I took Serena out on a walk around the farm yesterday and Mica followed her around. Serena is an eight year old Bernese Mountain Dog. Mica is a nine year old kitty that we have had since birth because we rescued a pregnant female cat. The mother cat and her other kittens found a new home together and Mica stayed with us and all our other critters. Serena loves cats and our cats all love her. In less than a second Mica spotted a bird and was off only to return awhile later to continue the walk. ~Update / July 9, 2009 Mica passed away of old age this past winter :( She was 16 years old and just passed away in her sleep one night. I will always have this and other photos of her along with some amazing memories.

Cane Corso (CC) :: Where Size, Power, Balance and Movement merge into the Ideal! / These dogs are classic Mastiffs without the loose skin of other related Mastiff breeds and were once used as cattle drivers. The Corso is a working breed and due to its history of boar hunting, guardian of people and farms, and butcher’s dog, they are required to function under high levels of stress. They are bred for strength, agility, temperament, endurance and, above all, companionship. Cane Corsos originating from the country of origin (Italy) tend to possess a more outgoing, stable temperament than their American counterpart. Cane Corsos are extremely loyal to their family and very aloof with strangers. They are a large breed of dog and take up lots of space on the couch, in the house and in the car. They drool and prefer to wipe their faces on their owners pants. Corsos like to sit close to their family and will sit on your feet, lean against you, often lay their heavy head in your lap. They like to follow you where ever you go and be a part of whatever you do. A cute, eight-week-old Corso puppy will soon turn into a large, dominant dog. That’s why it is very important that Corso get an early basic obedience education and live in a household that uses positive reinforcement and reward based training. Allow it to play, but never to jump! Trust me, you don’t want a 100++ pound mass of muscles jumping on you! Time, Commitment and Patience have their Rewards! The newest addition to our family, Stewie, our 8-week old Great Pyrenees puppy, is chilling out here after his first bath and blow dry, hanging with Daddy on the couch. Stewie is a runt and will likely be 1/2 the size of a “normal” GP adult male, which will still make him about as big as a Golden Retriever or German Shepherd. Stewie likes to wrap his arms around my neck when I hold him and lays his head on my shoulder, and I rock him just like a baby. This is a little girl named Emily and one of my American Pit Bull Terrier puppies Scarlet. Emily and her parents, 3 sisters and 1 brother came to visit my kennel to look at the puppies. It was a fun time at the kennel with 5 kids running all over!! LOL Scarlet had been in the pool and was all wet….but Emily didn’t care at all. She just gave her some big hugs and kisses. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, agile and well-suited to active working environments. They are often deployed in various roles such as police work, guarding, search and rescue, therapy and in the military. Based on 2006 American Kennel Club statistics, German Shepherd Dogs are the third most popular breed in the United States with 43,575 registrations. They can also be found working as guide dogs for the blind. Despite their suitability for such work, German Shepherds can also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. They enjoy being around people and other animals, although socialization is critical for young puppies in order to prevent aggressive and dangerous behavior. German Shepherds are well-suited to obedience, with advanced and prestigious titles available to test both the handler and dog in various schutzhund trials. The proper English name for the breed is German Shepherd Dog (a literal translation from the German Deutscher Schäferhund) but they are usually informally referred to as GSDs or as “German Shepherds”. In addition, the sobriquet police dog is used in many countries where the GSD is the predominant or exclusive breed used by the police force. Anti-German sentiment was still high in the wake of World War I (1914 – 1918), and change of German-oriented names in the UK – including that of the Royal Family – were common at the time when a few dogs were taken to Britain and the United States. In 1919, the English Kennel Club gave the breed a separate register. Since it was feared that the name German Shepherd Dog could be an impediment, the name Alsatian was introduced, from Alsace, a traditionally German-speaking French area on the west bank of the Rhine which had been annexed by the German Empire in 1870 but restored to France in 1918. This name is still used in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the Commonwealth. Only in 1977 did the British Kennel Club authorize the breed to be known again as the German Shepherd Dog. This is a shot of one of my American Pit Bull Terrier puppies…Littlegirl…giving her new Chihuahua friend a ride in a toy car in my yard in Amherst, Virginia. :)) My friend Kristen came by with her three kids and this cute little long haired Chihuahua. What a day of fun we had.
