In the Native American Sioux language Hanyewi means Moon Translated by Chief Yellow Lark – 1887 Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds / Whose breath gives life to the world, hear me / I come to you as one of your many children / I am small and weak / I need your strength and wisdom May I walk in beauty / Make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. / Make my hands respect the things you have made / And my ears sharp to your voice. / Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children. The lessons you have written in every leaf and rock / Make me strong! / Not to be superior to my brothers, but to fight my greatest enemy….myself Make me ever ready to come to you with straight eyes, / So that when life fades as the fading sunset, / May my spirit come to you without shame. Another in my series of shots of the Newcastle Baths, the adjoining canoe pool and surrounding beaches. Today the weather was windy but sunny and so the ocean gave off the most beautiful blue colouring. This shot is similar to my previous one however you will note the canoe pool has water in this one and the pool covers a more total area of the photo. Always a challenge and always a spot to keep going back to. This shot was taken with the Nikon D80 using the 55-200 mm lens on landscape setting. / / ALSO IN THIS SERIES /

In Northern Minnesota we took a canoe trip in Voyageurs National Park. The day we arrived it was raining lightly and a very heavy fog sat over the lakes and rivers. It seemed our September vacation was not off to a very pleasant start. While standing on the dock waiting for our boat to come and shuttle us to Kettle Falls on the US/Canadian border, I took this picture of a small waterfall coming into the Ash river and the autumn colors reflecting off the water. The next three days were gloriously sunny and mild. The fall leaves were stunning and the blue water of the park lakes was truly just like a dream.

A farm’s hot summer, an exploring child and his dog in beckoning hidden outerreaches, the bow of an overturned red canoe behind them in the stream. / A father runs from his pickup truck across a field in answer to their dog’s barking, to his son who’s been safely pulled from the water to the stream’s bank. I’m not sure why I painted this, but it has something to do with everything being all right after all. I wanted the trees and sky in on the emergency, a kind of frantic air that’s offset by the calmness of the waiting family dog, who knew what he was doing and how to do it. And a child who will do it all again tomorrow.
