Hosier Lane in Melbourne, Australia. A result of 9 images (3 HDR’s) done in Photomatix. Merged the HDR’s in photoshop using automate > Photomerge. The writing is on the wall – if you can see it, you can’t read it. I passed this sculpture so many times. You have to. It is made of stainless steel and placed in one of the busiest Wellington streets, in the perfect position to capture the colorful lights of the city after daylight, the nightglow of the capital. The ‘Invisible City’, as it’s called, is the gigantic panel of Braille text that highlights the communication gap between those who can’t see and the rest of us. The post is designed to remember all the folks, my countrymen and yours, the often invisible part of society, all those who finish schools, who work, play music, do sports, pay taxes, have and raise children, to the benefit of us all.

What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

Filling up a glass of water and noticed this out of the kitchen window. Literally ran outside with a t-shirt and slippers on to get this before it went. First few shots were a golden amber in color then it went to this before it disappeared. Only snapped about 30 bracketed shots before it was gone. Gonna go a repot my orchid while this is uploading (and I finished it, thanks dial-up). Hope you like it. Please critique… print available here and on my website. Pulled out of the archives from a while ago… A 3 exposure HDR in Photomatix software. This photo was taken with my old Canon 300D, I had a fair bit of trouble deciding what white balance to go with but I think it worked out ok. Yesterday I reported the swarming of thousands of these beautiful creatures in the Mount Burr Forest in the South East of the State. This lot were clustered around the nut on a bolt holding the side plate onto a powerpole. Interestingly I went back today and nearly all of the tens of thousands had disappeared back to wherever they came from. What a magical twenty four hours this was. Thanks to Biggzie (see his site for some great images) I can now tell you that they are the: Common Spotted Ladybird / Harmonia conformis Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with speedlight.

Another trip out to the swarming of ladybirds that I have been reporting on at Mount Burr South Australia. This time we took them flowers!!!!!! The thousands I have posted on recently have dwindled to small groups of twenty to thirty and are slowly moving on. They climbed aboard our flowers which gave us opportunities to take some images a little different to those uploaded over the last few days. I promise the ladybirds shots will stop soon but they are just such brilliant works of nature that I can’t help keep going back whilst they are there. Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with two stage extension tubes and speedlight.

3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! During last weeks trip to Melbourne I went on an evening stroll and found this line of columns and light at the front of the General Post office (GPO) in the heart of the city. The lines and shapes made for an interesting almost abstract look. The tunnel effect here puzzled me at first as there seemed to be a line working bottom right to top left as well. It was as if the bottom left of the shot separated itself from the rest of the image…...maybe it was just because I was tired by then!!!!! Now that I look at it again is it a line that works from bottom Left to the right???? Lines – lines – lines…..... Canon 400D – 17-85 lens.

More bendy lens work….soz, I’m a bit obsessed at the mo Canon 5D Mk II, bendy lens. What makes me laugh about this is it looks like someone was in the second from bottom car taking a photo, and the flash has gone off….they’ll have a wonderful image of the inside of that car… More halftone bendy work
