  • If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? -Shakespeare Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. For more information, please visit any of the following websites for first-hand accounts and ways you can help save the seals. Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. • FEATURED IN THE CANADA GROUP / I was intrigued to locate and photograph this old home, which now sits empty, after hearing stories about one of this region’s most famous citizens. Harry Lee, a locomotive engineer, apparently retired from the CP railway in his early sixties to take care of his ailing father struggling with dimentia, who lived with him. There are many stories of his father’s “unusual behaviour” which kept Harry very busy indeed. Harry collected a pension from the Canadian Pacific Railway until his death at 102 years of age….a highly unusual accomplishment. The following historical information was obtained from “Vanishing BC”: / http://www.michaelkluckner.com/bciw.html “Reputedly the oldest building in North Bend, British Columbia the house occupied by Harry Lee the legendary locomotive engineer, until his death at age 102 (in 2004) stands on 1st Street on the opposite side of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline from the site of the CPR hotel. / “It is a classic little 1-1/2 storey house that may have been a CPR design-all the land on the river side of the tracks was and is owned by the CPR and leased to the occupants, who own their buildings. The original occupant is unknown. / Harry Lee, who lived in the house for as long as anyone can remember, is the son of pioneers at Keefers-upstream on the same side of the river, where there are still areas called Upper Lee and Lower Lee, although all the historic buildings are apparently demolished. Lee’s father, an Englishman, was a farmer who supplied milk to the railway. The house retains Lee’s personality—for example, the metal cooler (vented to the outside like a meat safe) is plastered with old Irish Sweepstakes tickets.” layers and textural effects were applied in CS4 /

  • A visit to Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Canada in early June afforded me a chance to capture this 2 image composite. Just a couple weeks prior, the lake was still frozen solid.
