Canadian geese taking off in the morning from Prospect Lake, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. I used my 70-300 lens for this capture, so they look like they’re really close. I also added some dry brush in PSE 3.
I came to the pond loaded down with vitamin-enriched, nutrient fortified stale bread on this day, and my little goosie friends seemed quite pleased!! The babies were already growing up … but still so adorable. This shot was taken on May 22, 2008 with the Nikon D40x, using the 70-300 lens. Shutter 1/500, aperture f/5.0, exposure 0.00, iso 200.

I went out after coyotes and wound up with goslings (baby geese). I ran into a family of 2 parents and 4 goslings. Canada Geese are monogamous and mate for life, and are very attentive parents. Wherever they went, one parent lead the way and the other parent brought up the rear, keeping a close eye on babies everywhere they went. They were very protective when they noticed a snapping turtle in the water. They’d chase away other geese and RWBBs that got too close, and would hiss and posture at any dog-walkers and dogs that got too close. I tried to keep my distance, mostly out of respect, but partly because I didn’t want to explain getting beat up by a bird. One of the goslings was particularly adventurous – I have the most photos of him. He’d be the one leading the way, out in front of the others, and the first one to wander away from the family. Mom and dad goose had their hands full keeping track of him. The same gosling as the last one – out of the 4 new goslings in the goose family, this little guy was the adventurous one. The other 3 would stick close to mom and dad, but this one would stray a little, which made it fairly easy to isolate him for some good behavior shots. I have about 50 shots of him that I liked (check my web site for more in the series), but these last 2 are my favorites. Canada Geese 9which this little guy is) are mostly herbivores, and he’s going to town tearing off bite-sized leaves for breakfast. The Canada Goose is a national symbol of our country Often described as a powerful and majestic bird as it takes to the air. (Please check back in about eight to ten weeks.) Note. / This image promted a fellow Red Bubble artist to create the inspiring prose you see here. Hence the collaboration of Greg Smith, photographer and Ann-maree, writer. I was back out looking for coyotes (and coyote pups) early this morning, and again I saw not a single coyote. But I did run into the goose family again. I saw them a few days ago with only one parents, and still only one parent today (making me a little worried about the fate of that parent). The parents are very protective of the young, making me think that something (accident or predation) has happened to the other adult. This one parent is in overdrive as the only protector. The four goslings look healthy enough despite that. They’re about twice the size they were a week ago, but still very attached to the remaining parent. They’re very active and covering ground much more quickly than they did a week ago. The arrival of the Canada Geese heralds spring here in the north. And these goslings in a huddle promise all the hope, renewal, and joy of new life in this season of rebirth. / Of course there is always a rebel in each family and this little guy seemed to have a lot to say as I approached his nesting siblings. / Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens / May 16, 2009 Laval-Ouest, Quebec CANADA / See the whole family here A Family Looking To The Future Winner of the Canada Right Now, spring Canadiana challenge, June 2009 / Featured in Canadiana, June 2009 / Avatar for Canadiana, June 2009
