  • I took this shot of a very hazardous stretch of coastline on the very southern tip of Newfoundland just below a lighthouse. The winds were so high that day and the sea was whipped into such a boiling cauldron, my imagination was taken away. As I stood there and watched I could almost visualize a ghost ship emerging from the fog, the lighthouse that stood just above me was blowing its foghorn which added a sense of eerieness to the already somber scene. The winds lashed at me attempting to pluck me into the sea as a offering of peace for disturbing this epic battle between land and sea. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • The Tragic History Behind These Shots / I just had to revisit the abandoned farmhouse where I shot the image The Tenant / / / / This is a view from the kitchen looking in from the outside… the windows are all beat out of the house and you cannot get to the kitchen from the inside because the floor is unstable and you’ll probably end up in the basement. So I had to improvise and go outside to get this shot. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More In This Series / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Featured in Image Writing – January 28, 2009 I was visiting my SIL this morning when I saw this lovely little House Finch perched on a cedar tree branch outside her back window. Like most photographers I do not go very many places without my camera :) I am always quite excited to capture birds I don’t see on my own property. Originally only a resident of Mexico and the southwestern United States, they were introduced to eastern North America in the 1940s. The birds were sold illegally in New York as “Hollywood Finches”, a marketing artifice. To avoid prosecution, vendors and owners released the birds. They have become naturalized; in some unforested areas, they have displaced the native Purple Finch and nonnative House Sparrow. In 1870, or before, they were introduced into Hawaii. During courtship, the male will touch bills with the female. He may then present the female with choice bits of food and, if she imitates the posture of a hungry chick, actually feed her. The male also feeds the female during the breeding and incubation of both eggs and young —-—-—-—-—- / Camera details: / Canon Rebel EOS XTi with 70-200mm f/4L IS lens @ 160mm / SS 1/320, AP mode, f/4, ISO 400 / Photo was taken on January 26, 2009 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. / -—-—-—-—-- / / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

  • ARCHITECTURE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT / Architecture is to do with the designing of buildings and structures, but in its broader meaning it also includes the design of our complete built environment. It can be found in outback areas, on mountain peaks, almost anywhere on the land, even on the sea in the form of oil rigs and it surrounds us in our places of abode. We tend to take it for granted and complain when its appeareance doesn’t suit our taste. Architecture provides us with shelter, places to work, gives us points of reference in our urban wilderness, but most important of all, it provides a fundamental basis for the way we live. Architecture is ephemeral, can be a thing of great beauty, and its elements can be pillaged and used as building blocks by successive generations. Past civilizations are often known through their achievements in architecture and certain works have become cultural, political and artistic icons. Presumably a family once lived in this little house at Fernie, British Columbia. It now stands derelict and isolated, yet it seems to exist as a monument to the toil of hard working rural people anywhere. The image was captured during summer 2008 towards the end of a photographic journey through the Canadian Rockies. Thanks for taking the time to view my photos and feel free to comment. You are welcome to visit my photography website My most recent publication ‘ARCHITECTURE WITH CHARACTER’ includes images of this rural house. Click on image below for a preview.

  • FEATURED IN THE CANADA GROUP / I was intrigued to locate and photograph this old home, which now sits empty, after hearing stories about one of this region’s most famous citizens. Harry Lee, a locomotive engineer, apparently retired from the CP railway in his early sixties to take care of his ailing father struggling with dimentia, who lived with him. There are many stories of his father’s “unusual behaviour” which kept Harry very busy indeed. Harry collected a pension from the Canadian Pacific Railway until his death at 102 years of age….a highly unusual accomplishment. The following historical information was obtained from “Vanishing BC”: / http://www.michaelkluckner.com/bciw.html “Reputedly the oldest building in North Bend, British Columbia the house occupied by Harry Lee the legendary locomotive engineer, until his death at age 102 (in 2004) stands on 1st Street on the opposite side of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline from the site of the CPR hotel. / “It is a classic little 1-1/2 storey house that may have been a CPR design-all the land on the river side of the tracks was and is owned by the CPR and leased to the occupants, who own their buildings. The original occupant is unknown. / Harry Lee, who lived in the house for as long as anyone can remember, is the son of pioneers at Keefers-upstream on the same side of the river, where there are still areas called Upper Lee and Lower Lee, although all the historic buildings are apparently demolished. Lee’s father, an Englishman, was a farmer who supplied milk to the railway. The house retains Lee’s personality—for example, the metal cooler (vented to the outside like a meat safe) is plastered with old Irish Sweepstakes tickets.” layers and textural effects were applied in CS4 /
