Well I finally have done what I have been wanting to do for a long time. I purchased a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI 10.1 MP. I have been wanting a full Digital SLR camera for a very long time. It is my very first one. I currently own the Canon Powershot S3 but it was limiting me way to much. / I also purchased a killer lens. / The Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens So hopefully soon I will be uploading some new work. Sorry to say I have not bought the IR filter yet. / Also on Friday I am beginning my first class as a member of / The Cleveland Photographic Society Its a class that meets every week for learning and competitions. / Also do field trips. I would like to thank everyone on this site for inspiring me to get more involved with Photography.

  • Tutorial: Photographing the Milky Way with a standard DSLR camera
    by Cain Doherty

I have an improved and better formatted version of this tutorial in my wordpress blog....

I have an improved and better formatted version of this tutorial in my wordpress blog. This tutorial will cover the development of my image Milky Way from Apollo Bay using a Canon 350D, a wide angle lens, Adobe Photoshop and an image alignment program called hugin. For this to be repeatable you must be shooting with clear dark skies, free from light pollution. I used settings of Tv: 20 sec, Av: f/4, focal length: 17mm and ISO speed: 1600. A shutter release cable is also a great tool and can keep your camera clicking as it sits on the tripod. The more images taken, the better for the final result, because this will improve the signal to noise ratio that plagues digital sensors during long exposures. A tracking mount is not necessary with a 20 second shutter speed because the rotation of the night sky is undetectable at such a wide angle. Please read the following steps for more information. All images are hyperlinked to larger sizes. 1) Download this zipped folder containing four of my unaligned shots of the Milky Way. 2) Load them into hugin_0.7_beta_4. 3) Manually align images with control points – don’t automatically align. I aligned three images to a common one. Enlarge the screenshot for details. 4) Click Edit – fine tune all points. 5) Click View – preview window. 6) Click Center and Fit buttons to achieve this view. 7) Click Edit – Optimise. 8) Click Stitcher – image format – multiple tiff . Final screen before clicking Stitch Now . 9) If you don’t want to worry about learning how to align the images with hugin, then you can download this zipped folder containing the four prealigned images of the Milky Way. 10) Load each image onto a new layer in photoshop adjusting the blend mode to screen which is good at lightening images without lightening the darkest areas. 11) Add a medium contrast curves layer. 12) Add colour balance layer: shadows (-90,-25,-10), midtones (-15,-5,-20), highlights (0,-5,30). 13) The final result For comparison’s sake, shown below is a typical accompanying jpeg to a raw file I began with for one of the individual images. I used Adobe Camera Raw to extract the jpegs provided in step 1 for processing. In closing, I’d like to point out this is not the only way an image like this can be captured; there is myriads of possibilities. I have developed this simple and inexpensive method by just experimenting with the tools at my disposal. Comments are welcomed. If you haven’t done so already, please check out another tutorial I have written: Layer Masks and Transparency Gradients for The Heart.

I’d like to say first and foremost I love the bubble for allowing me to show off my work, particularly as I’m still learning, which means that the quality of my work when I first came here wasn’t as good as it is starting to get now. I can thank the lovely helpful people I’ve met along the way for helping me focus better on what works and what doesn’t. As much as I loathe the negativity in the forums, I read some of the threads there and learn from them too, so thanks so much everyone for your support, or not, it’s all making me a better photographer. I’ve got a secret to share, regarding my seascapes. I’ve been lucky enough to have a friend who is very keen to get the perfect seascape shot, and for that reason I’ve been getting up at 2am or so to drive out to his place so we can then continue on to beaches 2 or more hours away, just so we can be there before dawn. The weather has to be right, there has to be clouds, the tides need to be doing the right things, and there needs to be rocks as foreground and or middle ground interest. In the 18 months that we’ve been following this course, we’ve managed to capture some amazing photos, and the shoot that gave me all these latest photos was the best so far. It’s taken his dedication to getting the conditions right, and a little bit of work from me with a camera and PS to produce this work, so please, when you look at my seascape photos, say thanks to Nick Lagos, its all down to him. His shots are a million times better, believe me! For those of you who may be interested in what kit I’m using, I have a battered Canon 5D, I use a 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens, and I bought the Lee filters to fit the wide angle so that I don’t get vignetting. I use both ND and ND grey grads, and combinations of them all, but only 2 at the most. My Manfrotto 190D tripod is not as heavy as it should be, but does a reasonable job, and I always have the cable release tied around the stalk between head and legs. I’m using the 322 RC head on the tripod, but I also really should have a level to put onto the hot shoe….keep forgetting to buy one…other than that I shoot in raw and small jpg, so I can run a quick slideshow on a laptop if necessary, or even when I get home to the clunker. I use ps and photomatix to get the best out of the shots, and my ability to use ps has been learnt through going through tutorials on the net and in manuals. Since maths and me don’t get on, I really have no idea why things work, only that sometimes I get a good result if I do “this” or “that” I get a lot of inspiration from the artists here, I can’t thank you all enough for showing me new subjects and processes. Once I read about some new technique I’ll google it and find out more. I recommend this to anyone who may want to improve their work. I’m technically challenged when it comes to using a camera, although I’m learning more and more the longer I shoot. I’ve only been shooting semi-seriously since 2004, and only came off P on my camera in late 2005. I still don’t shoot on M, unless I’m after a particular result that I want to try….and that’s how I work….hit and miss :) It’s all been digital, starting with a Canon G2, then powershot pro1, then 20D. So, thats my story, sorry if it’s a little boring, but I needed to clear up some misconceptions that I might actually know what I’m doing! There’s absolutely no truth to that rumour, its all down to Nick’s need to get the “Big Pic” and I’ve just been swept along with his enthusiasm. As all his loyal subjects will attest, he’s the best thing that’s happened to us, those of us who’ve been lucky enough to be taken into the fold, / so once again, thanks Nick, the legend lives on buddy!

Part 2 … the part that comes after the first part in my ongoing review of the Canon 40D. What a big journey the last four days has been. I unpacked my Canon 40D on Friday and by Monday I had seen ducks mating … joined a protest rally … rescued starfish on a beach … met Santa on the side of a road … become a horse whisperer and joined a flock of Pelicans!. How wonderful my world is with the Canon 40D. Every day I feel a sense of excitement and wonder at all that is around me. It is as if my eyes have been opened and I am seeing everything for the first time. After initially taking 960+ photos of ducks, then finding another duck pond and taking a few hundred more, I have decided that I am over the duck phase in my life. It was fleeting .. it was frenzied …but its over and you can rest assured that I won’t be loading thousands of photos of ducks on to my RB account. (SFX: Collective sigh of relief) However my new obsession is the Pelican – nature’s own stand up comedian ! (SFX: Canned laughter) I am so in love with the Pelican that I have even joined a fan club and begun to sing a favourite rhyme … (Fade in theme music …) A wonderful bird is the pelican, / His bill can hold more than his belican. / He can take in his beak / Enough food for a week; / But I’m damned if I know how the helican. author unknown Here are just a few of my Pelican shots, unpolished, straight from the camera using a 17-85mm lens. If you don’t like these, don’t worry, I have hundreds more LOL. / I have now read past the first “tick the boxes” page in the 40D manual. The technical stuff is still all gobbledygook but the sample pictures are nice :-D Darren was right, it is a steep learning curve … but I’ll get there. / Cheers Sooz

A lot of people have been asking me what camera and lenses I use. Instead of replying to everyone individually, I thought I’d just put the answer out here in a journal. So, what lens do I use? / The one that came factory attached to my shitty little handheld Samsung Digimax 530. What camera do I use? / The shitty little handheld that came factory attached to my ONE lens ;-P I do not have a fancy, high-end camera. Though I would LOVE to get my hands on a Canon EOS 350D or any model of Nikon, I just don’t have the money. Besides, my little camera gets the job done just fine. Sometimes I am lucky enough to get to borrow my mom’s camera – a Panasonic Lumix. It’s no Nikon, but it is a really good camera. The only images in my gallery that were taken with that camera so far, though, are the ones of Electra and Jonathan In my opinion, the camera doesn’t matter all that much. I think it’s how you use it that counts. I’ve seen people who shoot with Nikons produce really average shots, and I’ve seen some really mind-blowing shots taken with the same camera by a different person. It all just depends on the photographer. If you disagree, let me know why. I’d love to be able to point to the computer screen and say, ‘See, Mom? That’s why I need a new camera!’ ;-P But yes, that is my embarrassing secret. My camera is a piece of junk. But I don’t really think that should matter.

No one else I know will understand my camera frustrations so hopefully some of you out there in bubbleland might be able to sympathise with my pain… ;-) / (yes I have no life.. hehe) I am a firm member of the full frame or nothing camp of DSLR photographers. I have also been waiting for a DSLR that is affordable which I will only have to buy once. When the 5D came out it was close but not a camera I thought I could live with on a permanent basis and not having the funds at the time anyway I thought I’d wait. Besides that I really can’t justify an expensive short term investment so I’ve been using Velvia and a Nikon coolscan V film scanner while waiting for my dream camera to eventuate. When the 5D came out I thought as with most of their range it would be replaced in 18 months… then 2 years… then 3 years. The three year and customary August new model release came about today. So with bated breath I logged into dpreview and Canon today and with joy saw the promised releases but wait….... Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo where is the 5DmkII? What!? They’ve bought forward the 40D replacement by 6 months (a 50D), shoved a 15 megapickel APS-C sized sensor in an effort to placate the hordes of 5DmkII disciples? Since the digital age began Canon have never had a model last more than three years… why? Why are they not replacing this camera, it is overdue….. grumble, winge, grumble, be pathetic, be more pathetic, grumble….. etc. OK change of tack, looks like I need to get myself a 1DsII or maybe a 1DsIII (if I can stretch the funds). Problem is I wanted some good glass too and that will blow that one away and I’ll have an amazing camera limited by mediocre glass. I’ll get there one day. Thanks for listening to me rave on, I feel better now. Keep smiling Yours in no life patheticness trav

Most won’t care but for those that do, yesterday I got my very first L lens the 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. Can’t wait to start shooting with such a wide and bright lens of such amazing quality. Birth details / Time: 12:10pm 15/9/2008 / Weight: 635gms / Width: 98 degrees It’s got this lovely red stripe around it and the zoom mechanism doesn’t make the front of the lens go in and out it’s all internal. Also came with a lens hood and bag. He’s a big boy makes my 24-85mm looks like it was born prem. Proud parent. trav

Looking to buy new Digital SLR and need some advice from all you photography buffs out there… I have narrowed down to 2 brands Nikon and Canon…. Choices – / Nikon D80 or / Nikon D200 Canon 40D or / Canon 450D Here is the catch. My dad is giving me 3 lenses from his old Canon analogue SLR. They are a Canon FD 35-70 – 1.4 and a Tamron 85-210! and a Canon 50. Would it be prudent to perhaps stick with Canon for that reason? Or can I not use them on the new anyway??? Or is Nikon just better. Any ideas about Pentax…. I am looking at good for low light photography and not mega expensive. Need advice from people who are happy or unhappy with their cameras and what is good about them. Also which is the best all rounder lens for wedding photography? Thanks for any help guys =D

Firstly I have to say that I had my new 40D unpacked in a flash. The hardest part of putting it all together was working out how to get the strap on … I was never a girl guide so I am not good at knots and had to call out for help. The second hardest part was installing the software as it conflicted with something else on my computer. We are still not sure exactly what and the Canon techies seem to have no idea either. I read the first page of the instruction manual and carefully ticked all the boxes, making sure that all the parts were included. Then I got so excited that I skipped the rest of the manual and rushed down to our local duck pond to have a play. It was a hot summer’s day and I wasn’t the only one out having fun. The ducks were extra frisky, prancing and preening and spreading their wings. / / Within an hour I had used all of the memory in my camera and shot over 960 pictures. When my husband asked me what happened, I sheepishly replied that the ducks were having sex and it was really quite exciting. There was so much that I didn’t know about the process and I learnt so much. Then I pointed to the three ducks and explained that two of the ducks were boys because they were strutting their stuff and vying for her attention and the third duck was just a slutty girl who made her back go flat in the water like a surfboard so they could just climb on board. I thought I had got some really cool “nature” shots but sadly, snow white feathers flare on black polluted water so the shots didn’t turn out too well. Perhaps I should have read past the first page in the manual. ROFL Here are some more of the shots from the pond using my 17-85mm lens. / Today was the second day with my new camera and what a big day it was. Firstly we had the big rally in the city – The Walk Against Warming, which is something we have participated in as a family since its inception. Then it was off to the water again .. this time a dog park near the beach. Thankfully no dogs were mating but when I was bending over to take a close up of a starfish, a small black dog rushed under my camera and licked the lens. Luckily Ben (from Fletchers Fotographics) has made me put skylight covers on the lenses for protection. Thanks Ben.:-) Here are some shots from the rally … / And of the beach/city … / / I am going to learn a little more about my camera before I start loading shots into my gallery. As I am such a busy body, I already know that I need a longer lens. I am yet to try out the macro lens that I also bought and will blog about it on another day. Right now I have cramping in my right hand and need to give it a rest. So far I am having an absolute ball with the Canon 40D and learnt so much. Sadly I haven’t learnt anything about the camera but I do know an awful lot about ducks. Cheers Sooz

[EDITED 15/09/2007] Some words have been replaced, a few sentences have been restructured, and my opinion/thoughts have been changed. Thanks to all my commentors for giving constructive and interesting information on the issues within this post: The original post begins here: The reason I mention this is because of a conversation I had with staff at the ‘The Photographic Wholesalers’ (47 Hutt Street Adelaide) yesterday (7.Sept.2007) whilst purchasing my new tripod . (Read my review on both the Manfrotto Tripod and Ball-Joint Head .) Whilst talking with staff, I was asked the all important question: What are you shooting with? It’s a standard question when photographers congregate. Brand is important to some of us, almost like it’s our religion! This is how the conversation progressed: Me: ‘EOS 400D’ / Him: ‘You like it?’ / Me: ‘It does what I need. Oh, I’ve seen the 10D, 1D, etc, but I’ve discovered I don’t really need them. Yeah, they have tonnes of great extra features, but I am having fun getting this camera to create the image for me.’ / Him: ‘And what software do you use?’ / Me: ‘I don’t manipulate my work unless I need to. I use some freeware for compression and cropping, but that’s about it. / Photoshop is not an absolute, but I understand how it can help enhance a photograph. I much prefer to manage the features of a camera to create the result I want. Manual focus and manual settings are my style.’ / Him: ‘Music to my ears! Someone who gets it.’ / Me: blushing ‘Yeah, well, I just prefer to learn how it all works, rather than compensating adjusting.’ Or something like that. I’ve added a few bits where I cannot recall the exact words. I’ll doubt they will dispute the direction of the conversation. [And you can see the words I have adjusted since I originally posted this article!] I am a photographer. / I pride myself on knowing or learning how to use my camera to shoot the image I want, not manipulating it afterward and hopefully not needing to manipulate nor modify the image. Our This profession is all about knowing how to utilise the camera to create the effects, find the image, and show people what we see through our eyes. Shooting with a camera-phone or compact-camera may not necessarily produce the same result. When I say I shoot with a Canon EOS 400D, it is so my clients, buyers and fellow-photographers can judge assess my ability inline with the tools I use. I’m adding this information to my profile on all my galleries. It’s not about being better than anyone, it’s about professionalism personal preferences. Disclaimer: Yes, some of my early work on RB has been manipulated. Some will be replaced in late November this year when I reshoot them, whereas most will remain as is.
