  • I was trying to express my love of both mediums (art and jazz) with this painting.. so it’s a kind of marriage of the two. Seems to have a kind of Picasso feel to it, although unintentional. The two brushes are real by the way, and have been collaged onto the canvas. I find a lot of correlations between art and music and I have been fortunate enough to be able to mix both pleasures for my jazz-art series “Jazz Is Art, Art Is Jazz”. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - - / An exhibiting visual artist, Leith O’Malleys work is very popular on both the Australian and international front due to his successful leithomalley.com website and his high profile on overseas jazz and art sites where his “Jazz is Art, Art is Jazz” series is featured. In recent years his work has been used to promote jazz festivals in Adelaide, Newcastle and even Moscow where his portraits of musicians were even featured on city billboards during the “Rio, Havanna & New York” jazz festival two years ago. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - - / He was recently commissioned by New York’s Festival Productions Inc to produce the promotional artwork for the 30th Anniversary Saratoga Jazz Festival being held in Saratoga Springs, New York in June 2007. / Leith’s artwork will feature heavily in the concert promotions including brochures and the very collectable anniversary concert t-shirts. / This years festival, sponsored by “Freihofers” will feature George Benson, India Arie, David Sanborn, Al Green, John Scofield, Roy Hargrove, Ravi Coltrane, Troy Haynes, Jean-Luc Ponty and many more. - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - - / More information here - / As far as music being an influence. It always has..I come from a very musical family and it has always been a part of all I do. I have a broad knowledge and appreciation of many forms of music, although I lean a lot more towards black music like blues and jazz. I’ve always just painted what I’m inspired or influenced by and at the moment it’s pretty much jazz…not “trad” jazz though, I can only appreciate the history in that stuff. There is actually a lot of great “new jazz” starting to get airplay on national radio, a kind of mixture of urban jazz, electronica, hip-hop and drum and bass grooves. I often find myself jumping from something like Billie Holiday or Muddy Waters to Gota, Soundscape UK, St. Germain or even a “Café Del Mar” CD in the space of a few hours. There’s a lot of great music out there.. / The images? Well some of the images I produce are based on old photographs, but I like to give them my own “stamp” so they don’t necessarily look like the photo’s of course. I certainly need some reference points when it’s a portrait though, so the odd CD cover can help. / My preferences are the ones which come straight from the imagination… a rough idea, a random thought, where something is captured…..paintings or drawings that just kind of happen…they’re the ones which make it all worthwhile. / -L. O’Malley*

  • Design from original oil on canvas painting by Leith O’Malley.

  • I painted this a few years ago and still have the original four by three foot painting in my studio. / I have a wide range of musical appreciation and Trane along with Miles Davis continue to inspire me in life and in art. I can make the print available if anyones interested. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - / / – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – / John Coltrane is sometimes described as one of jazz’s most influential musicians, but one is hard put to find followers who actually play in his style. Rather, he is influential by example, inspiring musicians to experiment, take chances, and devote themselves to their craft. The controversy about his work has never died down, but partially as a result, his name lives on and his recordings continue to remain available and to be reissued frequently. / - / His album BLUE TRAIN is certainly deserving of being hailed as a “classic,” a term grossly overused these days. Imagination or creativity doesn’t always come in the form of extreme busyness, and if you give this album your full attention, it will offer riches galore. / There is good reason why BLUE TRAIN is listed on many a jazz educator’s essential recordings list: It IS essential.

  • a t-shirt of my highly favourited painting of the Byron Bay Lighthouse – for anyone who loves lighthouses…

  • All in Editing Group: I submit this on the basis of it originally being a painting on actual canvas, which was then scanned, cropped, resized and added to a t-shirt .. so .. definitely edited, and for specific purpose. One day, if and when I return (yes, I really am going! lol), and by that I mean “If God is willing”, not that I am planning on not returning, I shall try to remember to put all the right sort of links up for this piece. Until then, enjoy! If you desire another color of t-shirt, let me know and I’ll be glad to help you out by temporarily adding that other color on. .................................................... / ................................................. More group weirdness. This and two other pieces were rejected by the All Orange Group for failing to meet their guidelines; their guidelines being that the pieces must be 80 percent orange or that orange must dominate the piece with one other color included. Right? Waiting to hear what they have to say for themselves, now, vis a vis this email to them: Hello, I am writing this email to both of the co-hosts of the All Things Orange group, at once. I would like to know why it was decided that ‘Slice of Ordinary Me 12 06 2008’ and the ‘Slice of Ordinary Me 4 Tee’ were rejected. I can see your point with the other one, from the same painting, as, unfortunately, it does not show up as being nearly as orange on the computer as it does in real life. It is over 80 percent orange, though, because the entire background is orange and every single aspect of it shines through with an orange tint, or is a pure orange. However, I shall not ask you about that one. The other too are varying shades of orange, but are well over 80 percent orange. They are almost completely orange in fact, except for the black outlines and mild touches of green and blue. On top of that, one of them is a design on an orange t-shirt, which has only been submitted to exist on an orange t-shirt, for the purposes of being included in the All Things Orange group. These two are yellow-orange, red-orange, hot orange, bright orange, and super light almost white orange. So, why were they rejected, please, because they do fit the groups guidelines and so I do not accept that they do not as the answer for their rejection; and I am very tired of being rejected by groups and given excuses that do not fit the situation. Thank you very much for your time. Arletta ???????????????
