We love canvas. And Paul really loves canvas – his walls are covered with the stuff. It’s a classic format for displaying all sorts of artwork. Canvas makes us so happy that we do crazy things, like reducing the price by 20% for 72 hours so you can fill your walls with it too. Here’s Paul with “Silence (Love Awaits)” by Lindsay Blamey: And as you probably won’t have believed us, we’re going to repeat it, all stretched canvas, reduced by 20%, for the next 72 hours. Or until Sunday night for those of you who don’t like numbers. / / Maybe you’ll use this chance to let everyone know about your work on RedBubble or just maybe there’s a bit of wall space at home that’s feeling a bit empty. / / And just like on Columbo, there’s one more thing: We pushed the instant gratification button and guarantee that your canvas will ship in two business days or it’s on us. And for those that love to share, upload a photo of your canvas(es) to the Buyers’ Booth in the next two weeks. We’ll reward three people with a AU$20 RedBubble gift certificate. Details: No code needed, simply checkout with a canvas (or five) in your cart. Discount calculated on base prices through Sunday. Here are a couple of close up shots of the prints themselves so you can bask in the amazing quality. Go ahead, bask, no one’s looking. Images by Narelle, Kookylane and Monkeyboy. And here are a few shots from the Buyers’ Booth. The madness ends Sunday March 29, 2009 at 11:59 US Pacific Time.

This is based on my experience working at markets and in “painting and sculpture” galleries. I have heard of exclusively photographic galleries (collaborative- not just for a single photographer) which are an easier market but I am yet to find one in Melbourne. DISCLAIMER: The opinions presented in this journal are not a substitute for professional advice and are based on analogical evidence Things that I have found help to sell photography are: / 1) Taking a strikingly lucky, creative and one off image that others would struggle to replicate / 2) Presenting your photos in an original way / 3) Providing support material to the seller about the image and yourself / 4) Signing the image and providing info on the back / 5) Having a variety of photos available for sale / 6) Only having one copy of each image on display Things I have found detract from selling photography / 1) Inferior or unsuitable framing or packaging / 2) You are selling a whole bunch of your images and most of them look similar- or more so, look like you took them all on the same day / 3) No information about the image is available / 4) No image about the photographer is available / 5) I hate to say it but photographers with birthdates in the 1980s should consider omitting this information from their biography because youth = inexperience in the minds of some buyers. The exception seems to be works using a lot of photomanipulation. / 6) Damaged prints or packaging / 7) And it might have seemed the most obvious point but images that are not interesting, or that do not fufil a decorative need There are many ways of presentaion your images including: / 1) Loose prints or posters / 2) Matted prints (and whether to sign the image or the mat) / 3) Canvas Prints / 4) Framed Prints / 5) Putting your images on other products (tastefully) Generally speaking, bad presentation will doom the sale of even the most amazing photograph and that the more creative and unusual your presentation, the more attention you and your work will recieve. Who has some other tips?

Another update to the site this morning. A lot of work in the backend to help deal with this rapidly growing community but with few new features to keep everybody happy: / Canvas prints have been added. For now they are canvas mounted on board. We have decided to leave it the artists to decide which works they want to sell in this form. If you want to sell canvas prints you will need to update your portfolio accordingly. / An automatic email signature. This is a random image strip of your portfolio such as this one from Paul’s work. It is still a work in progress and Xavier has explained here what it is all about. / / More sharpening of the small images.

Dear all. The gift we would like to create in memory of Axel Moore, and in support of the family of a large canvas print of this photo / / taken by Bill Fonseca can now be made. thank you all for your generosity. It is warmly received. Redbubble will contact people individually and facilitate through paypal. / ___________ update 31.12.07 Paypal donations. There are a number of unexpected expenses the family has incurred due to the event, such as the Careflight helicopter coming out, and time off work. These things put an added pressure on a family at times such as these. I have looked into paypal, and it seems it is easy to do if you have the email address, which is family@origoblue.com.au and sign up to paypal here All ways of contributing to the family are greatly appreciated, and really make a difference to their lives. It is a really positive way to help someone when you’re not sure ‘what you can do”-here another way. Thank you all for your generosity. ____________ Nothing will bring Axel back, however, the memory of the community support is the glue that binds us to this earth and each other. The ceremony today was an inspiration to the human spirit. It was touching, it was real and the love people offer just by their presence, I’m sure will help console the family in the smallest of ways in this huge time of change. I know so many people would like to do something ‘real’ to help. If this is you, please feel free to contribute in this way now. kind regards to all. xsunset

I would like to share some good news: I recently SOLD 3 Canvas Prints of my Jasper photos from Marble Bar to a Company in Western Australia. The required size for the Canvas Prints was 100×70cm. As Redbubble doesn’t do this larger size, I had to have them produced locally. Feedback is that the customer is extremely happy with their 3 Jasper Canvas Prints. These will be hung in their Boardroom for all to see. This is my first major sale!! I have learnt a lot from the overall experience and am a little wiser because of it!! I now have my own ABN for any future sales! Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_3 Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_6 Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_2 Thank you for viewing!! Marilyn :o)

  • Canvas Prints: My New Obsession

When I heard that RedBubble canvas prints were being upgraded to a more professional and superior finish, my ears pricked up. I love canvas prints but I’m also picky as hell when it comes to how they are put together. I enthusiastically sent off an image that I have printed many times before as a tester. Well, I can now safely say that the canvas print product is my new favorite. In fact, I was so impressed by it that I’ve written this review for you and will be spurting canvas love from this moment on. / / / / / / Colour / Having seen my work Escape printed numerous times now, and through various methods, I am extremely impressed with the colour achieved. It is true to the original image and has lots of depth and tone. Suitability / I happen to do photography, but I can only imagine how freaking amazing vector and 3D art would look printed like this. And what a great way to sell “prints” of original paintings! A seriously flexible product. These are going to become my new default product for exhibitions and gifts. They look classy, are well made have a point of difference that makes my work stand out. Texture / When I worked in art galleries, we used to sell photos printed on canvas and people would often ask to touch them. There was something about a photographic images presented like a painting that intrigued them (and me!) You can’t get the same fine detail as a photo print but that is part of the charm. Now I just have to curb my addiction to stroking the canvas. / / / / / / Wooden Stretcher / Possibly the best part of this ‘upgrade’ is how the canvas is now presented on a wooden stretcher. Canvas likes to ‘breathe’ making wooden stretchers the perfect way to display and protect your new piece of art. They also have a deeper profile and are sturdier – a more professionally finished product and great alternative to expensive framing for exhibitions. / / / / / / White Sides / Customers love how white sides make a photo look like a painting and make pop art stand out on their wall, artists love that their closely cropped images still look great when stretched as a canvas print and the dignity of preserving the image on one surface. White sides is an aesthetic choice but it certainly has it’s perks and gives your work a point of difference in a competitive market. / / / / / / Sticker on the back I am quite fond of the sticker on the back which lists the title and artist’s name. They are a nice clean design that doesn’t detract from the art, but also ensures your customers can find you again in the future. The stickers, while durable enough to stand the test of time, are also easy to peel off should I want to resell my canvases with more personalised branding. / / / / / / Price / I bought a large canvas print for a base price of $110 Australian dollars. What I received would normally cost me upwards of $400 in most art galleries by your typical ‘no name’ artist. Not only does this mean there is plenty of room for a mark up on RedBubble, but it means there is profit to be made should I want to use them for exhibitions or for reselling. Within 24 hours of receiving my first canvas print, I’d clocked up another $440 on the credit card buying 4 more. That tells me how ‘worth it’ I think they are. Oh yeah, and when you buy four of them, you also get free shipping. Loving it! So yes, I am now officially obsessed with RedBubble canvas prints. You’ll find me sitting in my study patting them gently as I sing to myself. Images by Ben Ryan

So on the weekend I bought and primed a canvas. It’s been a while. A long while. And I’m a little bit scared. All that white space looking back at me. Judging me. I unpacked my art from kinder, smudges that are dragons, pink swiggly bits that are people. 20 years later and I still see the dragon, and the people. Terrified about what I might create, I keep telling myself, a smudged-dragon is better than a blank canvas

I just got the most delightful message that a picture of mine was sold as a medium-sized canvas print. As the name of the buyer is not given, my only possibility to express my gratitude is by writing this journal here. Of course this is a wonderful boost for my photographic work. So I am indeed ever so grateful. Many, many, many thanks! / And whoever the buyer is and wherever he or she lives, I hope the print will give him or her lots and lots of joy. S/he may know that it is a picture which I love dearly myself. And it also is the picture which is most-viewed and faved in this gallery, with 1667 views and 55 faves. Here the lucky shot , called “The first touch of autumn in laneland”

Oh My Jellybean! What a wonderful suprise to wake up to this morning! Let me tell you, the words that flew out of my mouth when I saw that I had sold a canvas print of “Idyllic” were not fit for polite company! It is such an incredible buzz! Thankyou, from the bottom of my heart, for giving me the greatest gift an amatuer photographer can get. Knowing that someone believes in their work, and admires it enough to want it hanging on their wall. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!! And while I am here, I also need to thank the person who bought framed prints of “Indigo” and “Weathered” last week. I didnt realise at the time that it was ok for me to acknowledge sales here… but now that I have… THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!! As my first ever sales these two prints will always hold a special place in my heart… likewise the buyer. Also a HUGE thankyou has to go to REDBUBBLE for making this possible. This site has been an inspiration that defies words. Now… does someone have a long enough rope to reach me up here on cloud nine? I’m going to need to come down sooner or later and well… I’m a little afraid of heights ;)
