Another update to the site this morning. A lot of work in the backend to help deal with this rapidly growing community but with few new features to keep everybody happy: / Canvas prints have been added. For now they are canvas mounted on board. We have decided to leave it the artists to decide which works they want to sell in this form. If you want to sell canvas prints you will need to update your portfolio accordingly. / An automatic email signature. This is a random image strip of your portfolio such as this one from Paul’s work. It is still a work in progress and Xavier has explained here what it is all about. / / More sharpening of the small images.

This is based on my experience working at markets and in “painting and sculpture” galleries. I have heard of exclusively photographic galleries (collaborative- not just for a single photographer) which are an easier market but I am yet to find one in Melbourne. DISCLAIMER: The opinions presented in this journal are not a substitute for professional advice and are based on analogical evidence Things that I have found help to sell photography are: / 1) Taking a strikingly lucky, creative and one off image that others would struggle to replicate / 2) Presenting your photos in an original way / 3) Providing support material to the seller about the image and yourself / 4) Signing the image and providing info on the back / 5) Having a variety of photos available for sale / 6) Only having one copy of each image on display Things I have found detract from selling photography / 1) Inferior or unsuitable framing or packaging / 2) You are selling a whole bunch of your images and most of them look similar- or more so, look like you took them all on the same day / 3) No information about the image is available / 4) No image about the photographer is available / 5) I hate to say it but photographers with birthdates in the 1980s should consider omitting this information from their biography because youth = inexperience in the minds of some buyers. The exception seems to be works using a lot of photomanipulation. / 6) Damaged prints or packaging / 7) And it might have seemed the most obvious point but images that are not interesting, or that do not fufil a decorative need There are many ways of presentaion your images including: / 1) Loose prints or posters / 2) Matted prints (and whether to sign the image or the mat) / 3) Canvas Prints / 4) Framed Prints / 5) Putting your images on other products (tastefully) Generally speaking, bad presentation will doom the sale of even the most amazing photograph and that the more creative and unusual your presentation, the more attention you and your work will recieve. Who has some other tips?

Dear all. The gift we would like to create in memory of Axel Moore, and in support of the family of a large canvas print of this photo / / taken by Bill Fonseca can now be made. thank you all for your generosity. It is warmly received. Redbubble will contact people individually and facilitate through paypal. / ___________ update 31.12.07 Paypal donations. There are a number of unexpected expenses the family has incurred due to the event, such as the Careflight helicopter coming out, and time off work. These things put an added pressure on a family at times such as these. I have looked into paypal, and it seems it is easy to do if you have the email address, which is family@origoblue.com.au and sign up to paypal here All ways of contributing to the family are greatly appreciated, and really make a difference to their lives. It is a really positive way to help someone when you’re not sure ‘what you can do”-here another way. Thank you all for your generosity. ____________ Nothing will bring Axel back, however, the memory of the community support is the glue that binds us to this earth and each other. The ceremony today was an inspiration to the human spirit. It was touching, it was real and the love people offer just by their presence, I’m sure will help console the family in the smallest of ways in this huge time of change. I know so many people would like to do something ‘real’ to help. If this is you, please feel free to contribute in this way now. kind regards to all. xsunset

LIES PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS *BY RL HALL AND LINAJI...

LIES PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS BY RL HALL AND LINAJI A collaboration of loving work between rlhall & linaji – Webs & Layers Your Spiritual side is wise, intuitive, creative, loving, compassionate, peaceful, forgiving, always aspiring to truth and goodness – or – your life is lived in confusion, anger, and perhaps, even, layers of lies and deceit.” ~ Dr. John Sarno, The Divided Mind “If you cannot find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?” / ~ Dogen “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ~ Antoine Saint-Exupéry “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” ~ William Blake _“Believe that your life is worth living, and your belief will create the fact.” ~ William James Acceptance ~ Robert Frost When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud / And goes down burning into the gulf below, / No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud / At what has happened. Birds, at least must know / It is the change to darkness in the sky. / Murmuring something quiet in her breast, / One bird begins to close a faded eye; / Or overtaken too far from his nest, / Hurrying low above the grove, some waif / Swoops just in time to his remembered tree. / At most he thinks or twitters softly, ‘Safe! / Now let the night be dark for all of me. / Let the night be too dark for me to see / Into the future. Let what will be, be.’_ _Layers of Beliefs I have unfurled my wisdom / And before me / I only know / Truths / That have been born and branded / By my hand / How can it be any other way? I have heard and have been told / Of / About / Yours… / But My core is the listener / The one who knew before the knowing / Or of the Telling We are parted now.. / maybe for 4 years or 10 / Maybe it is not again But the knowing you / Was like a root plant / Better left in the shade of its’ own calling Than to open to the sun of my smile / Or yours. Past Lives are just that, / Past.. The Now that pulsates and thrives Has been dropped from view.. It is no longer about you Time for a new lesson Time for a new view._ Thank You Everyone, espically RL Hall for linking into my heart and for setting up most of this show.. her finding the amazing quotes from our favorite poets and leaders made the core of our work shine!! What a pleasure this collaboration was between us!

  • Canvas Prints: My New Obsession

When I heard that RedBubble canvas prints were being upgraded to a more professional and superior finish, my ears pricked up. I love canvas prints but I’m also picky as hell when it comes to how they are put together. I enthusiastically sent off an image that I have printed many times before as a tester. Well, I can now safely say that the canvas print product is my new favorite. In fact, I was so impressed by it that I’ve written this review for you and will be spurting canvas love from this moment on. / / / / / / Colour / Having seen my work Escape printed numerous times now, and through various methods, I am extremely impressed with the colour achieved. It is true to the original image and has lots of depth and tone. Suitability / I happen to do photography, but I can only imagine how freaking amazing vector and 3D art would look printed like this. And what a great way to sell “prints” of original paintings! A seriously flexible product. These are going to become my new default product for exhibitions and gifts. They look classy, are well made have a point of difference that makes my work stand out. Texture / When I worked in art galleries, we used to sell photos printed on canvas and people would often ask to touch them. There was something about a photographic images presented like a painting that intrigued them (and me!) You can’t get the same fine detail as a photo print but that is part of the charm. Now I just have to curb my addiction to stroking the canvas. / / / / / / Wooden Stretcher / Possibly the best part of this ‘upgrade’ is how the canvas is now presented on a wooden stretcher. Canvas likes to ‘breathe’ making wooden stretchers the perfect way to display and protect your new piece of art. They also have a deeper profile and are sturdier – a more professionally finished product and great alternative to expensive framing for exhibitions. / / / / / / White Sides / Customers love how white sides make a photo look like a painting and make pop art stand out on their wall, artists love that their closely cropped images still look great when stretched as a canvas print and the dignity of preserving the image on one surface. White sides is an aesthetic choice but it certainly has it’s perks and gives your work a point of difference in a competitive market. / / / / / / Sticker on the back I am quite fond of the sticker on the back which lists the title and artist’s name. They are a nice clean design that doesn’t detract from the art, but also ensures your customers can find you again in the future. The stickers, while durable enough to stand the test of time, are also easy to peel off should I want to resell my canvases with more personalised branding. / / / / / / Price / I bought a large canvas print for a base price of $110 Australian dollars. What I received would normally cost me upwards of $400 in most art galleries by your typical ‘no name’ artist. Not only does this mean there is plenty of room for a mark up on RedBubble, but it means there is profit to be made should I want to use them for exhibitions or for reselling. Within 24 hours of receiving my first canvas print, I’d clocked up another $440 on the credit card buying 4 more. That tells me how ‘worth it’ I think they are. Oh yeah, and when you buy four of them, you also get free shipping. Loving it! So yes, I am now officially obsessed with RedBubble canvas prints. You’ll find me sitting in my study patting them gently as I sing to myself. Images by Ben Ryan

So on the weekend I bought and primed a canvas. It’s been a while. A long while. And I’m a little bit scared. All that white space looking back at me. Judging me. I unpacked my art from kinder, smudges that are dragons, pink swiggly bits that are people. 20 years later and I still see the dragon, and the people. Terrified about what I might create, I keep telling myself, a smudged-dragon is better than a blank canvas

I would like to share some good news: I recently SOLD 3 Canvas Prints of my Jasper photos from Marble Bar to a Company in Western Australia. The required size for the Canvas Prints was 100×70cm. As Redbubble doesn’t do this larger size, I had to have them produced locally. Feedback is that the customer is extremely happy with their 3 Jasper Canvas Prints. These will be hung in their Boardroom for all to see. This is my first major sale!! I have learnt a lot from the overall experience and am a little wiser because of it!! I now have my own ABN for any future sales! Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_3 Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_6 Jasper_-_Marble_Bar_2 Thank you for viewing!! Marilyn :o)

I just got the most delightful message that a picture of mine was sold as a medium-sized canvas print. As the name of the buyer is not given, my only possibility to express my gratitude is by writing this journal here. Of course this is a wonderful boost for my photographic work. So I am indeed ever so grateful. Many, many, many thanks! / And whoever the buyer is and wherever he or she lives, I hope the print will give him or her lots and lots of joy. S/he may know that it is a picture which I love dearly myself. And it also is the picture which is most-viewed and faved in this gallery, with 1667 views and 55 faves. Here the lucky shot , called “The first touch of autumn in laneland”

We love canvas. And Paul really loves canvas – his walls are covered with the stuff. It’s a classic format for displaying all sorts of artwork. Canvas makes us so happy that we do crazy things, like reducing the price by 20% for 72 hours so you can fill your walls with it too. Here’s Paul with “Silence (Love Awaits)” by Lindsay Blamey: And as you probably won’t have believed us, we’re going to repeat it, all stretched canvas, reduced by 20%, for the next 72 hours. Or until Sunday night for those of you who don’t like numbers. / / Maybe you’ll use this chance to let everyone know about your work on RedBubble or just maybe there’s a bit of wall space at home that’s feeling a bit empty. / / And just like on Columbo, there’s one more thing: We pushed the instant gratification button and guarantee that your canvas will ship in two business days or it’s on us. And for those that love to share, upload a photo of your canvas(es) to the Buyers’ Booth in the next two weeks. We’ll reward three people with a AU$20 RedBubble gift certificate. Details: No code needed, simply checkout with a canvas (or five) in your cart. Discount calculated on base prices through Sunday. Here are a couple of close up shots of the prints themselves so you can bask in the amazing quality. Go ahead, bask, no one’s looking. Images by Narelle, Kookylane and Monkeyboy. And here are a few shots from the Buyers’ Booth. The madness ends Sunday March 29, 2009 at 11:59 US Pacific Time.

An artist friend sent this link to me today and it is a youtube video of four digital artists all painting simultaneously on the same digital canvas. They are working off of what the others are doing and yet creating a cohesive piece of group art at the same time. It is truly amazing and fun to watch. Some of you may have seen this but it was new to me. If you haven’t seen it, you must check it out. Four artists

  • A Reason to Shout! 15% Off Framed and Canvas Prints. 7 Days Only.
    by selling

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity …

Shout This promotion is a great opportunity to market your art. It’s also a good opportunity to do a bit of ordering for the holidays – which will be here before we know it. Make It Better 15% off framed and canvas prints is a pretty good savings, but you have the power to make it an even better discount for shoppers. Here’s an example of the discount you can boast when you lower your margins temporarily for this promotion. For example, by lowering a mark-up from 30% to 15%, you can market your prints for 25% off. Come and Get It Here are a few ways to get the word out about this promotion: 1. Announce the sale in a journal article and suggest a few best-selling (or new) designs to shoppers. 2. Use your blog, social networking hangout, or other webpage to promote your sale. You can use the graphics that we provide below, or create your own. If you create a graphic (or template) and want to share it with other RedBubble members, simply link to it in the comments area below. 3. Create a unique sales event about: New Work – “See my newest artwork and get 25% off. Framed and canvas prints start at under $x!” Seasonal Sale – “Eliminate the last minute gifting worries at holiday time. Get unique framed and canvas prints on sale now.” If you have any holiday-themed artwork, you might want to link to a few from your profile page. Series Sale – Use your Profile page to suggest artworks that can be paired, e.g., “Buy this pair of Paris prints for under $x.” Limited Editions – Offer an artwork for the week of this sale only. Then put it in storage for 6 months. Limited Editions and sales promotions work well together. Newsletter Special – Send news of the sale to a hand-picked group of contacts. If you have a large contact list or are concerned about spam filters, services such as Campaign Monitor allow you to send emails for 1 cent per email. Plus, services like this one offer free email templates that do not require a knowledge of programming languages such as HTML. If you send an email, remember to: only use a list of people that agreed to receive your emails; note the promotion deadline; check your links. More email tips are here. Raffle – This idea is a bit more work, but you can post a contest/raffle on your Profile page. E.g., “Buy now and be entered to win an original artwork. Send me a quick note at the end of checkout (there’s a field for this on the final page of checkout) and I’ll enter you in quick and fun drawing to win my artwork named “x.” FYI, in the U.S., you need to allow a “no purchase necessary” option, e.g., allow people to email their entry without purchase. You can put this in small type using the ^ character on either side of your text. Dig It The price you and shoppers see has already been discounted by 15% on RedBubble pages and in the cart. Happy selling! The RedBubble Team p.s. If you have an interest in learning more sales techniques, check out the Sales Group and our free Selling tips and tricks. • Thinking of selling cards, well how good does your card look and while we're at it what about the other products

I keep coming across beautiful images and cards that I would love to buy but I am put off of some that have words or borders because when I check them in the preview the borders are uneven or the wording is cut off. It is due to the small crop that Red Bubble does when printing them out. I am also reluctant to buy cards of images that are not the right size and you end up with them looking lost in card format. I am guilty of this myself and have been going through my large gallery and amending them. I have therefore rounded up what I hope will help us get them right. Knowledge Base: cropping and borders / We want your images to look amazing for your customer, and how you intended. The products have been designed to make your images look their best without the needing to add borders on your image files. The production of some products will require a small crop of 1-2mm but this is mostly unnoticeable. When making a purchase, the previews that you see on RedBubble should accurately reflect how the image will be positioned and cropped so use these as a guide For cards aspect ratio matters which is about 3:2 Here are the resolution thresholds for each of our products: Greeting Cards: 1300×900 pixels (1 megapixel) Matted Prints: 1800×1260 pixels (2.5 megapixels) Laminated, Mounted and Framed Prints and Stretched Canvas: / o 2400×1600 pixels (4 megapixels) for the small print / o 3240×2160 pixels (7 megapixels) for the medium print / o 3840×2560 pixels (10 megapixels) for the large print Posters: / o 2500×3500 pixels for the smallest print / o 3500×5000 pixels for the medium print / o 5000×7100 pixels for the large print Calendar images: 2182×1906 pixels for the months and 2371×2875 pixels for the cover Clothing: exactly 2400×3200 pixels (and the file must be a PNG). Notes Please do not manually change the pixel dimensions of your image. We use the number of pixels in an image to determine which sizes are appropriate – if you change the pixel dimensions you will trick our quality control software – but the products will come out looking blocky and horribly pixelated. If your image size or format is not right, this might restrict you from selling some products. We automatically determine which products your file can be used to create, so that we only ship products that both you and we can be proud of. Images above 60Mb, or 10,000×10,000 pixels in size, cannot be accepted on the site due to the unreasonable load they place on our servers. If you’re uploading files larger than 20MB they should probably be compressed or scaled down a bit — we don’t print billboards yet! File Format / We accept JPEG or PNG files (we don’t accept TIFF or PDF files). Colour Profile / We prefer the sRGB colour space (our printers are calibrated to sRGB). All of the above tips were found around Red Bubble I hope this helps, I thought thast having the info in one place would be helpful as I had to search around for it all If you do need to amend an image, no need to delete and upload afresh, just amend your image with your software and upload new version under the original in my bubble…....... / art…....... / and / using the change this image function under edit PLEASE check out this link too
