A little while ago I promised I’d have some more news on our calendar dreaming soon – We’re not 100% there yet, still fiddling around with the final printing stock, size, ordering hanger material etc BUT it’s really close … I’ve made some calendars that everyone I show them to like, including some real life users ! So there’s good news, bad news and we need your help. / / The Good: We are looking at a 13 page, A3 sized 300 GSM calendar, wire bound for about $18USD ($20AUD) – Plus a dash of postage. They feel heavy and look nice. The Bad: Christmas is coming and we have too much to do – But, if there is enough demand “we’ll” ( read Justin ) will try and find a way to squeeze them in somehow. The Help: So what I’d ask you guys to do is help us by answering a couple of questions (in the comments or via BubbleMail to me is fine) 1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? / 2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? / 3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? / 4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. Ultimately I think we will do 1, 2 and 3 – But for this year we might have to compromise and I want to make sure we make the right choice to keep as many of you guys happy as we can ! James

This is a question I see on a regular basis in the forums; sometimes in the journal entries as well. I know that RB has posted this information in the forums, though for most new people it’s difficult to find. When you run a search from “my bubble” it doesn’t pick up forum threads, and if you aren’t a forum watcher (or don’t know the forums are there) you don’t even know you can search there. For anybody looking for the base information for required image sizes, the forum thread to see is in The Learning Centre Forum – FAQ listing posted by Peter What the post doesn’t tell you is that the various print sizes differ from image to image, based on the uploaded size of your image. Below are the minimum redbubble required pixels for printing, as well as 3 images of my own showing the uploaded pixel size, and the resulting printout size at redbubble. I hope this will help give an idea of what you’ll get from the image size you have. NB: if you have images that aren’t large enough for what you want, please see the end of the post for help redBubble Minimum Sizes for Prints Cards: 1300 pixels X 900 pixels Small prints: 1600 pixels X 2400 pixels / Med. Prints: 2160 X 3240 pixels / Large prints: 2560 pixels X 3840 pixels Posters small: 2500 pixels X 3500 pixels / Posters medium: 3500 pixels X 5000 pixels / Posters large: 5000 pixels X 7100 pixels Clothing: 2400 pixels X 3200 pixels Here are 3 of my uploads with the uploaded pixel dimensions, and what I can print from them: Strokes of the Lily (uploaded size 4200 X 5067) Cards / Matted Prints 9.6 X 11.5 / All Other Prints: Small 8 X 9.65, Medium 12 X 14.48, Large 16 X 19.3 / Posters: Small 16.5 X 19.9, Medium 23.4 X 28.2 (large is not available) Softest Dreams (uploaded size 7200 X 5023) Cards / Matted Prints 12.6 X 8.8 / All Other Prints Small 11.4 X 8, Medium 17.2 X 12, Large 22.9 X 16 / Posters Small 23.3 X 16.2, Medium 33 X 23, Large 46.8 X 32.6 On The Wind (uploaded size 3900 X 2571) Cards / Matted Prints 12 X 8 / All Other Prints Small 12 X 7.9, Medium 18 X 11.8, Large 24 X 15.8 / Poster Small 23.3 X 15.3 (other sizes not available because the uploaded file is not large enough) What You can Do if Your Images are Too Small Please have a look at the links below – these are various methods and instructions for increasing your image size so you can print the larger image sizes on redbubble. WARNING: image quality must be excellent in order to increase from small to large, so be sure your original sized image is of good quality. Increasing your images too much will cause artifacting that will show up in your large print. Basic Resizing Tutorial / How I Enlarge Images and Preserve Their Quality by Steven Love I know there are other image size tutorials, but I wasn’t able to find them doing a search. Please, if you have (or know of) other tutorials that are relative to this journal, post a link to them in the comments.

I’d like to make these journal posts a bit more colourful and nice to look at. Would you be happy for me to use images from your RedBubble portfolio to break up text or as examples in these posts? These journals may be cross posted to forums or other blogs too. Naturally linky love and accreditation is a given on all images used.

. . .unless you agree with the current administration and the conservatives, that is. If you do talk about these topics in a critical way, be prepared to be called unpatriotic and anti- American, dangerous, and much worse. You have the right to free speech, just be careful what you say. War in Iraq You may discuss the war in Iraq only if believe that the war is justified. If you aren’t with us, you are against us. And don’t you forget it! The War on Terror You may discuss the War on Terror only if you accept torture and detention of persons without the benefit of counsel or formal charges. If you agree that enemy combatants are not human beings and should be tortured, then this topic is okay. 09-11-2001 You may discuss this event only in terms of the dirty bastards that attacked us. Government Propaganda You have to believe the hype to talk about this issue. If you question the validity of the information, you may get your name on a list somewhere. Gay Rights You can not talk about this one unless you believe that gay people are going to be the destruction of civilization and they are going to hell. Women’s Rights Women have rights don’t they? They got the vote, what more do women want? Minority Rights Everyone is the same in America, right? If you talk about this issue be prepared for the “America is the land of opportunity” speech, followed by the “there is no discrimination in America” speech. Police Abuse This issue does not exist. The police do not abuse their powers and do not beat the shit out of people. They are all true American heroes, especially since 09-11-2001. We all know that if someone gets arrested, they are probably guilty anyway. Hunger & Poverty This discussion is limited to how people are poor because it is their own fault in some way. You have to include the fact that there are social welfare programs such as subsidized housing and food stamps so what are they complaining about? If you criticize the government for not adopting policies to stimulate the economy to create jobs, you will be told that poor people probably wouldn’t work anyway. Homelessness No one is to blame for homelessness. If you attempt to discuss this issue, you will be told in no uncertain terms that homeless people are crazy or lazy or both. Oh yes, you will be reminded that they like living in the streets. Erosion of Civil Rights You have the right to free expression, verbally and symbolically, just make sure that your speech is patriotic, pro-American, pro-war, and it does not question a single act by the government. If you follow these rules, you will enjoy the bountiful fruits of freedom embodied in the Constitution of the United States of America. I held up the mirror. They looked but did not recognize themselves. WAKE UP AMERICA You can post your views anonymously on Active Art Other things you can’t talk about . . . Anything Negative You can only talk about the good things in America. You must always present a positive image to the rest of the world. You will be invited to get the hell out if you are critical of your government and governmental institutions.

How Can Groups Help Me Get Exposure on Google?

If structured correctly, RedBubble Groups have the power to direct art lovers and patrons to your artwork. A patron focused on “classic car art” is going to search Google, Yahoo, MSN, … for “classic car art,” “classic car paintings,” etc. Kudos to you if your personal blog or website can easily be found from a Google, Yahoo or MSN search. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have a personal website or blog with stellar Google Page Rank (a “quality score” that Google assigns to your website and its associated pages; this score determines your visibility in search results). Thankfully, RedBubble has excellent Page Rank on Google. Use the power of RedBubble to steer customers to your Group by following these few simple rules: 1. Your Group’s name should aptly describe the content in the Group. For example, if your group is focused on “Classic Cars,” name the Group “Classic Car Artwork” or “Classic Car Art.” This name is far less fun than “Classic and Custom Rides,” but Google is interested in accuracy. Machines are indexing your web pages, and they’re unfortunately far less observant than a human (in this case). 2. Your Group description, your “About this Group,” should be equally descriptive. Start with your Group name and expand from there. For example: “Classic Car Art contains art images of classic cars, trucks, and other automobiles. Find photographs, paintings, etchings, and other art mediums available as art prints, T-shirts, calendars, greeting cards and more.” You can step outside of your marketing role for the next paragraph and “get personal,” e.g., “The Classic Car Art group contains hundreds of car enthusiasts from 1,000 different countries… we love cars because …” / Positive example – “Printmaking” Group Search Results 3. Next solicit viewers and visitors to link to your Group. A controlled link from a website outside “www.redbubble.com” can propel your Group’s visibility on search engines. If every Group member contributes a link (from a blog, website, public forum, social shopping site, etc.), you’ll note a higher search engine ranking for your Group more quickly. If you offer a text link to visitors and members, only link the words of the sentence that contain the Group name, e.g., in the sentence “View Classic Car Art on RedBubble.” link the words “Classic Car Art” only. If you offer an image and HTML link to your group, be sure to add an “Alt” tag. An Alt tag tells search engines what the image contains. For example: / “Fantasy Art” Search Results 4. And finally, here’s one last hint that artists dislike. “Untitled” is a terrible artwork title online. It does nothing to help Google index your image. Try “Studebaker Champion Car Photograph.” Boring, but effective. Following the above rules will help improve the your Group’s visibility in search engine results and will hopefully convert into sales for every group member. Results take time, as search engines crawl (or index) websites once monthly (sometimes more). This is a case where the Group’s work can produce results that far exceed any single person’s efforts. / “Street Photography” Search Results Any questions? Feel free to Bubblemail me. Jason Thanks!

Can You Help Me Out??
by Naomi FrostHi everyone. I’m writing this journal in the hopes of gaining some advice, hints and perhaps even hearing about your personal storie…
Hi everyone. I’m writing this journal in the hopes of gaining some advice, hints and perhaps even hearing about your personal stories of how to get into photography as a career. I’ve been a High School English/History/Drama teacher for almost 10years and I’m in need of a career change. At the moment I am only working part-time and won’t have to return to full time work until my youngest son starts school – that will be in 2 years. So I figure I’ve got 2 years to get myself organised. Financially, I’m not in a position to start up my own business therefore I’m going to need to find somebody who wants to employ me. My first questions relate to getting a portfolio/CV organised. What’s the best way to go about it? Do people still have portfolio’s with hard copies or is digital preferred? If hard copies, what size? What should I include in them? How diverse should they be???? Like I said, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, is anyone likely to employ a self-taught photographer?? I haven’t had any official educational training relating to photography, but I am a quick learner! Obviously I have skills as I am a teacher, but will this be enough? So…just hearing your personal stories will give me some ideas. Also, if you think I need a reality check please tell me. I don’t want to kid myself into thinking I could do this as a career if there really is no chance. I’d be much better off trying to convince myself to stay teaching! Thanks in advance for your advice. Oh, just one last thing…..anyone need an assistant???

Hi RB friends I have just been told that the college i go to is have a permanent exhibition room where i can put up images all year as opposed to just the end of the year – not sure how competitive it will be so i was wondering if you could help me. If you have the time would you tell me your favourite or what you think is my best image so far (if you want to say more than one, even better) – i am the worst decision maker in the world so this would be really helpful. Also, you may be a bit more objective. Thanks all for taking the time – really appreciate it. Bye for now / Debxxx

Where do creative talents come from? Can creativity be taught? This question has inspired philosophers, artists and academics. That ever-rolling nature vs nurture debate. Is it talent or is it training? Neurobiologists became intrigued by the subject after brain trauma patients reported previously undiscovered, and highly developed, creative talents. Which corners of the brain influence creativity? What holds it back or sets it free? Creativity popped onto the radar of corporates after research suggested employee productivity increases in a creative environment – that people will contribute more to their company if they’re given the chance to let their imaginations wander. But we are much more curious about your views on creativity… What do you think – can everyone be creative?

Point & Shoot or DSLR, you CAN get the Job Done and be proud
by Tim DennyI don’t write much for journals and all, but when my son Scott put out his journal on “Whatcah Packin” inspired me to put out a journal f…
I don’t write much for journals and all, but when my son Scott put out his journal on “Whatcah Packin” inspired me to put out a journal for the point & shoot photographer that might feel like their work is no match for the DSLR shooters. / / Prior to my Canon Eos 30-D I shot with the Canon Eos A2E film camera. I loved this camera very much. Scott was shooting with his original camera the Canon AE-1 Program and was doing well with it in his portrait photography etc. Because ot the cost of film and his old studio equipment starting to see their better days along with the pretty price it would be to upgrade it all he purchased a Sony Cyber Shot and backed off a bit from doing a lot of photography. / / I seen some of Scott’s work he did with the Sony Cyber Shot and was a bit attracted to the digital world of photography. At that time I was in no way going to get rid of my Eos A2E, but kind of wanted to do the digital thing, you know what I mean ? / Scott explained how user friendly the Sony Cyber Shot was so I ventured out to look for one like it. I wanted the flexablilty that I had with my A2E at the same time. I found the Sony Cyber Shot DSC – S75 with 3 mega picels, it had a manual mode along with S & A priority, but carried the heavy price tag of $700.00, a lot of cash by todays standards of a 3 mega pixel camera. None the less I purchased it and now I was a film / digital guy. As time pasted I was convinced that digital was the way to go and went full force into the digital world selling my Canon Eos A2E and purchasing the Canon Eos Rebel, the best I could afford at the time. Since my original SLR digital I have up graded to the Canon Eos 30-D, my present camera and see no need to further upgrade. The BIG HYPE of all these BIG mega pixel cameras have a lot of people fooled and some are purchasing them not knowing they got suckered by the sales persons all in the line of profit at the cost of the consumers pocket book. If your are going to do Big stuff and want to make billboard type photos, go for it, but on the other hand if you want to improve your photoraphy buy what you can afford and learn how to use it to the best of your ability and you will do some very nice, well done photos. / / The most important thing is read, read, read, then put what you have learned in the books to practise, practise, practise and you will arrive. Buy the big guns for the big bucks and don’t know how to use them or have no real need for them then what you have is a big gun, that’s it in a nut shell. / So, if all you have or if all you can afford is a point & shoot go for the gusto. / Remenber, Get Ready, Aim, Fire. In other words Read, learn to compose, and slowly press the shutter button. / Below please find a few of my examples of what can be done with a point & shoot camera. / / / / / / / / / If you have taken the time to read this very lengthly journal thank you very much. It was written all for the encouragment of all those point & shoot photographers that think their work is not good enough. / All photos can be improved with using a good photo software program, you will be amazed, when you take a size 72 resolution 6×3 image and work it into a 300 resolution 8×10 photo. I hope this article helps some. / / Oh, by the way. When I purchsed my Eos 30-D I gave Scott my Eos Rebel, he fell in love with it and soon upgraded to the Eos 30-D also. Today Scott has since upgraded his studio equipment and has re-kindled his love for photography. Also My son Jack Denny is here at RB and he too has upgraded his Nikon D50 to the Nikon D80 and is well on his way, folowing in his foot steps is his 12 year old son Tyler. I hope that some day soon we will see some of Tyler’s work. Thank you / Tim Denny

This was written and sent to me Christmas morning from our eldest son Danny, who couldn’t be home for Christmas this year, and when I read this the flood gates opened and there are no words to describe the LOVE I have for our children….... I love you with all my heart too son!! :-) I’m privledged to be your mom!!!! “The Thought That Counts” / You have always been there whenever you were needed, from a simple talk, motherly advice, or just a shoulder to cry on. All of the long talks on the patio, Christmas where I never went without, trips to baseball practice, and years of great parenting didn’t go without notice. I couldn’t think of a gift that could express or repay all the wonderful things you have done over the years so I thought I would give you “The Thought That Counts”. / You always had the answers for every problem I had or showed me how to get out of the trouble that was never too hard to get into, spoiled me every Christmas with more gifts than I knew what to do with or deserved, and love all year long. You also provided me with the knowledge of what a good wife, mom, and woman should be like. No one could or will ever take your place but thank you for being that example of what I need to look for so that I would make the right decision. / This Christmas is a little different with work and all the other things in life that get in the way but just remember… “It’s the Thought That Counts” The thoughts of the love that we have for one another, the memories of the past, the things that you have done for me and taught me to make my future better, and the memories that we are going to make together tomorrow. Today is just another day but it’s the thoughts that last forever. / I’m sorry that I can’t be there today but I just want you to know that just because this Christmas isn’t the usual that we’re used to doesn’t mean I have forgotten all the ones in the past. Thank you mom for all those wonderful memories and gifts from the past, but most of all thank you for the ones that made me what I am today. The ones that you can’t buy or wrap but that come from the love of a wonderful mother, I love you mom. Have a very Merry Christmas /

Bullshit! And this is why. I realised whilst reading other peoples comments that some people have been dissuaded from taking photos around interesting industrial locations. After all you must be a terrorist if you are taking a photo of a refinery, right! Thought I’d share some of my experiences on the subject as I am very often in these kinds of situations. My day job is photographing cars for magazines. I often do this in industrial locations and sometimes near sensitive installations such as refineries, ports, airports, you name it. I’ve been accosted by security guards, customs agents, police, ignorant old farts, you name it. I’m sure someone has already reported me to ASIO. I’m not a lawyer so don’t try to use me as an excuse if you end up in jail, do your own legal research, consult a lawyer if you think you need to, but this is the information I have obtained from both State and Federal Police when I’ve called to question the legality of such photography. Basically, there are no laws which prevent you photographing any property from a public place! Private properties such as shopping centres, subways, airports etc are a completely different story whilst within the property. The property owner sets the rules and you must abide or leave. But if you are outside the private property and on public land then shoot away. There can be local council By-Laws preventing photography, such as on some beaches, so it is worth asking the question if you think it might be relevant. However, any Police officer can do just about anything they like to you should they have good reason to suspect you of Terrorist activity. They can confiscate your camera, detain and question you. My solution to this is to have some forms of identification or samples of my work, in a small compact Folio, which can be shown to quickly convince them of my real intentions and identity. I have a Canon CPS card with my photo on it and business cards, or you could join one of the professional photographic associations (if you are eligible) some of which now offer membership cards for this very reason. There’s heaps of good information here on the legality of photography. It’s worth reading. / http://www.4020.net/words/photorights.php Having said that, you can’t then just do anything you like with the images because of trade mark and copyright issues with buildings and company logos, but that’s a whole different issue anyway. Just being allowed to take the photo doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like with it. My suggestion is that if you are going to be shooting in really questionable places AND you think you might have trouble with security, then try to contact the security people first and tell them who you are and what you are doing. DO NOT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION, you don’t need it! Just offer them the courtesy of letting them know who you are and what you are doing so that they don’t have to worry about you. Shell, for example, is a bit touchy about this kind of thing. I always call them and tell them of my intentions to shoot around their refineries. They appreciate it and we both play nicely. Same thing at airports such as Moorabin or Essendon. It works. Know your rights and don’t let the ignorant push you around. Of course never let things get out of hand. I can honestly say that I would be the first to call the police should a security guard get heavy handed with me. Not that it’s ever happened, and hopefully it never will. JJ
