Canadian geese taking off in the morning from Prospect Lake, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. I used my 70-300 lens for this capture, so they look like they’re really close. I also added some dry brush in PSE 3.
I came to the pond loaded down with vitamin-enriched, nutrient fortified stale bread on this day, and my little goosie friends seemed quite pleased!! The babies were already growing up … but still so adorable. This shot was taken on May 22, 2008 with the Nikon D40x, using the 70-300 lens. Shutter 1/500, aperture f/5.0, exposure 0.00, iso 200.

I went out after coyotes and wound up with goslings (baby geese). I ran into a family of 2 parents and 4 goslings. Canada Geese are monogamous and mate for life, and are very attentive parents. Wherever they went, one parent lead the way and the other parent brought up the rear, keeping a close eye on babies everywhere they went. They were very protective when they noticed a snapping turtle in the water. They’d chase away other geese and RWBBs that got too close, and would hiss and posture at any dog-walkers and dogs that got too close. I tried to keep my distance, mostly out of respect, but partly because I didn’t want to explain getting beat up by a bird. One of the goslings was particularly adventurous – I have the most photos of him. He’d be the one leading the way, out in front of the others, and the first one to wander away from the family. Mom and dad goose had their hands full keeping track of him. The same gosling as the last one – out of the 4 new goslings in the goose family, this little guy was the adventurous one. The other 3 would stick close to mom and dad, but this one would stray a little, which made it fairly easy to isolate him for some good behavior shots. I have about 50 shots of him that I liked (check my web site for more in the series), but these last 2 are my favorites. Canada Geese 9which this little guy is) are mostly herbivores, and he’s going to town tearing off bite-sized leaves for breakfast.
