  • I use to wake up and look out on this ocean in the early morning light, the sea was still with a silver and pink ting from the muted morning skys just before sunrise. I tried to capture this in this picture and it always gave me a warm and glowing feeling as I started my day. Fripp Island, South Carolina, USA This poem was written by Adgray site when she saw this picture. I hope you will go to her site and see all her other wonderful poems. Cool is the breeze that blows in the golden morning light / Shall we stroll the beach front at the ending of this night / Will we dare to brave the wind up upon the pier / Will you hold me will you kiss me will you wipe away my tear / And shall we watch the dawning never wanting the day light come / Holding still and shallow breaths willing away the sun / For then we shall be parting your world alien to mine / Where only secret sweet memories will last the test of time There is also a poster available with the poem and picture together. • Castle Sinclair Girnigoe was the home of the Sinclair family, Earls of Caithness. Girnigoe Castle was built around the late 14th to early 15th centuries on a rocky promontory, and was defended on the landward side by great ditches, spanned by drawbridges. The main feature of this castle is a three or four storey tower house, probably completed towards the end of the 16th century although there are the remains of 15th century buildings beneath it. During a period of redevelopment at the castle in the early 17th century, George Sinclair (4th Earl) obtained an Act of Parliament to change the name from Castle Girnigoe to Castle Sinclair. However it appears that the two names became associated with different parts of the castle leading to the impression that there were two castles on the site. The Campbells of Glenorchy briefly occupied the castle after emerging victorious from a battle with the Sinclairs. In 1680, George Sinclair of Keiss, who later became the 7th Earl, removed the Cambells by force, partially destroying the castle in the process. In recent years the ownership of the castle has been returned to the Earls of Caithness, and is listed as the official seat of the Earldom. The castle is currently maintained by the Clan Sinclair Trust who are working to preserve it. Canon 350D 18-55 IS

Camera Exposure Compensation 101 – Guidelines and Helpful Suggestions For those new to the world of DSRL and camera that allow you to adjust the exposure here are a few guidelines to help you adjust the exposure for different subject colors: Color | Effect | Exposure No. of Stops to Change / Light colors / White (snow/sand) | 2 stops lighter than the meter | Overexpose by +2 Pink or white people, Yellow, Lime, Sky Blue, Lavender, Tan | One stop lighter than the meter | Overexpose by +1 Medium Colors / Red (Barn Red/Fire Engine Red), Royal Blue, Gold, Kelly Green, Orange Purple, Milk Chocolate | Same as the Meter setting don’t compensate. Dark colors / Maroon, Forest Green, Deep Purple, Burnt Orange, Dark Chocolate (Black People) | One stop darker than the meter | Underexpose by -1 Black | 2 stops darker than the meter | Underexpose by -2 Contrast (Dark to Light) – Spot meter between the lightest and the darkest shadow if it’s 4 stops between the lightest and darkest shadow elements in the scene then the suggestion is to wait for better light if you can but if you can’t then spot meter on the lightest portion and then Overexpose by +2 (*original source of guidelines came from: Outdoor Photography an Article by David Middleton (www.davidmiddletonphoto.com) Other Notes: / Meters on different camera can vary. if you use the guidelines above you might want to / Spot meter for Wildlife, flowers, people and animals (ignoring the background) Matrix meter (evaluative) if most of the scene is in the medium color tones like most landscapes, woods Only use center weight metering if you have an older or cheaper camera that doesn’t have all the modern metering modes. Use the settings above but best to bracket the shots by +/- .5 When bracketing a shot by +/- .5 remember that light and contrast can change the scene . If you want a good picture don’t loose your highlights. So compensate for them 1st. In digital camera, you can use the histogram feature on the camera to check contrast and highlights and the darkest areas. Then compensate according to the predominate readings on the histogram Snow: / Snow scenes try spot metering on the brightest part of the snow. At sunrise / sunset when the snow is reflecting pink light overexpose by only +1 to 1.5 stops. Just 10 to 15 minutes after sunrise when the contrast is the greatest the light turns white then compensate by overexposing by +2 stops. Backlit scenes – Sun in the picture: Try to take an overall meter reading, excluding the frame and then compensate according to the guidelines above, but bracket by +/- .5 to make sure you get a perfect exposure. This is some guidelines I found helpful when learning. I made a little chart and kept it in my camera bag incase I needed a reminder. Hope that helps all you newbies!

  • A wetlands area I frequently visit to enjoy nature, and often to capture beautiful photographic images, was the source of this image. This 25 cm. shorebird has a heroic behaviour trait that appeals to me, and I am sure it will to you too. Wikipedia says (look for the trait I am referring to): These birds forage for food in fields, mudflats, and shores, usually by sight. They mainly eat insects. Their name comes from their frequently heard call. These birds will frequently use the “broken-wing act” to distract predators from their nests. This involves the bird walking away from its nesting area holding its wing in a position that simulates an injury and then flapping around on the ground emitting a distress call. The predators then think they have easy prey and are attracted to this seemingly injured bird and away from the nest. If the parent sees that a potential predator is not following them, they will move closer and get louder until they get the attention of the predator. • The fall is here again and the cold weather is biting at the door / only the color of the leaves to brighten us up as winter approaches. This part of the Raritan River was full of dumped garbage a few years ago, but the city and volunteers took out all the old tires and garbage people had been throwing into the river. They put in these fountains and built a park along the edges, it’s now a lovely place to go sit and eat your lunch thanks to all the volunteers who helped clean it up.
