place to hold the line, that ridge is where we make our stand, this canyon may go, that point is in danger, using names unfamiliar to locals….it’s like being in a general’s tent with warfare plotted out on maps. As Mike Jones said in one of his blogs, you get an intimacy and new respect for the land with the google terrain maps you haven’t had from living here. / We’re all in pretty good spirits it seems to me. While it’s frightening to think of the damn thing raging out of control and sweeping the whole central coast, it seems unlikely. I think they’re getting a handle on it, figuring out how to fight it. It’s rough terrain. But we’re strong. And, of course, you knew that. / Best to you all, and heartfelt thanks for your good wishes. / Barbara

Alright, hoping to illicit some information here …... I have the opportunity to travel to the Grand Canyon this weekend, staying in Williams, AZ. Plannning on going to the South Rim for sure, and maybe paying the North Rim a visit as well. Since I have never been, any photographic advice? I’m taking the D200, Tokina 12-24mm, Nikon 24-120mm and the Sigma 50-500mm and of course the Tripod. I’m hoping to get Sunrise and Sunset shots. On my way back to Las Vegas, I will also try to visit the Skywalk (glass walkway which literally goes over the top of the Canyon). Any advice is appreciated, is the park open 24 hours, for instance?

Its 30km long 600 meters wide and a 1000m deep. It has a fascinating history and hopefully I’ll come back with some awesome pics. See y’all next week. D

I feel like lately my brain has been everywhere but focused on one thing, and it’s a little disturbing. I got out two weekends in a row with zero game plans. Last weekend, I got pretty much nada out of it. Saw a little of the state I had never seen, but left with few interesting shots. How this weekend panned out remains to be seen. I just put up the first shot. This breaks my normal rules a bit. Typically I have not put anything up on here that hadn’t gotten reasonable attention in one of the other communities I post on (Flickr or deviant art). I like to test them out a bit first. I half heartedly edited this one last night and posted it before bed. I was worn flat out. I not only visited Tallulah Gorge and went halfway down the canyon, I also drove across North Georgia and down to Amicalola falls, where I was in the late afternoon yesterday! Both places that had been on my list for ages and the fall color beckoned me. Now, the shot got little attention from me or anyone else. I sat down and looked at it again and the sky was a little bright, so I did a little PS magic that more or less equates to a virtual gradient filter to make up for a real one I haven’t bought yet. So, sky less bright, check… But the photo still wasn’t quite doing it for me. The foreground had fall color on it, but it felt flat. I got there about 8:30am. The sun was still casting some good light, but if there was mist in the canyon, I had missed it. I think there might have been because the distant part, I could see some. So, here’s my PS trick, I painted all the mist in the foreground of the shot to resonate with what was already in the distance. A first for me… So, feedback on that appreciated. Before / After I’ve got tons more to go through, but not sure when I’ll get the time.

  • Last week, as told in a previous post, i spent some time hiking in some Provence canyons looking for water. Some years ago, all these small canyons always had a running stream. With years, dryness increases and they are dry most of the time. In november, we had some rainy days so i thought i could find some running water. / I went in a deep, narrow and dark canyon covered by autumn forest. / I had to walk a few hours to find a nice place with a stream running in the stones and a rocky waterfall. Because of the darkness, it was not difficult to obtain the silky water effect. All the shots were between 15 and 30s exposure. / I couldn’t resist to put the tripod legs (and mines) in the stream for some photos but i didn’t kept the resulting photos because moving water made vibrating tripod. When i left the place, the canyon was in the night.

Here’s a new bunch of somewhat interesting but unsellable photos ;) You can click the thumbnails to get larger views (640×480). I worked with my Dad last week near Burke’s Luck in Mpumalanga, Souh Africa. We didn’t go see the potholes (too expensive to just run in for a few photos!) but I did get to see the top of the Blyde River Canyon from a vantage point few other tourists would get to go. This is a paper flower. Ok, that’s not very scientific! But the petals really are papery and if you pick them, they stay like that for months! This was also taken near Burke’s Luck. This is a most amazing little fungus I found in our little overgrown valley. It’s really very very small. Each one opens up like a cup and inside are these little metallic-looking balls, I suppose spores or spore packages. I’ve never seen anything like them before. This is just another pretty fungus. An amazing sunset the other day… This is what our back yard looked like last week right after a terrible hail storm. As you can imagine, all our garden plants were shredded. It looks like mid-winter now. And this is the rainbow I captured earlier this week. The bush doesn’t look too bad on this photo, but if you could have seen it before the hail, you’d know the difference ;) And finally, a proper photo of my two doggies. Jack on the left, and Tessa on the right. Jack is Tessa’s younger brother. They’re Boerboels, and quite huge for the breed. And it’s very hard to get a nice pic of them. I sneaked this one through the window!

  • Yee-Ha! Amarillo on Route 66!

Driving east with the sun at our backs, we came into the outskirts of Amarillo, Texas late in the afternoon. It was here with the flat grassy plains stretching into infinity on both the north and south sides of Route 66 that we came upon a sight that was the quirkiest by far. Have you heard of the infamous Cadillac Ranch? Ten Cadillac automobiles buried nose-down in Texas dirt, all perfectly aligned at the same angle as the Egyptian pyramids (or so the story goes). We pulled over onto the grassy shoulder of Route 66 and then walked about 100 yards through a field for a closer look at these upended caddies. The Texas wind was blowing across the plains at a howling 25-30 miles per hour, making me feel a bit unsteady on my feet. However, those solidly planted Cadillacs were completely oblivious to wind and weather. After more than 20 years in the ground, one would think they would have rusted away. Monty felt sure that all the layers and layers of graffiti paint over the past 20 years had totally sealed every single part from roof top to the undercarriage. We had never seen anything quite like it and if you are ever on Route 66 on the west side of Amarillo, you don’t want to miss it! Route 66 runs straight through the heart of Amarillo. Most of the route through town has completely lost its 66 flavor, but one section of Sixth Street (between Georgia Street and Western Street) recently saw some revitalization to preserve its Route 66 heritage. Amarillo is a Texas town with true cowboy flair, evidenced by side attractions such as the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Heritage Center and Museum. There is also signage all along the interstate advertising a local steakhouse that offers a 72-oz steak, free of charge, if you can eat it all in one hour including all the side items that come with it. It was on one of our side trips out of Amarillo that we met The Big Texan, a 7-ton cowboy. Even though the early morning “backlight” would not make for a great photograph, I took a snapshot anyway just to show his size. Located in the town of Conway on U.S. 60, this cowboy is standing 47 feet high in front of a closed-down restaurant. He was one more quirky sight on our Route 66 road trip. If you have been driving through the plains for too long, you can develop a strong, uncontrollable urge for something uneven…Palo Duro Canyon State Park fit the bill perfectly for us. Upon arriving at the headquarters to the park ($4 per person admission), the terrain looked the same – just more flat plains. But only a short distance into the park the view opened up to reveal a gorgeous vista that we immediately dubbed the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. Cut by the Red River, the red canyon walls are hundreds of feet deep and 125 miles long. It was a beautiful canyon park! There were camping sites, shady picnic spots, well-marked hiking trails, and wildlife viewing. We drove slowly through the 16 miles of paved roads and didn’t leave until late afternoon. Why did it take several hours for us to drive 16 miles? Monty knew the cause immediately. He pointed out that every time he slowed down, the passenger door flew open and the camera & tripod exited the vehicle along with me!

What an amazing 24 hours this has been! One of my photos Untitled has been selected to be Avatar of the month over at the Beginners Corner Forum – I was totally shocked, especially as the standard was so high! Another one of my photos Antelope Canyon was a featured photo in the US National Parks group, which has some amazing photos. Then lo and behold, a question that I asked on the forum yesterday about taking photos in overcast weather , has been listed on today’s The Daily Wrap! I almost fell of my chair when I saw it! Thank you so much to all – It’s so nice to get this type of recognition! :)
