This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. Sold two framed 12”x18” of this a little beauty. For other shots from this area check out my Kosciuszko gallery. Yet another shot from Bryce Canyon, Utah. I do hope you like it! / Thoughts welcome. /
An Anasazi grainery located in Canyonlands National Park. (island in the sky district). /
As we traveled through the National Park to view the Grand Canyon, there were signs everywhere warning of the extreme fire danger. Warnings all over the place to campers that campfires where prohibited due to wildfire danger. Apparently, a group of campers thought the warnings did not apply to them. They started and left a campfire that spread into a 2,000 acre wildfire. / Our views of the canyon were filled with smoke. It took hundreds of firefighters and 3 days to get the fire under control. I was so saddened by the stupidity and carelessness of others and wondered if there were some Spirit Guardian watching over this gift of creation. Thus, the inspiration for this painting.

A beautiful sunrise over the deep and winding canyons of the San Juna river at Goosenecks State Park
This is my favorite image which I captured a year ago on an 8-day backpack into the incredible canyon. It was my first trip there, and I was with non-photographer/hard-core hiker types. So, I had to shoot on-the-go with very little time to think about my shots. This was the only day that we saw any clouds, and it really helped make the photo work. I didn’t realize this at the time, but the lines really draw the viewer in to the art. Lucky me. I leave tomorrow for another week-long backpack into the Grand Canyon!
I spent last week in the wilderness, backpacking through the inner depths of the Grand Canyon. A small side trail led to “Ribbon Falls” from Bright Angel stream on the North Rim. So I went. The place was a magical oasis in the hot and arid desert. I photographed for an hour and then left. I was not satisfied. I had to return. Several days later with sore feet and eager to begin my 4000 foot climb out to civilization, I passed this side trail again and went in for a second look at the falls. The sun was different, and so was the mood. I “felt” the place much better this time and “let the picture take me” this time. I like the result.
This image was captured right after sunrise from Hopi Point in the magnificent Grand Canyon. The colors that morning were simply astounding. The Garden of Eden comes alive with remarkable amounts of water producing waterfalls only seen a handful of times a year. Kings Canyon, Watarrka National park / Northern Territory / Australia
A long fallen rock Acacia lays still in the spot that it must surely have once mastered. These trees are the dominant species on top of the Gill Range and it is easy to see truly unique individuals along the whole of the Kings Canyon rim walk. These trees must be exceptionally resistant to the dramatic weather conditions that sweep across the almost barren landscape. In late December several photogenic trees that I had been watching were severely damage by strong winds that were the product of a stronger than usual storm system. Some are still yet to show sings of recovery and are almost certainly to end up the same as this specimen. Lake Falls in Matthiessen State Park is possibly the most magical, spiritual waterfall I have ever photographed. It is special and always blesses me with a wonderful spiritual feel to it. It inspires me to be religous in some way that I cannot explain. / The whirlpool is like God. He has no beginning and no end. Taken in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA. Bryce is so amazing, all those rock pinnacles thrusting upwards from the deep canyon, with such amazing colours, and some of them look like they are candy coated ! I got very lucky here, the past few days around Bryce had been real stormy, and the park was closed the day before ! Just a matter of setting up the tripod and waiting for the ‘right’ moment ! It snowed later on in the day ! This was taken on a Ricoh KR10 super, on Fuji Velvia slide film, asa 50. Probably f22, I can’t be sure. I scanned the slide with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and edited in PS CS3, a little tidying with the spot removal tool was necessary, and a little reduction of ‘noise’. Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Pretty much a tourist snapshot of the Falls, which I thought I would share with you ! / A rather crowded place, justifiably so, who wouldn’t want to see this sight ? The Canyon has some amazing colours, and I found the best time was towards evening to be viewed at it’s best. The vertiginous slopes are very loose and crumbly, and I wondered how those trees maintain their perilous foothold !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, polariser, tripod, f22, 1/3 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour adjustments.
