Early morning on the lake. / Lake Burley Griffin – Canberra Australia. HDR photomatix and photoshop.
As I was just finishing up taking photos with a friend of mine I saw this scene and just couldn’t resist. I quickly set up Automatic exposure bracketing just the be sure and this is the result. Shot: Canon 400D + Canon 10-22 f/3.5 – f/4.5 @ 1/200, 1/400 (-1), 1/100 (+1), f/10, ISO100. Post-Processing: I used Photomatix to blend the three exposures and then applied some curves and levels masks as well as some sharpening in Adobe Photoshop CS3.
Cygnet II is a unique black & white portrait featuring a Cygnet with its family in Commonwealth Park, Canberra. Behind the scenes / Spring is a time to celebrate new life and new beginnings as we emerge from the cold gloom of Winter. In Canberra, the Floriade festival is an annual celebration of Spring, attracting over 300,000 visitors every year. Aside from enjoying the colourful floral displays, visitors are greeted every year by Commonwealth Park’s resident Swans who, like proud parents, do laps of the park’s lake showing off their Cygnets. I like the unique composition of this portrait, with the Swan and cygnet out of focus in the foreground adding depth to the image. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm Artwork / This is a striking and unique portrait that is sure to make a fantastic addition to your home. Ideal as a framed fine quality print or canvas, let this heart-warming celebration of new life become a focal point in your home. © 2008 A Spence. All Rights Reserved

Morning mist rising off Lake Burley Griffin on a brisk Winter Morning is a classic and quite picturesque sight in Canberra. On this morning, I photographed a crew of rowers who appear as ghostly figures as they disappear into the mist. This is one of my earlier images, taken with a fairly simple point and shoot, but the capture was spot on despite the difficult light conditions. I cropped it in post processing, converted it to black and white and made very minor contrast adjustments. © 2008 A Spence. All Rights Reserved.

Honeyeater captures a view of one of these beautiful yet shy birds at the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Behind the scenes / Too many times, I’ve missed a great shot of birds like this one because of hesitation. I’ve waited, my finger poised on the shutter button for the perfect shot. To capture this image, I tried a different tactic, shooting many frames rapidly capturing the bird in a variety of poses. This was one of the successful shots, capturing the bird in a fantastic posture it held for only a split second. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm | 1.4x Extender Artwork / This is a striking image and an ideal addition to any decor. The subject creates a focal point while soft colours ensure it isn’t imposing. Take it home, to the office or share it as a gift! © 2009 A Spence. All Rights Reserved

Hey, it’s 0630, it’s cold, it’s very foggy out so what do you do? You pull up the doona and stay in bed go out and take pictures of course! 3-frame HDR, tone mapped in Photomatix and converted in CS4
I have the misting fog irrigation system at the Australian National Botanic Gardens to thank for this one … I was in the rainforest gully section when the mist jets came on further up the gully and rolled its fog toward me … the way it played with the late afternoon sunlight made me gasp. No textures added here … though it is a 3-frame HDR to try and capture the stairs which were almost in complete darkness. The scene reminded me of a dream I had … still does. Do you dream in colour? I do.
