I don’t know all the details yet, but I’m a bit excited so I’m writing about it anyway. Two of my pinholes, Lanes around Wellington St and Half Moon Bay, have been accepted into the AIPP Pinhole Australia exhibition that’s part of the VIVID National Photography Festival program. They will be hanging in Parliament House in Canberra. Blah de blah, that’s all for now. I am going to go high five a cushion or something… Also I will put on some socks.

Autumn is an ideal time to travel leisurely by car in eastern Australia with temperatures being mild and the days generally calm. Recently had the pleasure of a 2300 kilometre road trip to capture autumn images in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. Having never embarked on a specific autumn photographic journey before, it was an experience that I’d like to highly recommend to Australians and visitors to Australia. Most visitors to Australia follow the well-worn coastal routes, but to see the best of autumn in Australia, you generally need to travel inland for the amazing colours, scenery and magical light that exists during April/May. Trust you enjoy this small sample of autumn images taken in Australia during late April and early May 2008. All autumn images for sale at Redbubble Cheers folks. / Bright – Victoria / Mount Buffalo – Victoria / National Carillon – Canberra, Australian Capital Territory / Bega – New South Wales / Cann River Church – Victoria

Well, after pulling up nicely from the Puffing Billy race a week ago, I thought I’d line up for the Mother’s Day Fun Run in Canberra on Sunday. This particular Fun Run raises money for breast cancer research. I am happy to contribute to this cause, as breasts are WELL worth saving, in my humble opinion… Turning up an hour early to register, I discovered that there is but one word to describe this fun run. Pink. Pink ribbons. Pink outfits. Pink capes. Pink showbags. Even a pink completion medal… After a few mix-ups, my directionally challenged housemate arrived. He had originally suggested doing this run, which would be his first ever fun run, but now he was getting cold feet. I told him to put his shoes on. Bit frosty, these Canberra mornings… He wanted to chicken out of the ten kilometer run and opt for the five. I brought the big guns out early. Nothing like calling a twenty-three year old, six-foot three guy a girlie wuss to get ‘im fired up… Being blokey kinda men, we eschewed the 10 minute aerobic workout on offer, preferring a little manly stretching and macho talk. What is ‘manly stretching’? I have no idea. I guess it involves talking about football and not looking at anyone’s privates… We even resisted enthusiastic encouragement to have our faces painted in the face-painting tent. Doesn’t EVERY fun run have a face painting tent…?? We assembled around the start line in a clump of friendly, talkative runners and did the customary Packed Footpath Shuffle when the gun went off. About three minutes later my housemate said “Jesus you run fast…” and dropped off the back. Now, at this point I feel I must explain. My housemate is eighteen years younger than I am. He is three inches taller. He has teeth so bright he has been banned from smiling within five kilometers of Sydney airport to avoid distracting pilots of landing planes. He has a six-pack that is NOT hiding inside a blubber-based esky (which is where I keep mine – for safety, of course). In deference to his perfect looks, we shall call him Ken and hope that one day he finds his Barbie… So, to have this guy admit to being unable to keep up with a forty-something year old decrepit a mere three minutes into a fifty minute run. Well. Nice… Showing exceptional restraint, tact and diplomacy I replied “Shit mate, I’m only warming up!” and skipped off into the distance, singing Eye Of The Tiger to myself… The race is over two laps of a course. Half way through the second lap the field had spread out far enough that if I wanted to pass someone, I had to really earn it. I sidled up next to a guy a little older, leaner and harder-looking than myself. We paced each other for a kilometer or so – neither able to blow the other away. Some uber-fit girlie went streaming past us at one point. He looked at me and said “God, we’re just two snails slidin’ down a piece ‘a glass, aren’t we?” / “Yeah. Hand me my walking frame will ya?” / We had a chuckle. Not much of one, mind. We were both knackered from trying to beat each other. We both strode past the nine kilometer sign and I’d had enough. Giving him a cheerful wave I bolted, hoping like hell I could hang on for just five more minutes. I was glad he could not see my face. The wave might have been cheerful but my face looked like a badly deformed, overripe tomato… I crossed the line in fifty minutes – a little better than I’d hoped. Nice. I warmed down, had a stretch (manly, of course) and wandered back along the path to wait for Ken. A bright glow through the trees some twenty minutes later indicated to me that Ken was coming and that he was smiling. Or baring his teeth anyway. I popped the sunnies on and called encouragement as the polar-white grimace jogged past. When he had finished, we went and collected our pink showbags. Ken proudly wore his first ever completion medal for the rest of the day. He didn’t even care that it was pink and covered in flowers. He was a happy chappy. It was another great run. May I never have to stop.

A young girl of 15 was yesterday killed in a car accident in Canberra’s south. A head on collision with another car in the early hours of the morning. She was pronouced dead at the scene and both drivers of the two cars (18 and 23) are in hospital in a serious condition. This death hits a little close to home. The 15 year old who has passed away was a student and my daughter’s high school. While they weren’t particularly close to her, they knew her, passed her at school, at the shops and interacted with the same group of friends. It has hit my eldest daughter hard (she’s nearly 15), the reality that a life can be over in the blink of an eye. She’d only seen her at school the day before. I can’t begin to imagine what this girls parents are feeling or her sister (who is the same age as my youngest). My heart goes out to the family, even though I only met the mother once. I held my girls tight last night and told them I don’t know what I’d do if it were one of them. I’ve let them know how it scares me now that they are meeting older kids with cars, how I worry about them getting in the car with someone who has been drinking or worse, taking any kind of drug. I’ve let them know they can ring me at anytime to collect them if need be no questions asked, I would prefer that to the police visit this girls mother would have recieved in the early hours of Saturday morning. This is the first time my girls have had to deal with the death of someone they know. Not someone they even knew well and it has affected them more than I thought it would. My only hope as a parent is that my daughter’s can learn from the tradgedy. To be careful who they get in a car with, to always wear a seatbelt (this girl wasn’t wearing hers). My sincere sympathies and condolences to the family. I can’t begin to image what they are going through

Hey people! I just decided to chuck a photo up for sale. I put up the photo I took at Lake Burley Griffin because it’s the image that has had the most views and comments and favourites and all that jazz. I don’t really expect any sales to actually happen but I’m not paying for them to be sold and it’s not as if I’m losing anything. so why not? I’ll upload some more later. Just though I should let everyone know because who knows maybe someone will buy something.. and I hope so too :)

  • Paintings in Canberra exhibition

This is what Omary has prepared for the Create to Advocate Art Exhibition, which is officially opened next Tuesday in Parliament House, Canberra. You can see omary’s_Paintings= which are in the exhibition I was an established artist in Tanzania and made my living from selling my paintings. Now I am in Australia, I have been looking for ways to promote my art. I was the main artist in a recent Refugee Art Show in Sydney and that encouraged me. At the moment I am living in Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. Two of my paintings that are in the Create to Advocate Art Exhibition were inspired by memories of where I lived in Tanzania. One is my village in the west of Tanzania, another a river further south, where I studied at school. A third one is more about how I feel about my present and future, and not having a choice. It is like I am fighting enemies from three directions; I fled Tanzania to face further dangers in South Africa, and then have encountered problems here instead of finding a solution. A friend suggested I enter art competitions and showed me the Create to Advocate website. I saw what other artists had done and looked at the prizewinners work. I was attracted by the ideas of peace, justice and overcoming poverty and thought it is good to enter the competition to show how I can contribute to Australian art and society. I have a great desire to fight poverty and being involved in the Make Poverty History Campaign is a valuable opportunity to express myself through my art to people and the world. My art is about the issues of poverty and justice and matches the aims of the exhibition and the themes of the Millennium Development Goals. My painting “Morning” promotes gender equality. It shows how hard women work, especially in situations of poverty. “Ruaha River” points to the importance of caring for our environment and providing safe water. “The End” can remind people we can do nothing alone: we need co-operation and partnership to have a chance to overcome our enemies, such as injustice, poverty and persecution. What I like about the Make Poverty History and Micah Challenge campaign is that they are serious about co-operation and action. I think that Australia’s response to poverty should be to support more NGOs, increase foreign aid and focus on education. I remember when I was a student in Tanzania, once I tried to enter a drawing competition but I had to walk on foot for 2 or 3 hours to get there, so I arrived late and didn’t do well. So I am happy my artwork has been selected for this exhibition and for the chance to become better known and maybe to sell my paintings or win a prize. I think being involved in this exhibition will educate me more about the issue of poverty. I hope that I will be welcomed to this country so I can belong and contribute my art to Australia.
